Background / History

Kakashi carries unresolved trauma surrounding the death of his teammate, Rin Nohara. When A accuses him of killing her and betraying Konoha, Kakashi loses his composure as memories of the incident return. The Third Hokage assigns Kakashi to investigate the Uchiha gathering around Naruto. Satoru detects his presence, but Kakashi continues watching from concealment before approaching under the pretense of encountering Shisui by chance 7 8 10.

Kakashi accepts Satoru’s ramen-contest invitation as an opportunity to observe the group. Instead, Satoru enters him in the jumbo challenge alongside Itachi, Sasuke, Shisui, and Naruto, then becomes the host himself. The arrival of the Hokage and two clan heads leaves Kakashi regretting his involvement and privately hoping for a long vacation 10 11 12 13.

In his subsequent report, Kakashi describes Satoru as sociable and unlike other Uchiha, but questions his talent. He speculates that the blindfold may conceal an eyesight problem and identifies him as a likely sensory specialist 16.

Supervising Satoru

Kakashi later becomes responsible for Satoru’s work assignments. After catching him absent again and confronting Orochimaru, Kakashi gives him a three-person mission to complete alone as punishment, then returns to his own ANBU duties 39.

Three years later, Satoru is serving in ANBU and paired with Kakashi for an investigation into one of Orochimaru’s abandoned research facilities 41.

Root Ambush and Yamato’s Recruitment

At the facility, Kakashi encounters A, who attacks under the belief that Kakashi is a traitor. Kakashi subdues him but then saves him from an explosive ambush. This contradiction between Danzō’s accusations and Kakashi’s actions leads A to protect both Kakashi and Satoru against Root 42 44 45.
