Power Progression

Stage / Realm / Level Chapter Notes
Internal breath awakened 1 25 Heel Breathing helps him endure the marathon. A faint internal current begins circulating and relieving fatigue; he later attributes its awakening to crossing worlds.
Foundation Establishment — Dantian Embryo 11 21 Uses the Qingjing Jing to withstand Hisoka’s killing intent, compressing qi and consciousness into an embryonic core. Foundation Establishment awakens divine sense and transforms his perception.
First golden marking 45 His near-fatal encounter with Hisoka produces a marking on the Dantian Embryo. Energy absorption and refinement improve, damaged meridians recover, and total power rises by roughly 30%.
Marrow-washed body 59 Reports a lighter, clearer body after Marrow-Washing.
Further true qi refinement 78 Refines Kukuroo Mountain’s baleful energy alongside his students’ training. Demonstrates his increased strength by opening the first three Testing Gates.
Natal Sword Weapon completed 105 106 Purifies dragon-scale iron into the Heart of Metal, binds it with vital blood, and stores the resulting Sword Pellet beside his Dantian Embryo. Forging leaves him unconscious.
Geng Metal Sword Intent demonstrated 108 110 Cuts through Hisoka’s hostile Nen pressure using conceptual sword intent. The technique exhausts both his qi and spirit.
Late Refining Essence into Qi stabilized 119 124 Hundred-Herb Spirit Liquid and abundant food restore his damaged cultivation. Marrow-Washing and Meridian-Cleansing increase physical strength by at least 30%.
Completion of Refining Essence into Qi 131 His Dantian Embryo becomes smooth and lustrous, but its reserves remain insufficient for sustained combat against Hisoka. Identifies Golden Core formation as his next breakthrough.
Yi Wood bodily transformation 156 Gradually absorbs the Essence of Yi Wood. Meridians widen, bones become denser, and true qi gains “ceaseless vitality,” substantially improving endurance and recovery.
Yi Wood and Li Fire refinement 164 169 Begins subduing Li Fire with Pure Yang True Qi. The two elemental essences subsequently strengthen his Dantian Embryo and refine his qi toward Core Formation.
Chrollo’s abilities acquired 171 172 Forces Chrollo to surrender all his abilities. The rules contained in Skill Hunter fuse with Yi Wood and Li Fire within the Dantian Embryo.
Golden Core — Refining Qi into Spirit 131 172 Refines the embryo until it shatters and produces a Golden Core. Gains stronger bodily and spiritual faculties and demonstrates rudimentary spatial control by cutting a rift.

Background / History

Before transmigrating, Lin Yan studied Daoist cultivation theory and practiced cultivation for health. He was reading a newly acquired copy of the Cantong Qi in his study immediately before awakening in the Hunter Exam. Despite possessing an extensive theoretical framework, he considers his own aptitude ordinary rather than exceptional 1 3 25.

Recognizing Gon, Killua, Kurapika, and Hisoka, he realizes that he has entered the Hunter x Hunter world. Initially, he intends to use Nen to pursue the Golden Core Great Way. His developing true qi is subsequently recognized as a distinct system, though he later learns to use Nen as a vessel for Daoist techniques 1 44 134.

His outsider identity also affects divination. Neon’s Lovely Ghostwriter cannot locate his normal fate “file,” and the Hunter Association’s investigation finds no records of his past 141 169.

Appearance

Lin Yan is a young man whose frail, ordinary-looking exterior frequently causes opponents to underestimate him 111 138 140.

  • Clothing: Initially awakens in unfamiliar casual clothes; later favors loose white clothing and snow-white robes 1 111 155.
  • Hands: Fair, slender fingers with neatly trimmed nails, described as more scholar-like than martial 149.
  • Hair: Long and jet-black; gains a pronounced lustrous sheen after refining Yi Wood essence 156.
  • Post-transformation features: Jade-smooth skin, faintly luminous blood beneath the skin, and an emerald flash in his eyes 156.
  • Bearing: His initially exposed, blade-like sharpness becomes restrained beneath a warm, jade-like presence after his Yi Wood transformation 156 159.

