|---|---|---|
| Established Nen user | 2 | Already capable of imbuing playing cards with lethal aura; no initial awakening is shown. |
| Reigning Floor Master | 98 | Identified as one of Heavens Arena’s powerhouses above the 200th Floor; his attainment of the title occurs before this account. |
| More condensed Nen | 160 | After two months of preparation for Lin Yan, his aura has become more condensed and dangerous. Their aura clash is described as over ten times fiercer than the earlier rooftop encounter. |
Appearance
- Hair and eyes: Fiery red hair and narrow, golden eyes 65 108 160.
- Makeup: Clown-like face paint, including a teardrop marking 123 160.
- Clothing: A distinctive clown-like combat outfit; he also wears high heels aboard the exam airship 11 169.
- Movement: A graceful, theatrical gait compared to a stage actor’s 11.
- Other identifying traits: Long, slender fingers, a languid voice, and a scent combining blood with perfume 3 65.
Personality
Hisoka pursues the pleasure of dangerous combat rather than victory alone. He enjoys killing, humiliating opponents, and provoking reactions, but weak victims quickly leave him bored. On Zevil Island, even killing three examinees fails to satisfy his desire for a challenging opponent 38 43.
He describes promising fighters as seeds, apples, or forbidden fruit. This imagery reflects his willingness to spare, assist, and observe potential opponents until they become more satisfying to fight. His wager with Lin Yan is an investment in a future duel, not an act of compassion 3 44 127.
Despite his intense excitement, Hisoka can exercise calculated restraint. After watching Lin Yan defeat Jidou, he suppresses his aura with Zetsu rather than attack immediately. During their rooftop duel, he recognizes Lin Yan’s exhaustion and deliberately changes to an attrition strategy 113 129.
Injury and mortal danger often intensify his enthusiasm. Gon’s punch, Lin Yan’s sword wounds, and the threat of a fatal counterattack all excite him. His eventual defeat in Yorknew briefly leaves him despairing, but his fascination with Lin Yan persists 126 129 130 170.
Abilities & Skills
Bungee Gum
Hisoka’s signature ability gives his aura both rubber-like elasticity and chewing-gum-like stickiness 128.
- Restraint: Immobilizes Gon through contact and binds him with invisible aura threads 125 126.
- Webs and nets: Spreads aura across an area to capture opponents from multiple directions 126 128.
- Mobility: Uses severed aura remnants as anchor points to launch himself around the rooftop 129.
- Close combat: Adds sticky or forceful effects to punches and kicks 129.
- Resistance: Hisoka considers ordinary blades and physical attacks ineffective against its flexible aura structure 128.
- Limit: Lin Yan’s sword qi dismantles that structure, allowing Gengjin to sever the threads rather than become trapped 128.
Texture Surprise
Texture Surprise provides deception during combat. The supplied encounters depict it creating illusions that misdirect Gon and obscure Hisoka’s movements 125 170.
- Makes Gon’s attacks miss through deceptive visual effects 125.
- Combines with Bungee Gum during rapid, unpredictable movement 170.
- Cannot conceal Hisoka from Lin Yan’s Divine Sense; Gengjin Sword Aura cuts through the deception and wounds his real body 170.
Nen Control and Perception
- En: Detects minute disturbances over a wide area. Lin Yan’s coordinated bursts of light, dust, steam, and shifting air briefly disrupt it 40 41.
- Gyo: Examines Gengjin closely enough to identify its lack of conventional Nen characteristics 113.
- Zetsu: Suppresses his aura while he restrains his excitement and observes Lin Yan 113.
- Ken: Provides an aura defense, although Lin Yan’s intensified sword energy shows signs of puncturing it 130.
- Hardening: Reinforces a playing card for a potentially fatal strike against Lin Yan’s heart 131.
- Energy transmission: Sends invasive Nen along Gon’s fishing line after catching it, forcing Lin Yan to break the line 42.
Aura Pressure and Killing Intent
Hisoka can attack an opponent’s composure before physical combat begins 11 107.
- Projects killing intent through the storage-room door, nearly destabilizing Lin Yan’s Foundation Establishment 11.
- Overwhelms newly awakened Nen users; increased pressure makes Killua spit blood and drop to one knee 107.
- Uses pressure as a test of promising fighters’ resilience 107.
- His malice threatens damage beyond ordinary physical injury, prompting Lin Yan to intervene to protect Gon and Killua 110.
- Lin Yan’s Geng Metal Sword Intent can cut through the pressure rather than match it with competing aura 108.
Martial Arts and Combat Analysis
- Speed and footwork: Moves faster than Gon can track and attacks from unpredictable angles 71 125.
- Striking power: Nearly breaks Gon’s Nen-enhanced defense with an ordinary attack 125.
