Background / History
Family and military service
Mait served with the Alliance during the Orc War and survived several major battles. His wife died during the Second War, leaving their daughter, Sally, as his only remaining loved one. Although his home was in Southshore, his duties as a First Legion physician required him to bring Sally to the army camp. He initially welcomed the influence of its friendly knights and physicians on her upbringing 31 32 34.
Warning signs at the southern camp
Mait became suspicious when soldiers began reporting headaches and mental fog. He suggested that the camp’s food or water might be responsible, but accompanying priests inspected both and found nothing unusual. His concern persisted even after fewer soldiers sought treatment. Colonel Wesley’s withdrawal from camp life—and a fleeting glimpse of her deathly pale face and darkened eyes—prompted him to warn Sally against wandering alone 31.
Connecting the symptoms with Lordaeron’s spreading plague, Mait sought help from Thassarian, a newly recruited soldier who showed no signs of the illness. Thassarian initially dismissed his fears as stress, but listened to his concern for Sally. A report of the camp’s unexplained illness also reached the Church and became a lead in Arthas and Jaina’s investigation 32.
Attempted escape
After taking precautions around his room, Mait heard intruders kill the two army priests in the adjoining quarters. When Corporal Carl approached his door with a story about a stray animal, he concealed what he had heard. Thassarian later entered through the window and reported seeing Carl and other soldiers gnawing on something amid the smell of blood. Mait supplied him with spare leather armor and a greatsword, and they planned to escape with Sally at dawn 33 34.
At the side gate, they discovered that the camp’s soldiers had become undead. Thassarian fought to protect the family, but Mal’Ganis appeared and captured Mait and Sally. Mait continued shielding his daughter even as he lost consciousness. The demon deliberately spared Thassarian so that news of the captives would draw Arthas to the camp 34.
Ritual and death
Mal’Ganis bound Mait to an altar, wounded his thigh, and used his blood to feed a ritual that consumed Sally’s life force and began transforming her soul. Arthas arrived, drove the demon away, and stopped Sally’s transformation. Mait, however, had lost too much blood, and part of his soul had already been sacrificed. Neither healing nor forcibly retaining his damaged soul could restore him 35.
Mait died after Arthas assured him that Sally was safe. He also carried guilt over the camp’s victims, believing a more insistent warning to the Church might have saved lives. Arthas placed Mait’s engraved pocket watch in Sally’s hand and later carried his remains down from the altar. Calia subsequently took responsibility for Sally, with plans for her to recuperate at the Great Monastery 35 36 37.
Personality
Mait’s concern for Sally outweighed his fear for himself. He told Thassarian that he could accept danger if he were alone, but could not forgive himself if his daughter suffered. During their capture and his final moments, protecting her remained his priority 32 34 35.
Despite his anxiety, Mait was observant and capable of acting under pressure. He trusted his medical judgment when others dismissed the camp’s symptoms, prepared safeguards around his room, and maintained enough composure to deceive Carl after hearing the priests’ deaths. He recognized his combat limitations and relied on Thassarian’s expertise rather than pretending he could lead their escape 31 32 33.
Abilities & Skills
Medicine
Mait treated soldiers as a physician in the First Legion 31.
- Identified recurring headaches and mental confusion across multiple patients 31 32.
- Proposed food or water contamination as an initial explanation and reported his concerns for investigation 31.
- Recognized that his own unease could not be explained by overwork or poor health 32.
Holy Light
Mait’s devout faith earned him the Holy Light’s protection, but his spellcasting was less developed than that of an ordinary priest 32.
- Could use the Light to assist with healing 32.
- Had little confidence in its usefulness for combat 32.
- Suspected that the Light might explain why he and Sally remained unaffected by the camp’s corruption; this was his inference, not a confirmed explanation 33.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Pocket watch — Inscribed “To my eternal love—Mait Whitemane,” signed by Mary Whitemane, with Sally’s name engraved beneath. Arthas gave it to Sally after Mait’s death 35.
- Longsword and dagger — Kept beside his bed and beneath his pillow as precautions against intruders 33.
- Spare leather armor and greatsword — Provided to Thassarian for their escape. The greatsword had previously served as decoration because it was too heavy for Mait 33.
- Improvised door alarm — A cup hung on the locked door’s handle to wake him if someone attempted entry 33.
Relationships
- Sally Whitemane — Daughter and only remaining loved one after his wife’s death. Mait protected her during their capture and died only after hearing that Arthas had saved her 31 32 34 35.
- Mary Whitemane — Wife, who died during the Second War. Her signed dedication remained engraved inside his pocket watch 31 35.
- Thassarian — Recruit whom Mait approached for help. They attempted to escape together; Thassarian later regretted dismissing his warning and remained concerned for Sally’s welfare 32 33 34 37.
- Arthas Menethil — Rescued Sally and reassured Mait in his final moments. He preserved Mait’s keepsake for her and arranged her care afterward 35 37.
- Mal’Ganis — Captor and killer. Used Mait and Sally as bait for Arthas, then sacrificed Mait’s blood and part of his soul in a dark ritual 34 35.
