The three of them sat on a bench in the waiting area beside the front desk of the East End Police Department, and Leonard was getting nervous himself. He watched Harkness joking around with the policewoman at the desk. Several officers glanced their way, then burst out laughing.

"Relax, Lenny, they're not laughing at you." Harkness walked over with a few registration forms. "As police officers, we've all had professional training. We generally don't laugh. Uh... fill these out and describe what you lost. We'll have those drivers bring your belongings back."

Leonard took the forms numbly and clicked the button on the end of the pen several times, but the absurdity of the situation still left him dizzy.
