Background / History
Enrollment and First Defeat
Gojo enters Jujutsu High at fifteen alongside Suguru Geto, Tsukasa Hatayama, and Shoko Ieiri. His boastful classroom introduction immediately provokes Geto and Tsukasa. Their cursed-energy confrontation breaks the windows, and the other students blame Gojo when Masamichi Yaga arrives. Despite the hostile first meeting, Gojo soon spends the night talking with Geto and Tsukasa in Tsukasa’s room, establishing their close friendship 2 3 4.
After Gojo and Geto mock Utahime Iori, Yaga arranges sparring matches against Tsukasa to teach them humility. Gojo withstands Cursed Pressure and a sustained weapon barrage with Limitless, but Tsukasa cuts through both Blue and his spatial defense before knocking him unconscious. Shoko treats his injured jaw 5 6 7.
News of the defeat spreads throughout Jujutsu Society and embarrasses the Gojo Clan, intensifying its friction with Jujutsu High. Gojo responds by seeking instruction from Tsukasa rather than abandoning his ambition: he learns Cursed Pressure and pursues finer cursed-energy control in hopes of mastering Reverse Cursed Technique 8 9 12.
Birthday and Second-Year Life
At his December 7 birthday banquet, Gojo dresses himself, Geto, and Tsukasa in suits for a Matrix-themed entrance. When the guests direct covetous attention toward Tsukasa, the three release Cursed Pressure together and force the gathering to its knees. During the later family celebration, Gojo wishes to master Reverse Cursed Technique, surpass Tsukasa, and reform Jujutsu Society 25 26.
As a second-year, he welcomes Yu Haibara and Kento Nanami by announcing himself as the school’s second-strongest. Haibara’s admiration for Geto makes him jealous, and he pressures Nanami into naming him as an idol. His confidence nevertheless conceals frustration over his continued inability to understand Reverse Cursed Technique 27 28.
Star Plasma Vessel Mission
On July 10, 2006, Gojo joins his classmates in rescuing Mei Mei and Utahime from a ruined house near Arakawa. Rather than investigate the building’s barrier carefully, he tears the structure apart with Blue. Yaga subsequently warns the team about unnecessary property damage and assigns Gojo and Geto to protect Riko Amanai until her assimilation with Tengen 34 35.
The pair defeat the Q Organization, escort Riko, and travel to Okinawa to rescue her attendant, Kuroi. Tsukasa’s warnings and Mind’s Eye training help them stay alert when they return to Jujutsu High, allowing Gojo to intercept Toji Fushiguro’s initial ambush 36 37 38.
Gojo and Geto fight together, but Toji’s speed, concealed arsenal, and technique-nullifying Inverted Spear of Heaven overcome their coordination. After Toji tears off Geto’s arm, Gojo loses his composure. A feint toward Riko and Kuroi draws his attention away from his defenses, allowing Toji to inflict near-fatal wounds 38 39.
Gojo survives by mastering Reverse Cursed Technique during the attack. After Tsukasa intervenes and leaves the two to settle their confrontation, Gojo defeats Toji. Before dying, Toji tells him that his son will be sold to the Zenin Clan in a few years. Gojo later thanks Tsukasa upon learning that Riko survived, and he and Geto keep her survival secret to protect her 40 42 45.
Post-Mission Development
Gojo intends to destroy the Inverted Spear of Heaven because it directly counters Limitless. Instead, he lends it to Tsukasa for research and receives a Flowing Water Rock Smashing Fist manual in return. Tsukasa extracts the spear’s nullification property and demonstrates it on Gojo’s defense with a Black Rod 45 46.
By August 10, 2007, Gojo has automated Limitless and made its continuous use sustainable through self-repairing Reverse Cursed Technique. His next goals include a domain and long-distance instantaneous movement using Blue. Tsukasa’s potential for two domains renews his envy, but Gojo remains determined to develop his own 48 49 50.
