Power Ranks

Demon Beasts are classified by cultivation rank and, where specified, star level. Documented ranks range from Bronze to Legend 4 76.

• Rank is not the only measure of danger: five comparatively low-ranked Silverstripe Wolves consume nearly one-fifth of Silver 3-Star Shen Fei’s Soul Force; he judges that seven or eight would force him to retreat 11.
• Armor varies by species: an Ironclad Beast is substantially harder to injure than other beasts at its rank 17.
• Higher rank does not guarantee victory: traps, inscription arrays, coordinated attacks, and exposed weak points allow cultivators to defeat stronger beasts 17 29 148.

Habitat and Behavior

Dark Forest

• The Dark Forest lies north of Glory City, approximately two days away on foot 11.
• City Guard records place Bronze beasts in the outskirts and Silver beasts mainly in the central region. On his first expedition, Shen Fei instead encounters Silver beasts almost hourly near the forest’s edge 11.
• During a later expedition, most outer-region beasts range from Bronze to Silver, with occasional solitary Gold beasts wandering out from deeper areas 135.
• Beast density and rank rise sharply toward the depths, where incomplete records and unexplored terrain make travel more dangerous 135 136.

Hunting and Pack Organization

• Coordinated pursuit: Silverstripe Wolves work together and attempt to surround their prey; Gray-Furred Wolves also attack from both flanks 11 136.
• Ambush positions: beasts wait at valley mouths, where a single blocked exit can trap travelers 17.
• Mixed-species packs: a Gold 3-Star leader commands thirty or forty Bronze and Silver beasts, including wolves, pigs, leopards, and Fanged Beasts 136.
• Roar-based commands: leaders use growls and roars to direct charges. An intelligent Black Gold giant bear recalls fleeing survivors and reforms them into a defensive formation 83 136.

Physical Strength and Armor

• Horns, claws, teeth, heavy scales, and bone spikes serve as natural weapons or protection 3 17 136 164.
• A Black Gold beast’s forepaw strike smashes a shallow crater into the ground 148.
• Several Black Gold beasts striking together shatter a section of Glory City’s wall 87.
• Armor is not uniform: eyes, noses, limb joints, gaps between scales, and old wounds provide attack openings 11 17 148 165.

Elemental and Specialized Attacks

• Fire: Blazing Demon Lions radiate heat. An unnamed peak Black Gold 5-Star beast launches fireballs and uses its flames to cauterize a shallow wound 16 164.
• Corrosive mist: an Abyssal Troll exhales black mist that visibly weakens the Grand Unity Array’s barrier 29.
• Regeneration: the Netherlight Behemoth replaces severed tentacles faster than Shen Fei and Nie Li can cut them down 40.
• Oppressive aura: high-ranked beasts exert pressure that can impair opponents; a Black Gold beast’s roar makes Xiao Ning’er sway in midair 146 148.

Senses and Countermeasures

• Demon Beasts’ sense of smell can be countered with powders that conceal human scent or irritate their noses 10.
• Tripwires, concealed traps, anesthetic, and blade-coated poison are effective against suitable targets 10 11.
• Heavy armor can resist direct lightning strikes, but attacks through the mouth or an existing wound bypass external protection 85 86 164.
• Pack momentum can become a liability: rear ranks push those ahead into burning trenches, while surviving beasts advance over their own dead 81.

Demon Crystals and Materials

• Demon Crystals: extracted from slain beasts and traded in Glory City. The peak-Silver Ironclad Rhino’s crystal is worth ten ordinary Silver crystals 6 11.
• Armor materials: Shen Fei salvages the Gold 1-Star Ironclad Beast’s scales for future armor 17.
• Decorative use: Shen Fei’s belt buckle is polished from a Silver beast’s Demon Crystal 6.
• Durable hide: the Dark Prison Reincarnation Art is recorded on an unidentified Demon Beast’s hide that has survived centuries without decay 13.
• Beast bones: appear among auction goods alongside weapons, inscriptions, and elixirs 133.

Demon Spirits

• Demon Spirits are distinct from the living beasts. Ye Zong extracts the Beast King’s spirit after killing it, while stored spirits retain beast-shaped outlines inside sealed containers 88 103.
• Fusion joins a spirit with its host’s soul; failure to withstand the process can leave the host mentally controlled by the spirit 13.
• Spirits can provide specialized abilities. Shen Fei’s Black Gold Shadow Mantis grants stealth, cutting attacks, and short-range teleportation 13.
• The Dark Prison Reincarnation Art can consume spirits for cultivation, but their surviving imprints may reform and attack within the practitioner’s Soul Sea 95.
• Attribute, purity, preservation, and rank affect refinement. Shen Fei selects a pure dark-attribute Black Gold 3-Star Shadow Wolf King while rejecting incompatible fire and inefficient cold-yin spirits 103.
• Consuming the Wolf King destroys its remaining will and converts its power into darkness energy, strengthening Shen Fei and the Shadow Mantis 104 105.

Story Role / Major Arcs

Glory City’s Fall

In Shen Fei’s previous life, the beasts attack without warning and tear three breaches through the outer defenses within half an hour. A horned Gold beast pierces his chest, while a Legend beast destroys the beacon tower. His retained knowledge of their routes and attack sequences becomes part of his effort to prevent the disaster from recurring 3 4.

Wilderness Training and the Gulan Expedition

Shen Fei’s first Dark Forest expedition pits him against coordinated wolves and heavily armored opponents. Killing a stronger Ironclad Rhino begins loosening his cultivation bottleneck. Later, an unusual beast ambush scatters the Gulan expedition, and his rescue of Xiao Ning’er leads to their joint battle against an Ironclad Beast 11 16 17.

The Million-Strong Beast Tide

• Scouts confirm that the Dark Guild is herding approximately one million beasts toward Glory City with beast-driving powder. The vanguard contains roughly five or six hundred thousand Bronze and Silver beasts, followed by about a dozen Black Gold beasts; Legend beasts are considered unlikely 76.
• Nie Li prepares trenches, spikes, oil, corrosive potion, explosives, and inscription defenses rather than sending ordinary warriors into direct combat 80 81.
• Organized flanking beasts threaten vulnerable defenses, while later massed Black Gold attacks force breaches in the walls 82 87.
• Ye Zong kills the Beast King after hours of fighting, breaking the horde’s cohesion and ending the assault 88.
• The reported aftermath is 20,000 dead, 1,000 seriously wounded, and 3,000 lightly wounded, fewer casualties than expected 89.

Later Forest Battles

Beast hunting becomes a practical training ground for Xiao Ning’er’s Thunder Spear techniques. During the Jade Grove Clan arc, she and Shen Fei kill a Black Gold 3-Star attacker by exploiting an old leg injury. While escorting the clan toward Glory City, they intercept a peak Black Gold 5-Star fire beast away from the villagers and attack its vulnerable joints, organs, and spine 137 148 163 164 165.
