Power Progression

Stage / Realm / Level Chapter Notes
Level Two / Second-Tier Variant 18 35 Already level two when introduced. Old Zhang later confirms that his energy has stabilized at this tier. No completed advancement to level three is documented.

Appearance

  • Black-and-white coat: His ordinary-animal disguise resembles a somewhat scrawny donkey; Su Qian nevertheless considers him sturdy enough to carry supplies 19 20.
  • Pink boxer shorts and gold chain: Wears conspicuous accessories while speaking privately with Chen Mo, but makes them disappear when adopting his harmless disguise 18 19.
  • Large front teeth and expressive face: Frequently bares his teeth, rolls his eyes, and displays recognizably human emotions 20 22 32.
  • Oversized sunglasses: Wears them when driving the dump truck into Hualian Supermarket 28.
  • Soft, fluffy fur: Enjoys being stroked by Su Qian, while Xiao Ya describes him as fluffy and fun to ride 37 39.

Personality

Red Hare is boastful, vulgar, and intensely protective of his self-image. He insists that he is a legendary horse rather than a donkey and angrily rejects being called a pet or treated like livestock. His pride rarely withstands an appealing meal: after inwardly protesting being fed from a battered basin, he eagerly eats its pork and glass noodles 20 28 32.

His greed extends to food, supernatural remains, and stolen goods. He admires Chen Mo’s ruthlessness, helps fabricate compensation claims against anomalies, and attempts to conceal part of their haul from Old Zhang. He is also a skilled performer, able to imitate a docile animal, feign grief, and exploit another person’s affection 16 29 35 36 37.

Although initially calculating and reluctant to endanger himself for Chen Mo, Red Hare develops genuine loyalty toward him. His early rescue requires bargaining and the reminder of a promise; later, he voluntarily draws a level-four pursuer away and leaves Chen Mo protection against possession 25 45 47.

Substitute Tokens

Red Hare supplies protective black-clay tokens capable of taking a fatal attack in the holder’s place 22 25.

Background / History

Encounter and Alliance

Red Hare first appears as a black-and-white blur that steals the defeated Hairy Savage’s corpse. After eating it, he expresses interest in Chen Mo’s greed and ruthlessness. He later appears in Chen Mo’s passenger seat, introduces himself, and offers a route to becoming a Transcendent 16 18.

His immediate goal is refuge from the Spectral Bear. Chen Mo bargains rather than submitting to his threats, securing limits on Red Hare’s conduct and a promise of assistance. When Big Niu approaches, Red Hare adopts an ordinary donkey’s appearance and instructs Chen Mo to call him a fine steed 19.

Apricot Blossom Town

Red Hare directs Chen Mo into the clinic to discover Doctor Wen’s killing rules. After a costly rescue, the pair return and stage a destructive medical dispute, undermining Wen’s authority and supernatural domain. Red Hare defeats him and guides Chen Mo’s successful awakening 22 25 26 27.

At Hualian Supermarket, Red Hare helps disable Li Xia and loots the shelves with Chen Mo and Hu Yaya. A fabricated compensation demand escalates into combat with the Store Manager, but the Spectral Bear’s arrival forces them to flee. Hu Yaya diverts the bear, allowing Chen Mo and Red Hare to reach the Starfire Convoy 28 29 30 31.

The Merchant Scheme

Chen Mo presents Red Hare as his contracted beast under a fabricated Beast Tamer identity. The pair later exploit this cover to trade Red Hare to Old Zhang for a Lion-Headed Vengeful Soul and a First-Tier Energy Core 31 35 37.

Red Hare feigns attachment to the merchant, steals his belongings, and escapes using a sludge substitute. After returning, he attempts to hide some of the spoils from Chen Mo before surrendering additional goods and the cultivation booklet 36 37 38.

Prosper City and Separation

In Prosper City’s shopping center, Red Hare and Chen Mo remain behind after the evacuation to finish the weakened Six-Armed Weird. Their attempt to secure valuable remains coincides with the emergence of a level-four Frost Cicada 43 45.

When Chen Mo is struck by cold poison, Red Hare brings him to Li Xia’s truck, conceals their trail, and secretly leaves a protective talisman. He then draws the pursuer away. The Cold Cicada freezes what appears to be Red Hare, only to discover another sludge decoy; Chen Mo subsequently remains uncertain whether his companion survived 45 46 47 50.

Trivia

  • Red Hare Two is not another donkey: It is the name Red Hare gives Li Xia after she becomes the dump truck’s intelligence 33.
  • The “Contract Beast” relationship is a cover story: Chen Mo’s actual awakened Sequence is Blade Wielder, not Beast Tamer 27 31 37.
  • His horse claim becomes a recurring joke: Chen Mo’s explanation that “an old horse knows the way” repeatedly sends the convoy’s leaders into laughter 31 32.
