Cheng Shun sat in the passenger seat of the black SUV, grimacing from the pain of his wounds.
Even so, his eyes remained wide open, fixed on the road ahead, afraid of missing anything.
About a kilometer ahead, a convoy was parked beneath the trees on the right side of the road.
His gaze passed over the ordinary cars and buses at the rear and locked onto the RV at the very front.
That was it!
Cheng Shun nudged the burly man in a suit driving beside him, his voice brimming with excitement.
"Found them! Found them! That's the one!"
The bald driver frowned at his shouting, but before he could scold him, Cheng Shun had already grabbed the radio beside his seat and pressed the transmit button with trembling fingers.
"Mr. Yang! Mr. Yang, you see them, right? That's them! We found them!"
His voice traveled over the airwaves into the cabin of the Rolls-Royce ahead.
Yang Feng sat in the passenger seat, leaning forward slightly.
His eyes were much sharper than Cheng Shun's.
Before Cheng Shun had managed to get a clear look, he had already surveyed the entire convoy ahead.
A dozen or so vehicles-not a large convoy-all sat quietly beside the road.
The RV at the front matched Cheng Shun's description exactly.
"I see it."
Yang Feng replied over the radio, the corners of his mouth slowly curling upward.
In his bloodshot eyes, days of exhaustion and agitation gave way to a surge of excitement.
But he did not give the order right away.
Back in Qianxing Village, he had seen hope just like this, then plunged straight in and lost more than a dozen lives.
So he pressed the transmit button again, keeping his voice low. "Cheng Shun, are you sure that's the one?"
"I'm sure! One hundred percent! Mr. Yang, I'd recognize that RV even if it were burned to ashes!"
Cheng Shun was practically shouting, spittle spraying onto the window, so excited he forgot he was still wounded.
Even back when Zhao Biao was alive, he had dreamed of riding in that RV.
Yang Feng considered it briefly, then picked up another radio and switched to the convoy-wide channel.
"Everyone, listen up."
"The target is up ahead. Heavy vehicles, flank them on both sides and cut off their escape. Everyone else, follow and surround them."
"If any of you screw up and let even one vehicle escape, I'll kill you!"
Brief acknowledgments soon came back from the vehicles over the channel.
When the roar of engines rolled toward them from the distance, most people in the Dawn Convoy were still asleep.
Their relentless flight had pushed everyone's minds and bodies to the limit.
Even with the sun baking the interiors of their vehicles like steamers, no one wanted to move.
But the engines were getting closer.
Not just one or two.
Dozens of engines roared together, deep and dense.
The first to react were the few people keeping watch on the convoy's perimeter.
They rose from their seats, rubbed their sleepy eyes, and looked out through the windows.
Then they saw it: a dark mass of vehicles approaching at tremendous speed from the far end of the road.
They were coming in hard.
The black Rolls-Royce and mud-caked SUV driving side by side at the front suddenly split to either side when they were less than two hundred meters from the Dawn Convoy.
Behind them, several large modified vehicles that had originally been bringing up the rear abruptly accelerated.
These heavy vehicles charged almost brutally past the Dawn Convoy's parking spot, then swung sharply across the road, sealing it off.
Their tires scorched black streaks into the asphalt, and the stench of burning rubber mingled with exhaust fumes in the air.
Now everyone in the Dawn Convoy was wide awake.
Some pushed their doors open and jumped out, only to freeze in shock at the line of heavy vehicles blocking the road before they could even understand what was happening.
"Wh-what's going on?"
"Why are there so many vehicles? Who are these people?"
"Fuck, are we getting robbed?"
But those who had once belonged to Zhao Biao's convoy were all too familiar with this formation.
They knew it far too well.
This was exactly how Zhao Biao used to block the road and rob people.
They had simply never dreamed that one day they would be the ones getting robbed.
The quicker ones ducked back into their vehicles without a word, slammed the doors shut, and fumbled for the central locking buttons.
Inside the RV.
Shen Ye had lowered the curtains as soon as the engines approached.