Personality

Lin Yan’s central conviction is that every encounter can temper his cultivation. Early fear of Hisoka becomes motivation to grow, and he eventually treats powerful adversaries as “whetstones” rather than obstacles to avoid. Netero recognizes that this philosophy is supported by his conduct through repeated near-death experiences 3 65 127.

He is practical about resources and largely indifferent to prestige. He wants a Hunter License for travel and access to restricted places, rejects a direct promotion to Heavens Arena’s hundredth floor to collect more prize money, and stages apparent narrow victories to manipulate betting odds 65 87 90 93.

His calmness does not eliminate recklessness. Forging his sword initially absorbs his attention so completely that he overlooks the danger to Gon and Killua. When Wing confronts him, he admits the mistake and arranges for Wing to teach and protect them while guarding the forging process 101 102.

His compassion is selective and sometimes severe. He heals companions, encourages Killua’s independence, and helps Kurapika avoid destroying himself through revenge. Conversely, he takes Meteor City’s sacred fruit despite its guardians, kills attackers who threaten him, and refuses to accept the elders’ claim that he owes them compensation. Sarah’s habit of stealing life particularly disgusts him, prompting him to condemn her as an “Evil Cultivator” 57 143 149 150 152 157 158.

Abilities & Skills

True Qi and Internal Cultivation

  • Dantian-based power: Circulates and refines energy internally rather than relying solely on outward Nen projection. Wing identifies his methods as a possible separate martial system 88.
  • Bodily enhancement: Strengthens muscles, bones, meridians, and physical endurance. With cultivated true qi, opens all three initial Testing Gates, including the sixteen-ton third gate 78 156.
  • Healing: Restores Leorio’s circulation and uses Yi Wood life essence to stabilize Kurapika’s depleted vital foundation 57 157 158.
  • Food refinement: Rapidly converts large meals into usable energy during recovery 110 124.
  • Early limitation: Before Golden Core formation, his qi reserves and recovery rate make prolonged combat dangerous. Sword control, movement, spiritual attacks, and close combat all contribute to depletion 130 133.

Breathing, Meditation, and Concealment

  • Heel Breathing: Conserves energy during prolonged running 1.
  • Turtle-Breathing Technique: Suppresses heartbeat and respiration to imitate death. It does not hide his unusual circulating aura from Hisoka 3.
  • Fetal Breathing: Suppresses his presence and concentrates his mind while preparing an ambush 40.
  • Nature harmonization: Draws earth qi through his bare feet, making his aura resemble surrounding vegetation and masking his human presence 35 39.
  • Qingjing Jing: Maintains clarity during killing intent, medicinal reconstruction, and divination backlash 11 119 133.
  • Sitting in Oblivion: Dissolves and coexists with Netero’s pressure rather than directly resisting it; failure would have exposed his mind to collapse 59.
  • Midnight-Noon Flow: Refines true qi destabilized by repeated bursts of power 57.

Divine Sense and Qi Observation

  • Combat perception: Reads minute muscle contractions, movement rhythms, and weaknesses in an opponent’s exertion 21.
  • Awareness without sight: Tracks Hisoka and his flying cards with closed eyes 129.
  • Aura interpretation: Detects emotional states, hostile intent, and suggestive energy used by a con man 14 45.
  • Environmental sensing: Uses air disturbances to detect a concealed sniper approximately six hundred meters away 35.
  • Resource detection: Locates Yi Wood’s life energy beneath Meteor City’s deathly aura 142.
  • Expanded range: His divine sense covers Yorknew City during the aftermath of his confrontation with the Troupe 168.
  • Spirit Shock: Can shake even Hisoka’s mind long enough to create a potentially fatal opening 133.
  • Limitation: Excessive use damages his sea of consciousness, disrupts vision, and can prevent him from mobilizing true qi 114 130.

Martial Arts and Force Redirection

  • Going with the Flow: Uses minimal adjustments to evade Johns while remaining within a three-step area 21.
  • Listening to Force: Reads muscular motion and force through physical contact, allowing him to fight Hanzo with his eyes closed 68.
  • Silk-Winding Force, Spiral Burst: Redirects Hanzo’s committed punch and delivers a penetrating counterstrike to his chest 68.
  • Fine bodily control: Dissipates heavy impacts through precisely timed muscular vibration without using Ten 93.
  • Muscle-Tendon and Bone-Strengthening Breathing Method: Teaches Gon, Leorio, and Kurapika coordinated whole-body exertion; seven days of training enable them to handle fifty-kilogram weighted suits comfortably 78.
  • Silent Step: Uses true qi to approach Johns soundlessly 22.

