Power Progression

Appearance
- Spiky hair: Introduced as the “hedgehog head” beside the bowl-cut Hashirama 1.
- Handsome features: Uzumaki Gamu remarks on his increasingly handsome appearance as he grows toward his adult proportions 11.
- Carefully maintained image: Usually presents himself as cool and composed, with his wild laughter singled out as an exception 11.
- Changing eyes: His ocular development progresses from Sharingan to Mangekyō, Eternal Mangekyō, and eventually Six-Tomoe Rinnegan 3 25 57 104.
Personality
Madara is proud, competitive, and sharp-tongued. As a child, he takes losing seriously and reacts explosively to teasing, but can set aside his pride when he believes he has upset Hashirama. Uzumaki Gamu and Hashirama call him a tsundere because his abrasive manner often conceals affection or embarrassment 1 2.
His skepticism extends beyond personal distrust. When Uzumaki Gamu proposes an overwhelmingly powerful peacekeeping organization, Madara immediately questions whether it could become a dictatorship or collapse into corruption. He is more willing than Hashirama to impose peace through force, but does not accept a plan merely because it promises strength 2.
Uzumaki Gamu’s advice gradually changes how Madara treats others. Initially, he claims that people unable to withstand his glare are unworthy of speaking to him; later, he plays with children, teaches them ninjutsu, and earns villagers’ trust through sustained administrative work. His pride remains, but no longer prevents cooperation with Tobirama or friendly exchanges with ordinary residents 46 56 82.
Abilities & Skills
Sharingan and Genjutsu
Madara’s Sharingan provides enhanced perception, chakra observation, copying, and hypnosis. He demonstrates its genjutsu directly by incapacitating Kaguya Jun during the confrontation in the daimyo’s capital 3 11.
- Analyzes Uzumaki Gamu’s Wood Release attempt and identifies that insufficient chakra is not the cause of its weakness 25.
- Resists Kaguya Jun’s consciousness-blanking ocular technique with his own ocular power 57.
- Is one of only two contemporary Uchiha, alongside Izuna, whom he considers capable of suppressing a tailed beast 46.
- Prolonged Mangekyō use damages his eyesight before his transplant of Izuna’s eyes 57.
Susanoo
Susanoo materializes Madara’s chakra into a giant warrior that combines offense and defense. His early skeletal manifestation encloses his body and can wield simple weapons 25.
- Protects him from direct attacks while fighting Kaguya Jun. Jun’s contact with the Susanoo also breaks the immobilizing genjutsu affecting Madara 57.
- Its early stage has gaps beneath the feet and can be breached by sufficiently powerful attacks; Uzumaki Gamu damages its armor during their spar 25.
- Combines with Hashirama’s power to repel Jun’s Susanoo-armored Nine-Tails 58.
- Later forms a three-person Majestic Attire: Susanoo combination with Hashirama’s wood and Uzumaki Gamu’s Kurama against Momoshiki 104.
Rinnegan: Limbo — Border Jail
After receiving Six Paths power, Madara uses Limbo to produce shadows of himself that can intercept attacks or ambush opponents 104.
- One Rinnegan permits one shadow; two permit up to four 104.
- Ordinary people cannot see or sense the shadows. Rinnegan users can see them, while practitioners of Six Paths Senjutsu can sense them 104.
- Can exchange positions with his Limbo shadows, using the technique to create openings against Momoshiki 104.
- Loses its overwhelming concealment advantage against opponents who possess Rinnegan or Six Paths power 104.
Fire Release, Weapons, and Clones
Madara’s childhood fighting style centers on Fire Release, shuriken throwing, and swordsmanship 3.
- Uses a Great Fireball to attack the infiltrating Senju–Uzumaki group at the mine 14.
- Is associated with Fire Release: Majestic Destroyer Flame, a broad-area flame technique that Uzumaki Gamu also uses 8.
- Uses a Shadow Clone to continue handling office paperwork while joining Hashirama and Uzumaki Gamu for drinks 85.
Leadership and Administration
As joint First Hokage, Madara manages Konoha’s internal affairs while Hashirama handles foreign relations. Tobirama serves as his assistant 63.
- Earns public trust through hard work and personal attention to village affairs 82.
- Agrees to gradually disperse the Uchiha into the wider village rather than preserve a separate clan enclave 63.
- Supports research into imported technology and approves railway development to improve transport, trade, and food supplies 82.
- Oversees the Ninja Academy and adopts Uzumaki Gamu’s “foundation stones” message as its motto 82 88.
Contract with Yama
Madara accepts the same otherworld missions as Uzumaki Gamu after deciding that Konoha and the Uchiha are secure enough for him to leave 107.
- His contract with Yama slows his aging 111.
- Chooses to travel alone for training and departs for the Attack on Titan world 108 111.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Shuriken and swords — Core components of his fighting style from childhood 3.
- Izuna’s Mangekyō Sharingan — Transplanted to replace his failing eyes and awaken the Eternal Mangekyō Sharingan 57 58.
- Uchiha stone tablet — A clan heirloom he reads using his Sharingan. Its Mangekyō-readable passages describe the power obtained by combining Uchiha and Senju abilities; Uzumaki Gamu later reveals that Black Zetsu altered it 25 26.
- Discarded original eyes — Mysteriously disappear after their removal. Black Zetsu later uses them with Hashirama’s cells in his attempt to cultivate the Rinnegan in Kaguya Shin Jun 58 61 88.