Appearance
Gojo is a tall, lean, white-haired boy with delicate, boyish features and striking blue eyes 3 25 49.
- Eyes: Azure or sky-blue Six Eyes, usually concealed behind sunglasses 3 6.
- Height: Geto estimates him at approximately 1.9 metres during their first year 7.
- Signature accessory: Flashy black sunglasses, which he wears even at night 3 4.
- Birthday attire: A fitted suit for his Matrix-themed banquet, contrasting with the guests’ kimonos 25.
Personality
Gojo is outspoken, theatrical, and intensely proud of his abilities. He initially treats weaker sorcerers as unworthy of respect, openly insults his seniors, and shows little restraint when criticizing the higher-ups. His recklessness extends to mission procedure: forgetting to lower a Curtain exposes an exorcism and contributes to a gas-pipeline explosion that damages a shrine 4 5 10 24.
His competitive pride does not prevent him from learning from stronger people. Losing to Tsukasa motivates sustained training, and he readily teaches Geto once he understands Cursed Pressure himself. Although Tsukasa’s advances provoke envy and dramatic sulking, Gojo explicitly supports his friend’s research and sincerely celebrates his growing strength 8 9 23 46.
Gojo’s attachments also reveal a softer side. He is possessive of his friendships, affectionate and obedient toward his mother, and easily reassured by Geto and Tsukasa after feeling excluded. In battle, concern for his companions can override his judgment: Geto’s injury and the apparent threat to Riko leave him vulnerable to Toji’s deception 10 13 26 39.
Abilities & Skills
Six Eyes
The Six Eyes provide exceptional perception of cursed techniques and combat detail 3 5 22.
- Identifies others’ innate techniques, including Utahime’s support technique 5 6.
- Recognizes Tsukasa’s Dark Manipulation as unusually dark and unfamiliar, without exposing all his hidden abilities 3 6.
- Perceives the intricacy of Tsukasa’s swordsmanship, though Kuzuryūsen is fast enough that he catches only an afterimage 22.
- Does not prevent mistakes caused by emotional distraction; Toji exploits his concern for Riko to disguise a feint 39.
Limitless and Inviolability
Limitless controls space and creates a defense that stops approaching attacks before they reach Gojo 6.
- Blocks Cursed Pressure, a massed weapon barrage, and Toji’s sword strikes 6 39.
- Early prolonged use causes heavy mental strain, particularly when Gojo attacks and defends simultaneously 6.
- Later automatically evaluates threats through cursed-energy strength, mass, speed, and shape 48.
- Constant Reverse Cursed Technique keeps his brain fresh and allows continuous operation; poison detection remains unresolved 48.
- Can be breached by Tsukasa’s Mystic Eyes of Death Perception and forcibly nullified by the Inverted Spear of Heaven or Tsukasa’s derived Black Rod 6 39 46.
Cursed Technique Lapse: Blue
Blue supplies attraction and spatial manipulation for movement, battlefield control, and attacks 5 6 38.
- Collects scattered weapons into a large sphere and directs it against Tsukasa’s attacks 6.
- Rips apart the barrier-covered house during the Arakawa rescue 34.
- Redirects broken blade fragments toward Toji and helps clear the forest battlefield 38.
- Long-distance instantaneous movement using Blue remains a development goal in August 2007 48.
Reverse Cursed Technique and Red
Gojo learns self-healing by concentrating on Reverse Cursed Technique while Toji’s attack leaves him near death 40.
- Restores himself sufficiently to resume fighting after repeated stabbing 39 40.
- Continuously repairs his brain to offset the burden of maintaining Limitless 48.
- Enables the later development of Cursed Technique Reversal: Red; he is gradually learning to activate multiple Reds and Blues together 48.
- Healing other people is not demonstrated in the provided chapters.
Cursed Pressure
Learned from Tsukasa, Cursed Pressure compresses cursed energy before releasing it as an offensive surge 8.