Sword Formula Finger and Geng Metal Sword Intent

  • Sword Formula Finger: Joins the index and middle fingers to concentrate and project true qi. Against Johns, the resulting burst destroys internal muscle, nerves, and bones while leaving the skin intact 21 22.
  • Geng Metal Sword Intent: Embodies the concept of severance through will and understanding of the sword; it is explicitly distinguished from ordinary energy and Nen aura 108.
  • Sword Intent Shatters Illusion: Cuts an opening through Hisoka’s hostile Nen pressure to free Gon and Killua. Its cost includes both qi and spirit 108 110.
  • Defensive barrier: Condensed sword intent nullifies the Troupe’s coordinated abilities and prevents Nobunaga’s En from penetrating the space around him 167.
  • Ranged sword energy: Cuts a fleeing Executioner hundreds of meters away and delivers a warning strike to an elder kilometers away 149 152.
  • One Sword Breaks Ten Thousand Arts: Cuts through Hisoka’s cards and severs his Nen aura, temporarily leaving him unable to fight 170.
  • Spatial cutting: After forming his Golden Core, opens a rift with Gengjin Sword Aura 172.

Gengjin Sword Pellet Control

  • Thought-linked attacks: Directs his Natal Sword Weapon through divine sense; its first demonstration silently slices an alloy support pillar 106.
  • Nen dismantling: Breaks down Bungee Gum’s aura structure rather than becoming stuck in it 128.
  • Precision control: Develops divine-sense “gossamer threads” capable of stripping a target’s clothing without injuring the wearer 124.
  • Sword nets and formations: Intercepts Nen-enhanced cards with a golden sword net and later withstands Hisoka’s full barrage for several minutes 129 170.
  • Autonomous protection: The pellet supports him when he falls and intercepts Shadaso’s attack without conscious direction 106 114.
  • Limitation: Fine control consumes substantial spirit and qi. Severe overdraft leaves him unable to command active attacks, even when the weapon can still respond defensively 118 128 130.

Formations, Talismans, and Refining

  • Five Elements Misdirection: Combines gunpowder, terrain, steam, dust, and flashes to seek a momentary perceptual blind spot. This is a crude physical trap, not a true formation or a means of injuring Hisoka 40.
  • Heavenly Dipper Grand Formation: Inscribes thirty-six jade stones to channel Heavens Arena’s accumulated turbulent energy into dragon-scale iron 100 101.
  • Artifact refining: Remakes materials’ internal energy structures, purifies ore into the Heart of Metal, and binds the resulting weapon with vital blood 100 105.
  • Hundred-Herb Spirit Liquid: Uses Spirit-Gathering and Refining Talismans to extract medicinal essences in a bathtub. The treatment rebuilds his damaged cultivation but could kill him if mishandled 119.
  • Nen–Dao synthesis: Uses Nen as “ink” and Daoist patterns as the organizing principle for a paper-based tracking art derived from Paper-Cutting into Soldiers 134.
  • Land-based covenant: Proposes an oath making Meteor City’s land, rather than the elders’ own Nen, the other party to the contract 154.
  • Earth-vein manipulation: Redirects Meteor City’s earth veins at considerable cost to his divine sense 156.

Purification and Pure Yang Techniques

  • Resentment purification: Uses Pure Yang energy against hostile post-mortem Nen 50.
  • Golden Light Divine Mantra: Draws spiritual talismans in the air and purifies resentment-born spirits 146.
  • Vine restoration: Channels Pure Yang True Qi through the Ghost-Faced Withered Vine, removing its resentment and restoring its life 147.
  • Pure Yang: Demon Refinement: Purifies Sarah’s corrosive blood mist and reduces her to dust 150.
  • Immovable Wisdom King Seal: Teaches Kurapika a breathing-and-seal method for calming the spirit and suppressing inner demons, likening it to forced Zetsu with deeper psychological effects 158.

