Background / History
Childhood and the Clan Feud
Tobirama grows up as a younger son of Senju clan leader Butsuma and the younger brother of Hashirama. He accompanies his father to a confrontation with Uchiha Tajima and Izuna after the adults discover Hashirama and Madara’s secret friendship. Both fathers target the opposing younger son to destabilize their rival. Gamu’s disguised ambush interrupts the battle, and Tobirama mistakenly considers whether other enemy clans arranged the attack 3.
During Gamu’s later visit to the Senju compound, Tobirama repeatedly reminds Hashirama to observe diplomatic etiquette. He escorts Gamu out of the formal meeting and becomes his student after witnessing the three-seal Water Dragon Bullet. Watching Gamu spar with Hashirama reveals their shared preference for deceptive combat, although Gamu’s behavior and reckless summoning experiments alarm him 7 8 9.
The Mine Battle and Ceasefire
Tobirama designs many of the Senju Mine’s defenses, only to confront those same fortifications after the Uchiha capture it. He reluctantly joins Gamu and Hashirama’s rear assault, using a Water Dragon as a midair platform for their improvised launch. During the subsequent confrontation, he fights Izuna and prevents him from attacking Gamu while Gamu gathers senjutsu chakra 14.
The Kaguya Clan’s betrayal forces Tobirama and Izuna to suspend their feud. After Wakanori kills Butsuma and Tajima, Tobirama follows Gamu’s instruction to organize a joint defense and prioritizes his clansmen’s survival. In the aftermath, he tells Izuna that protecting the living can justify setting aside hatred without forgetting their brothers’ deaths 15 16.
War and Konoha’s Founding
Tobirama later plants spies in other nations and anticipates conflict between emerging ninja villages. He initially recommends Gamu as a village leader, valuing his decisiveness, restraint, strength, and ability to reconcile the Senju and Uchiha. Gamu declines and instead proposes shared leadership for Hashirama and Madara 44.
During the invasion by forces from the Lands of Water and Lightning, Tobirama cooperates with Izuna on logistics despite their mutual distrust. His Flying Thunder God rescues Hashirama from Jun’s ambush and lets Hashirama respond across multiple fronts. Tobirama also helps evacuate Uzushiogakure before its destruction; the evacuation prevents casualties 56 57 58.
At Konoha’s founding meeting, Tobirama secures Gamu’s attendance as the Uzumaki representative. The approved arrangement makes Hashirama responsible for foreign affairs and Madara for internal affairs, with Izuna assisting Hashirama and Tobirama assisting Madara 63.
Modernization and Education
Tobirama and Madara organize secret research into the appliances, textbooks, and more than a thousand laptops Gamu brings from another world. Their cooperation extends from village administration into technological development 82.
Tobirama produces an electric light as the first practical invention derived from those materials. He uses Shadow Clones to analyze the information, restricts its distribution, and works so intensely that he neglects food and sleep. At the Ninja Academy’s opening, he agrees with Gamu’s proposal to establish schools for civilian children as well 87.
Ōtsutsuki Attack and Hokage Succession
When the Ōtsutsuki devastate Konoha and capture Mito, Esdeath, and seven tailed beasts, Tobirama coordinates the emergency response. He agrees to sustain Gamu’s dimensional gateway and links their Flying Thunder God marks. After Hashirama and Madara recover with Six Paths power, he helps them reach the battlefield 102 104.
Momoshiki later escapes Tobirama using Flying Thunder God, having retained an absorbed mark as a means of retreat 104 105.
Following Izuna’s decision to retire from frontline duty and Madara’s plan to travel, Madara nominates Tobirama as the next Hokage. Hashirama and Gamu agree. Tobirama initially suspects a prank, then accepts responsibility for managing Konoha 108.
Personality
Tobirama is composed, practical, and attentive to obligations. He regularly corrects Hashirama’s lapses in etiquette and worries about the damage his brother’s sparring can cause. Gamu’s familiarity irritates him, but demonstrated skill quickly earns his respect 7 8 44.
His hostility toward the Uchiha is rooted in clan warfare and the deaths of his brothers. After the mine’s capture, he wants the clan destroyed; after the Kaguya disaster, he accepts that his people’s future matters more than continued revenge. This pragmatism eventually allows him to work efficiently under Madara and accept Madara’s recommendation for Hokage 14 16 82 108.
He enjoys cunning tactics and takes pride in his inventions and defenses. Comparing himself with Hashirama’s overwhelming strength pushes him toward ninjutsu research, although he recognizes that their power gap keeps widening. His dedication later extends to technology, where his caution over information sharing contrasts with his tendency to overwork 8 9 14 87.

Trivia
- The “copyright” joke changes the invention timeline: the narration identifies Shadow Clone as a technique normally invented by Tobirama, but Gamu recreates it while Tobirama is still a child and jokingly claims ownership 2.
- He indirectly inspires Gamu before they collaborate: Gamu models many of his tactics on Tobirama’s anime combat methods, making Tobirama a mentor in a sense unknown to him 20.
- He researches Sage Mode without being shown mastering it: Tobirama knows the Three Great Sage Regions from ancient texts and secretly listens to Gamu’s explanation of Hashirama’s training 8 9.