- Card attacks: Throws precise, Nen-enhanced cards capable of piercing steel plates and delivering saturation attacks from every direction 125 129.
- Tactical adaptation: Identifies the strain of maintaining Lin Yan’s sword techniques and prolongs the fight to exhaust him 129 130.
- Vulnerabilities: Spirit-Shaking briefly freezes his mind, while Lin Yan’s later sword technique severs his aura and temporarily removes his ability to fight 130 170.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Playing cards — Primary weapons for thrown attacks, close-range cuts, and Nen-enhanced killing blows 2 71 129.
- No. 44 Hunter Exam badge — Lin Yan’s assigned target during the island phase; taken with Gon’s fishing rod 39 42.
- Lin Yan’s No. 81 badge — Accepted as a token of their wager 44.
- Four of hearts — Left beside Lin Yan after the swamp encounter as a threatening mark 3.
Relationships
- Lin Yan — Begins as an unusual prospective victim, becomes a protected investment under their wager, and eventually defeats Hisoka decisively. Lin Yan rejects being treated as food and calls Hisoka a “whetstone” for his sword 3 44 127 170.
- Gon Freecss — A promising “Little Apple.” Hisoka dominates their arena match but becomes exhilarated when Gon evades his attacks and lands a damaging punch 125 126 127.
- Kurapika — Provokes him during the final exam, recognizes his developing potential, and surrenders after offering information about the Spider 71. That information directs Kurapika toward Yorknew’s September auction 83.
- Killua Zoldyck — Threatens him when he guards Lin Yan’s storage room, then later tests his resolve with overwhelming aura pressure 11 107.
- Illumi Zoldyck — A fighter Hisoka names among his desired opponents. They also discuss the danger of Lin Yan’s trip to the Zoldyck estate 65 75.
- Chrollo Lucilfer — Another desired opponent. Hisoka hopes Lin Yan might eliminate other Troupe members, leaving Chrollo available for him alone 65 131.
- Isaac Netero — Calls the chairman the “ripest fruit” he wants to fight during his exam interview 65.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Hunter Exam
Hisoka kills the disguised Man-Faced Ape with playing cards and confirms Satotz as the genuine examiner. Lin Yan’s intense reaction to the Nen around those cards draws his attention 2.
In Swindlers’ Swamp, he discovers Lin Yan feigning death among corpses. Rather than kill him, he encourages the unfamiliar “seed” to grow. His later approach to the airship storage room nearly ruins Lin Yan’s cultivation, but the pressure instead helps catalyze an embryonic golden core 3 10 11.
During the island phase, Lin Yan exploits a brief lapse after a killing, disrupts Hisoka’s perception with traps, and steals badge 44. Hisoka pursues him until Lin Yan demonstrates true qi and negotiates a wager: time to grow in exchange for a future fight. Hisoka accepts badge 81 and supplies three additional badges toward Lin Yan’s exam score 41 42 43 44.
In the final exam, Hisoka dominates Kurapika until controlled scarlet-eyed resolve allows Kurapika to wound him. He then offers Spider information and surrenders, preserving another potential opponent. Killua’s later disqualification results in the remaining candidates passing 71 75.
Heavens Arena
As a reigning Floor Master, Hisoka watches Lin Yan’s development and the tower-wide energy disturbance caused by his formation. He confronts Gon and Killua with malicious aura on the 200th Floor, but Lin Yan cuts through it and silently severs a lock of his hair 98 103 107 108.
Hisoka wins his official match against Gon by a wide points margin. Gon nevertheless predicts his attacks and lands a punch that draws blood and breaks teeth, confirming the potential Hisoka wanted to see 126 127.
Immediately afterward, Hisoka fights Lin Yan on the rooftop. Gengjin dismantles Bungee Gum and destroys his card barrage, but Hisoka’s sustained attacks drain Lin Yan. Spirit-Shaking reverses the situation, producing a standoff in which each holds a fatal attack just short of the other 128 129 130 131.
Neither dies. Hisoka proposes the Phantom Troupe as further “whetstones” for Lin Yan and arranges another meeting in Yorknew on September 1 131 132.
Yorknew City
After sensing Lin Yan’s transformed aura, Hisoka sends an invitation to an abandoned cannery. He has also spent the intervening two months refining his own Nen for their next confrontation 159 160.
Their scheduled September 1 duel takes place in a deserted city plaza, witnessed by the Phantom Troupe, Netero, Ging, and other Association members. Hisoka’s deception, card barrage, and close-range attacks all fail against Lin Yan’s perception, sword formation, and physical strength 169 170.
Lin Yan ends the fight with One Sword Breaks Ten Thousand Arts, cutting through Hisoka’s cards and severing his Nen aura. Hisoka survives, but is temporarily incapable of fighting 170.