Divination and Fate Interaction

  • Mind Divination: Attempts Plum Blossom Numerology, but a chaotic “Nen Mist” rejects his divine sense and causes violent backlash 133.
  • Forced fortune-telling connection: Helps Lovely Ghostwriter produce a prophecy despite his missing fate “file.” The attempt exhausts Neon’s Nen Beast 141.
  • Resistance to prediction and imitation: Chrollo’s prophecy backfires against him, while an attempt to copy his power ends with Pure Yang True Qi destroying Copy Eye 167.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Gengjin / Red-Gold Sword Pellet — Natal Sword Weapon forged from dragon-scale iron’s Heart of Metal and bound to his life and soul. Can rest in his sleeve or be nurtured within his dantian; Lin Yan regards it as a partner, not a Nen beast 105 106 110.
  • Thirty-six jade formation stones — Inscribed components of the Heavenly Dipper Grand Formation used during sword forging 100.
  • Essence of Yi Wood — Emerald-green fruit taken from the purified Ghost-Faced Withered Vine. Retains most of its substance after his first transformative absorption, requiring gradual refinement 147 156.
  • Essence of Li Fire — Resistant, black-flamed elemental essence subdued with Pure Yang True Qi and later incorporated into his Golden Core 164 172.
  • Gon’s fishing rod — Borrowed for the Zevil Island plan because Lin Yan believes it carries Gon’s exceptional fortune; successfully resonates with his true qi 39 40.
  • Shibao’s sniper rifle and ammunition — Scavenged and dismantled for trap materials rather than retained solely as a firearm 38 40.
  • Protective jade pendant — Infused with sword intent and given to Neon. Intended to guard her from mortal danger; its fading glow later indicates repeated protective activity 141 159.

Relationships

  • Gon Freecss — Companion and student. Lin Yan interprets Gon’s natural harmony with the world as an “innate Dao body,” borrows his fishing rod, protects him from Hisoka, and advises him to read intent rather than tricks 25 39 108 124.
  • Killua Zoldyck — Friend and student. Killua protects his cultivation room from Hisoka; Lin Yan helps loosen Illumi’s restraints and encourages Killua to seek his own wishes 11 57 60.
  • Kurapika — Companion and cultivation adviser’s recipient. Lin Yan stabilizes his damaged vitality, teaches mental discipline, and leaves Uvogin available for interrogation about the Scarlet Eyes 157 158 167 171.
  • Leorio — Companion and student. Lin Yan warns him against a deceptive wager, helps him recover from self-reproach, heals his circulation, and trains him for the Testing Gate 14 17 57 78.
  • Hisoka — Predatory sponsor and recurring adversary. Their wager buys Lin Yan time to grow in return for a future fight. Lin Yan ultimately defeats him in Yorknew but does not kill him 44 131 170.
  • Wing — Martial counterpart, critic, and guardian. Initially questions Lin Yan’s methods, later treats him as an equal, teaches Gon and Killua by agreement, and watches over Lin Yan after forging 97 101 102 106.
  • Zushi — Admirer who asks to become his disciple and cultivate immortality; Wing rejects the suggestion and assigns extra training 124.
  • Neon Nostrade — Divination partner and protected ward. Her prophecy directs his resource search; he supplies a protective pendant and imposes restrictions on further fortune-telling. She becomes strongly attached to him 141 159.
  • Light Nostrade — Transactional ally. Exchanges access to Neon’s ability for Lin Yan’s protection of the family during the auction 140 141.
  • Illumi Zoldyck — Antagonist who considers Lin Yan an unpredictable variable interfering with Killua’s upbringing 60 65.
  • Chrollo Lucilfer — Adversary whose attempts to predict, copy, and overwhelm Lin Yan fail. Later surrenders all his abilities to prevent the Troupe’s annihilation 167 171.
  • Netero and Ging Freecss — Interested observers. Investigate his unfamiliar cultivation, witness the Hisoka duel, and refrain from disturbing his Golden Core breakthrough 168 170 172.
  • Hài and Meteor City’s Elders’ Council — Hostile authorities forced into negotiation after Lin Yan defeats their enforcers. Hài eventually prioritizes the city’s renewed prospects over the council’s pride 151 152 154.
