Background / History

Recruitment

Thassarian was a farm boy before entering military service. His outstanding training performance earned him special recruitment into the First Legion. When Doctor Mait approached him about strange illnesses at the southern camp, he had been there only a few days and hoped to distinguish himself fighting the orcs 31 38.

South Camp Massacre

Thassarian initially dismissed Mait’s concerns about soldiers suffering headaches and confusion, trusting Commander Wesley and the prince’s response to the plague. Nevertheless, he listened when Mait insisted something was wrong and acknowledged that soldiers also had a duty to protect Lordaeron’s people 32.

That night, Thassarian smelled blood and witnessed Corporal Carl and other soldiers gnawing on something. He avoided the patrols and entered Mait’s quarters through a window. After establishing his identity through a shared memory, he helped plan an escape with Mait and his daughter, Sally, during the dawn patrol change 33 34.

The escape failed when undead soldiers attacked near the side gate. Thassarian fought to protect Mait and Sally, but an undead soldier he had cut in half seized his ankle, allowing the others to overwhelm him. Mal’Ganis captured the family and deliberately left Thassarian alive, badly wounded, several kilometers from camp 34.

Arthas’s party found and revived him. His testimony exposed the camp’s destruction and the captives’ disappearance; Arthas recognized that Mal’Ganis had spared him to deliver a lure. Thassarian blamed himself for not believing Mait sooner 34.

After Arthas drove Mal’Ganis away, Sally survived, but Mait and the other camp victims were dead. Thassarian was the only surviving soldier. Arthas appointed him commander of the reconstituted Thirteenth Battalion, and he swore to follow the prince 35 36.

Northrend Expedition

Holy Light and potions healed Thassarian’s wounds before departure. He asked Arthas about Sally’s welfare and learned that Calia was caring for her. Eager to avenge his comrades, he promised to bring back Mal’Ganis’s head, but Arthas warned him that the demon was beyond his current strength 37.

In Northrend, Thassarian reported undead activity and served as a dependable subordinate. When Brann returned without Arthas and relayed the prince’s withdrawal order, Thassarian initially obeyed. He later left his major’s insignia in his tent and rode out alone to search for Arthas 38 43.

Nightmares of the Thirteenth Battalion’s massacre drove his search. He knew that leaving the army was reckless, but felt unable to abandon his rescuer or accept the retreat without seeing Mal’Ganis defeated 45.

At the ruined Necropolis, Thassarian encountered Detheroc, fired at him, and escaped. Mistaking the dreadlord for Mal’Ganis, he feared Arthas was in danger. Rather than continue alone, he decided to return to Howling Fjord and alert Brann and the First Legion 48.

Military Career

Rank / Position Chapter Notes
First Legion recruit 31 Specially recruited for outstanding training performance.
Commander of the reconstituted Thirteenth Battalion; major 36 37 Appointed by Arthas after the massacre; subsequently addressed as “Major” and ordered to oversee embarkation.
Abandoned command 43 Left his rank insignia behind to search for Arthas against withdrawal orders; no formal disciplinary outcome is documented.

Personality

Thassarian is protective and courageous, returning for Mait and Sally after discovering the camp’s corruption rather than escaping alone. His early confidence in military authority gives way to guilt when Mait’s warnings prove correct 32 33 34.

His loyalty to Arthas is deeply personal: the prince saved his life, and withdrawing while Arthas faced the enemy alone felt intolerable. That devotion also makes him impulsive. He recognizes his own recklessness, and his later decision to bring back intelligence instead of continuing alone marks a more practical expression of duty 43 45 48.

Abilities & Skills

Swordsmanship

  • Earned special recruitment through exceptional training performance 31.
  • Drove back several undead soldiers with swift sword strikes during the attempted escape 34.
  • Could not overcome dozens of attackers; Arthas explicitly judged him unready to fight Mal’Ganis 34 37.

Observation and Fieldcraft

  • Detected blood and suspicious activity, avoided patrols, and reached Mait’s window unnoticed 33.
  • Chose the dawn patrol change as the best escape opportunity 34.
  • Made camp alone in Northrend, gathered firewood, and postponed investigating unknown lights until daylight 45.

Firearm Use

  • Fired at Detheroc during their brief encounter; no injury to the dreadlord is documented 48.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Spare leather armor and greatsword — offered by Mait for the escape from South Camp 33.
  • Major’s rank insignia — abandoned in his tent before leaving the expedition 43.
  • Warhorse — carried him through Northrend; sensed danger at the Necropolis ruins 45 48.
  • Thick cloak, pauldrons, and flint — used during his solitary journey across the ice fields 45.
  • Firearm — used against Detheroc 48.

Relationships

  • Arthas Menethil — rescuer and commander. Thassarian pledges loyalty to him and later risks his military position to search for him 34 36 43.
  • Doctor Mait — trusted older acquaintance, addressed as “Uncle Mait.” Thassarian initially doubts his warning, then attempts to save him and regrets failing to act sooner 32 33 34.
  • Sally Whitemane — Mait’s daughter, whom he tries to protect; he continues asking after her safety following the massacre 34 37.
  • Kirlorn — father, also killed in the West Weald massacre 43.
  • Brann Bronzebeard — expedition companion whose withdrawal instructions conflict with Thassarian’s determination to follow Arthas. Brann considers him brave but dangerously rash 43.
  • Mal’Ganis — enemy responsible for the battalion’s destruction and the focus of Thassarian’s desire for vengeance 34 45.
  • Detheroc — dreadlord encountered at the ruined Necropolis and mistaken for Mal’Ganis 48.
