Life at the Convoy’s Rear

Old Yang begins as the convoy’s only mechanic, repairing vehicles in exchange for supplies. Despite providing an essential service, he travels by bicycle and remains among the marginal survivors at the convoy’s rear. Before his first on-page interaction with Chen Mo, he gives the young man water after finding him collapsed beside the road 1.

When Brother Dao knocks Chen Mo off his bicycle, Old Yang helps him stand and secretly shares a small, moldy biscuit. He later survives the flight from Sunward Village and catches up with the convoy. Chen Mo repays the food with roasted potatoes, and Old Yang accepts that the debt is settled without ending their friendship 1 6 7.

Awakening and Recognition

During the overnight crossing of Horseshoe Gully, Old Yang warns Chen Mo that a third-tier Spectral Bear may be pursuing them. His modified bicycle lets him keep pace far longer than the other cyclists, but he eventually reaches his physical limit and holds onto Chen Mo’s truck. Both recognize that they have become the convoy’s new sacrificial “tail” 8.

When Lin Lu’s Command Vehicle breaks down, Old Yang repairs it in under ten minutes. Lin Lu subsequently admits him into the vehicle and gives him gasoline. Old Yang’s Mechanic awakening gains him a place among the merged convoy’s decision-makers. He shares information unavailable to independent travelers, including the danger of Apricot Blossom Town and the expected scarcity farther north. Before Chen Mo enters Wugui Village, he lends him an experimental weapon-enchantment device in exchange for testing feedback, its return, and forty percent of the recovered supplies 9 10.

After Chen Mo returns, Old Yang prevents A Ye from collecting Brother Dao’s protection fee by declaring Chen Mo under his protection. He later mediates the dispute over the Hairy Savage’s claw and carries out the truck modification offered as compensation for surrendering it 17 20.

Later Convoy Operations

Old Yang warmly welcomes Chen Mo back from Apricot Blossom Town, notices his awakening, and escorts him to the convoy’s leaders. He subsequently transforms Chen Mo’s truck into an anomalous vehicle using a damaged Mechanical Core and Li Xia’s remaining vengeful soul. In Prosper City, he also equips the convoy’s bus with a snowplow 31 33 39.

During the shopping-center crisis, Old Yang and Xiao Liu reach the upper floor covered in snow and out of breath. After Xiao Ya returns, Old Yang helps load the critically injured Big Niu into the Command Vehicle. Distressed by the decision to leave Chen Mo and Red Hare behind, he nevertheless obeys Lin Lu’s evacuation order and escapes with the convoy 43 44.

Personality

Old Yang combines compassion with strict boundaries around obligation. He shares food and water while barely surviving himself, but later carefully distinguishes friendship from unpaid debts. His recurring assurance—“We’re still friends”—accompanies both accepting repayment and paying Chen Mo for help 1 7 8.

His practical outlook does not erase his concern for others. He accepts that stopping for stranded survivors could kill both himself and Chen Mo, yet openly protects Chen Mo from extortion. When Chen Mo returns missing two fingers, his first response is to ask whether Su Qian can reattach them 8 17 31.
