History
Ji Xiu grew up in poverty with his younger sister, Ji Wei. At roughly sixteen or seventeen, he was sallow and underfed, struggling to find food and medicine for her illness 1. To survive, he sold himself to the Lin Residence for three taels of silver and entered its stables as a servant 89.
A Dao Talisman allowed him to tame the wild horse Thousand Mile Snow, earning Lin Ruyue's favor and a promotion to groom 2. He rapidly developed horsemanship and then pursued martial arts, refusing to accept permanent subservience. After becoming a Martial Warrior, he secured a household-registration plate and escaped the restrictions of slave status 23.
Lu Yu later recruited him to the Lu Estate, where Lu Chengfeng recognized his saber talent and promoted him to Saber-Wearing Retainer. The position granted a monthly salary, weapons, travel privileges, and medicinal resources for cultivation 27. His pill-refining talent and Huang Xuan's support subsequently led to his appointment as Medicine Hall Master of the Wind and Cloud Association 36 42.
As Anning County's Chief Head and Proprietor, Ji Xiu took control of the Eighteen Interlocking Mountain Towns and its mountain-road trade 89 90. He converted gambling-den debtors into paid laborers rather than demanding ruinous repayment, while continuing to personally refine pills for Huang Xuan despite no longer needing to honor their original agreement 96.
After entering Jiangyin Prefecture, Ji Xiu became entangled in struggles involving the Northern Cang Marquis Residence, the Black Market, major trades, sects, and the Heretical Path. He entered the Prefecture Academy, received first-class evaluations on both the Martial and Divine Steles, and became a leading candidate for a Prefect Official title 166.
Ji Xiu's Dao Arts developed alongside his martial cultivation. Jiang Li revealed herself as the ninth Great Xuan Emperor and Human King, then entrusted him with the Immortals Chapter, enabling him to open the Great Dao Purple Palace 183. He later joined the Saber Dao lineage, reclaimed the identity and memories of Wang Quan Wumu through the Yellow Millet Dream, and was recorded as a Saber Dao True Disciple 217 238.
Appearance
Ji Xiu initially appeared sickly, sallow, and emaciated from poverty 1 14. Martial cultivation transformed him into a striking young man with a composed but distant bearing 20 28.
- Clear black-and-white eyes; later associated with the manifestation of Double Pupils 1 228.
- Sharp eyebrows and a blade-like profile 20.
- Rosy complexion and long hanging hair after his early transformations 20.
- Cool, aloof expression that discourages casual familiarity 20 28.
- Commonly carries a narrow saber at his waist, giving the impression of a concealed, dangerous edge 60.
Personality
Ji Xiu is intensely self-reliant. His experience as a groom shaped his refusal to be controlled by wealth, status, or powerful patrons; he rejected the Central Yellow Sect's offer of advancement because worship-based power contradicted his goal of self-realization 93. He also rejects opportunities that would require becoming a dependent retainer rather than walking his own path 160.
He is ambitious but not careless. Even after becoming a Hall Master, he continued training because he understood that status without strength was insecure 43. He is capable of using influence, bargains, and intimidation against entrenched opponents, as shown in his dealings with Fishing Trade head Chen Jing 164.
His kindness is practical rather than naïve. Ji Xiu protects people facing exploitation, helps Zhang Qing and Zheng Jun obtain opportunities, honors promises even at personal cost, and repays those who helped him 66 96 107. He values loyalty enough to support Jiang Li despite the scale of the enemies surrounding her 183 236.
