The story that followed unfolded just as it had in the original: Son Goku and Bulma set off on a journey to gather all seven Dragon Balls.
Unlike in the original, however, Lin Chen's arrival meant that Bulma was no longer a helpless girl, but a martial artist even stronger than Son Goku.
After leaving Mount Paozu, they came under attack from Pterodactyl.
Pterodactyl had intended to snatch Bulma up and eat her, but she caught him during his attack and finished him off with one effortless blow.
Instead, Goku got a thorough scolding from Bulma, who blamed him for failing his duties as her bodyguard and letting her come under attack.
"Bulma, you're clearly scarier than Pterodactyl. Why do you need me to protect you?"
"What's that supposed to mean? I'm just a defenseless girl!" Bulma shouted.
Goku could only shrug.
Next, they encountered bandits and robbers. This time, Goku finally proved useful, taking care of the troublesome fellows for Bulma.
As they traveled, the two grew closer. Bulma was also surprised to discover that after several battles, Son Goku's power level had actually begun to rise.
"Huh? Goku, your power level went up by a point? It's 11 now."
"Power level? What's that?"
That evening, while on the road to the East Coast, Bulma and Goku brought out a building to spend the night in.
After her bath, a bored Bulma picked up the Scouter and took a look at Son Goku, only to discover that the boy's power level had changed.
"Your power level measures how strong you are. The higher the number, the stronger the person," Bulma explained.
"Really? Then what's your power level, Bulma?" Son Goku asked curiously.