- Quickly produces a surge powerful enough to knock nearby bees unconscious 8.
- Patiently explains the method to Geto and helps him learn it 8 9.
- Joins Geto and Tsukasa in using it against the guests at his birthday banquet 26.
- Requires substantial cursed-energy reserves 6.
Rasengan
Gojo becomes particularly adept at Rasengan through training with Tsukasa’s shared techniques 23.
- Uses a powerful sphere attack against Toji; its explosion blasts both fighters away 38.
- Helps Geto and Tsukasa throw Tsukasa’s newly developed Rasenshuriken, but does not independently demonstrate creating one 23.
Close Combat, Black Flash, and Mind’s Eye
Gojo combines aggressive hand-to-hand attacks with cursed-energy reinforcement and defensive awareness 6 22 38.
- Lands a Black Flash that destroys Tsukasa’s dark-matter barrier 6.
- Initially favors fierce offense, allowing Geto’s measured counters to disrupt his rhythm during sparring 22.
- Uses Mind’s Eye training to react to physically powerful opponents without relying on their cursed-energy signature 38.
- Coordinates ranged feints and close-range attacks with Geto against Toji 38.
Domain Development
Gojo is developing a domain, but its completed use and name are not documented in the provided chapters 48 50.
- Describes its intended direction as a guaranteed-hit, guaranteed-kill effect 50.
- Believes it may rival Tsukasa’s Blissful Asura’s Slumber, though no comparison through combat occurs 50.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Black sunglasses — His habitual accessory; he removes them when examining something closely or preparing for serious combat 3 6 22.
- Inverted Spear of Heaven — Recovered after Toji’s defeat. Gojo plans to destroy it because its technique nullification threatens Limitless, then gives it to Tsukasa for experiments 45 46.
- Chain of a Thousand Miles — Exchanges it with Geto rather than surrendering the Inverted Spear of Heaven 45.
- Soul Liberation Blade — Receives it from Geto in the cursed-tool exchange and lets Haibara and Nanami examine it 45.
- Flowing Water Rock Smashing Fist notebook — Tsukasa’s return gift for the spear. Describes flowing strikes, attack deflection, and unpredictable instant-movement footwork; Gojo’s mastery is not shown 46 47.
Relationships
- Tsukasa Hatayama — Best friend, instructor, and principal rival. Gojo wants to surpass him but supports him unconditionally, even when his advances inspire jealousy 8 23 46.
- Suguru Geto — Best friend and combat partner. Their early hostility becomes affectionate teasing, mutual instruction, and coordinated fighting; Geto’s severe injury causes Gojo to lose composure against Toji 3 9 38 39.
- Shoko Ieiri — Classmate and healer. Treats his injuries, participates in their teasing, and helps test his automated Limitless 7 9 48.
- Masamichi Yaga — Teacher and later principal. Regularly disciplines Gojo for insolence, disrupted classes, and careless mission conduct 3 10 24 47.
- Utahime Iori — Senior and frequent target of mockery. Their encounters repeatedly become heated arguments, even after he helps rescue her 4 13 34 35.
- Yuto Gojo — Father and Gojo Clan head. Gojo addresses him irreverently; Yuto accepts his defeat and appreciates Tsukasa’s instruction 26.
- Sumi Gojo — Mother. Her gentle reprimands bring out an unusually bashful, affectionate, and obedient side of him 26.
- Riko Amanai and Kuroi — Protected charges during the Star Plasma Vessel mission. He reacts urgently to danger aimed at them and later helps conceal Riko’s survival 35 39 45.
- Toji Fushiguro — Opponent who nearly kills him and inadvertently triggers his Reverse Cursed Technique breakthrough. Gojo defeats him and hears his final disclosure about his son 39 40 42.
- Yu Haibara and Kento Nanami — Juniors. Gojo competes for their admiration; Nanami initially considers him unreliable and only names him as an idol under pressure 27 28.
