At seventeen, he was required to undertake Upper Scene Heaven's traditional trial journey for True Disciples. Wei Long arranged for Zhang Yuan to serve as his Guardian of the Dao, instructing Mo Huaian to follow Zhang Yuan's lead throughout the journey. 460

His travels exposed him to deception, violence, poverty, and the consequences of careless good intentions. After finding Xiao Huan's rare Grade A Middle Bone Structure, Mo Huaian attempted to recruit her for the Dao lineage, only for her family to misunderstand and exploit the situation. In Yongzhou, he became alarmed by signs that a Drought Demon might be responsible for the region's catastrophic drought.