Instead of hurrying outside, he glanced through a gap in the curtains.
Another encirclement.
Every escape route had been blocked.
This newly arrived convoy had at least twice as many vehicles as theirs.
His frown deepened.
Bang, bang, bang.
Someone was knocking on his door.
Shen Ye lifted a corner of the curtain.
He Yunping stood outside.
The usually smiling man wore a rare look of gravity.
Fine beads of sweat covered his forehead, and he kept glancing toward the road out of the corner of his eye.
Shen Ye assumed he was seeking protection, so he did not open the door immediately.
"Captain Shen." He Yunping lowered his voice, speaking much faster than usual. "Let me in. I have information to report."
Only then did Shen Ye open the door and let him in.
Once He Yunping was inside, a corner of the curtain was drawn back, giving them a clear view of the Rolls-Royce.
Before he could speak, the black Rolls-Royce's door opened.
The first thing to emerge was a foot in a pointed white leather shoe.
Then came a patterned silk shirt, white suit trousers, and a beige cowboy hat.
The brim sat neither too high nor too low, revealing exactly half his face.
When the man in white trousers removed his sunglasses, He Yunping finally got a clear look at his face.
"Yang Feng..."
"It really is him."
His voice changed as he uttered the name.
Shen Ye followed his gaze.
After coming to a stop, the man in the patterned shirt first adjusted his cuffs with casual indifference.
Then a woman stepped out of the rear of the Rolls-Royce.
She wore a violet spaghetti-strap bodycon dress, with long, wavy brown hair spilling over her shoulders.
The hem barely covered the tops of her thighs, and she wore slender high heels.
She walked gracefully around the front of the car and slipped her arm naturally through Yang Feng's.
Immediately afterward, the rear door of a black SUV was yanked open.
A burly bald man dragged someone out.
The man's head was mostly bald, his body covered in blood and grime, and he hung limp as a heap of mud.
Grabbing him by the back of his collar, the bald man dragged him like a dead dog to a spot several meters behind Yang Feng, then let go.
The man lay sprawled on the ground, breathing hard, without even the strength to lift his head.
He Yunping followed Shen Ye's gaze, and his eyes widened abruptly when he recognized the man's face.
"Cheng Shun..."
He spat the name through gritted teeth.
Seeing his reaction, Shen Ye asked in puzzlement, "Do you have a grudge against him?"
"No. He used to manage Zhao Biao's convoy. After Zhao Biao died, he ran off with some of the others. He's probably the one who brought these people here..."
Understanding dawned on Shen Ye's face. Then he pointed at Yang Feng. "What about him? What do you know?"
He Yunping drew a breath and lowered his voice until only Shen Ye could hear him.
"His name is Yang Feng. Before the apocalypse, his family was one of Hong Kong's leading wealthy families. He also ran an investment company and several casinos himself. On the side, he was involved in lending and debt collection. He had connections on both sides of the law."
"Two days before Zhao Biao died, we encountered the Blood Eagle Convoy he'd put together and made a trade."
"A trade?" Shen Ye immediately picked up on the key detail. "He's a Sequence Awakened?"
"Not just him. There are two other Sequence Awakened in his convoy, but I don't know who they are or what abilities they have."
Just as he finished speaking, Yang Feng took a step forward.
He raised a hand and pushed up the brim of his cowboy hat, revealing eyes as sharp as a hawk's.
Facing the RV, he smiled faintly.
"My friend in the RV..."
"I've been waiting so long. Aren't you coming down for a chat?"
Inside the RV, Shen Ye did not answer immediately.
First, Shen Ye gripped Ghost Head's hilt and immediately activated its Intangible effect.
The blade trembled slightly, then the entire weapon vanished into the air as though shrouded in mist.
He was clearly holding a blade.
But anyone looking at him would see only his empty right hand.
When the door opened, a wave of heat washed over him.
A tall, lean young man in his early twenties, with cold, stern features, stood on the step in the doorway and looked down at the man in the cowboy hat ahead.