Relationships
- Hashirama Senju — Childhood friend, sworn brother, rival, and fellow First Hokage. Their clan obligations repeatedly force them into combat, but they preserve their bond and eventually govern Konoha together 1 3 14 63.
- Uzumaki Gamu / Gamu Uzumaki — Sworn brother and mediator. Protects their childhood friendship, warns Madara about Black Zetsu, encourages his growth as a leader, and nominates him as joint Hokage 3 46 63.
- Izuna Uchiha — Surviving younger brother. Gives Madara his eyes so he can protect their village; later plans to establish an Uchiha branch in Rōran 2 58 108.
- Tajima Uchiha — Father and former clan leader. Orders Madara to act against his friends and mistakes his happy Sharingan awakening for grief over betrayal. His death forces Madara into leadership 3 15 16.
- Tobirama Senju — Former enemy, administrative partner, and successor. Madara eventually sets aside his prejudice, works efficiently with him, and nominates him as the next Hokage 63 82 108.
- Hikari / Uchiha Nanashi — A clanswoman whose historical exploitation by the Uchiha leaves Madara feeling guilty and uncertain how to face her 57.
- Kaguya Jun — Wartime enemy. Madara holds him off while Hashirama recovers, sacrificing much of his eyesight during the prolonged fighting 57.
- Black Zetsu — Hidden enemy identified by Uzumaki Gamu. Madara agrees to investigate a missing clansman after learning that Zetsu may target Izuna to destabilize him 46.
Story Role / Major Arcs
River Friendship and the Shared Dream
Madara first meets Uzumaki Gamu while skipping stones with Hashirama. A fishing competition, teasing, and a shared meal establish their rapport, although Madara remains cautious about trusting strangers. Their next meeting turns toward the losses inflicted by war and Uzumaki Gamu’s proposal to prevent conflict through overwhelming military deterrence 1 2.
The three swear brotherhood before a statue of Lord Guan and begin training together. When their families discover the friendship, Madara and Hashirama warn each other of the trap awaiting them. Uzumaki Gamu’s disguised ambush interrupts their fathers’ fight, allowing the boys to preserve their bond behind public declarations of hostility 3.
Kaguya Betrayal and Clan Succession
At the contested mine, Madara anticipates Uzumaki Gamu’s unconventional infiltration route and intercepts the group with Izuna. He fights Hashirama reluctantly, then immediately proposes a truce when Uzumaki Gamu detects the Kaguya attacking all sides 14.
Madara and Hashirama arrive in time to witness Wakanori kill their fathers. They attack him together, but require Uzumaki Gamu’s intervention to survive. With the old leaders and many elders dead, Madara assumes leadership of the Uchiha and accepts a ceasefire with the Senju 15 16.
Reconciliation and Resistance to Manipulation
Uzumaki Gamu’s return brings a competitive reunion and revelations about the clans’ ancestry. Madara learns that the Senju–Uchiha feud originated with Indra and Asura, and that Black Zetsu manipulated their descendants and altered the Uchiha tablet. He and Hashirama resolve to unite the major clans in a shinobi village 25 26.
Reconciliation remains incomplete. Madara accepts advice to earn trust through practical effort, but declines the wedding feast at the Senju compound because of lingering clan tensions. Uzumaki Gamu also warns him that Izuna could become a target in an attempt to turn him against Hashirama 46.
War and Konoha’s Founding
During Uzumaki Gamu’s four-year absence, an invasion forces the Land of Fire’s clans into a common alliance. Madara becomes a principal defender against Kaguya Jun after Hashirama is nearly killed. Two months of fighting strain his Mangekyō until Izuna’s gift of his eyes enables him to regain full fighting strength 56 57 58.
Madara and Hashirama repel Jun’s armored Nine-Tails together, though the battle destroys Uzushiogakure. They later restrain Jun’s tailed beasts while Uzumaki Gamu confronts him separately 58 59.
At Konoha’s founding meeting, Uzumaki Gamu nominates both men as leaders. Madara becomes joint First Hokage and accepts gradual Uchiha integration. His administration subsequently supports technological research, infrastructure planning, and the Ninja Academy 63 82 88.
Ōtsutsuki Assault
The attack by Momoshiki, Kinshiki, and Urashiki leaves Madara and Hashirama near death. Restored and empowered by the Sage of Six Paths, they enter the battle when Momoshiki overwhelms Uzumaki Gamu 102 104.
Madara’s Limbo and Susanoo contribute to the trio’s coordinated counterattack. When Momoshiki sends Urashiki toward Konoha as a living bomb, Madara helps avert the disaster and delivers the finishing blow to Urashiki. Momoshiki escapes while the defenders prioritize saving the village 104 105.
Retirement and Otherworld Travel
With the village and clan secure, Madara announces his intention to resign as Hokage and undertake otherworld missions. He rejects Izuna as a successor because Izuna plans to retire to Rōran, then nominates Tobirama instead 107 108.
After Tobirama’s formal inauguration as Second Hokage, Madara departs for the Attack on Titan world. He parts amicably with Hashirama and reveals the aging-related benefit of his contract with Yama 111.
Alternate-World Counterpart
The story also depicts a separate Madara in another Naruto world. Uzumaki Gamu briefly observes this counterpart fighting Hashirama at the Valley of the End with Susanoo wrapped around the Nine-Tails 83.
Momoshiki later enters that world and finds Madara elderly, considering him a possible tool against Uzumaki Gamu. These events concern the alternate counterpart, not Konoha’s joint First Hokage in Uzumaki Gamu’s home world 108.
