Inside a quiet, bare-bones house.

Yechen shook his head and slowly stirred awake, still groggy. He looked around, utterly bewildered.

Where am I...?

The moment that thought crossed his mind, a flood of fragmented memories surged up.

This is Konoha? I actually transmigrated into the Shinobi World...?

Full of questions, he quickly sorted through the memories surfacing in his mind. One familiar scene after another gradually helped him understand his situation.

There was no doubt about it. He had transmigrated.

And he had landed in the body of a Konoha Uchiha clan member. This Uchiha Ye Chen, who shared his name, was only nine years old and currently in his fourth year at the Ninja Academy.

The main reason he had been able to take over this body was that its original owner had suddenly received news of his parents' deaths after school yesterday.

Unable to bear the blow, the boy had been overcome with grief. Alone in the dark, with no one checking on him, he had simply kicked the bucket!

Then Yechen had transmigrated here, taken over the body, and become its new owner.

None of that mattered!

What mattered was that this was the Shinobi World, where the death rate was sky-high, and a shinobi war was raging. According to his memories, the Third Shinobi World War was currently underway.

The original owner's parents had died on the battlefield.

One phrase summed up this era: lives were worth less than grass. It wasn't just ordinary people at the bottom-even high-ranking shinobi couldn't live in peace amid this chaos.

With no one to rely on in a situation like this, Yechen felt completely insecure, even here in Konoha, the strongest village.

Worse still, he was a member of the Uchiha Clan. After the Shinobi World War, the clan's massacre still awaited him. When it rained, it poured. This starting point couldn't have been worse!

"Sigh... I helped an old lady cross the road and got nothing good in return. Fine, whatever. But after getting hit by a car and dying, I still had to end up here? Isn't this just making me suffer all over again?

System, are you there?

Open sesame, little chick pecks the loach..."

???...

"Where's the cheat every transmigrator is supposed to get? I've already said all the secret phrases. Why aren't you showing up?"

"Do good people really get nothing in return? Sigh..."

Yechen was speechless. Never mind not having a cheat—he had just checked, and even after such a devastating trauma, his Sharingan still hadn't awakened. How useless was this body?

How am I supposed to keep going like this?

He did have chakra, but pitifully little. By his estimate, he probably didn't even have what it took to become a Genin. He had no idea how this boy had trained. A fourth-year student, and this was all he had to show for it? Just how awful was his aptitude?

And he called himself an Uchiha! Pah!

In the Shinobi World, bloodlines mattered enormously. A lack of chakra could still be remedied through later effort, but bloodlines were something you were born with. The closer one's bloodline was to Otsutsuki Kaguya's, the greater one's potential.

Otherwise, no matter how much chakra you had or how strong your Taijutsu was, it wouldn't do much good. At best, you would be like Might Guy-a brief flash of brilliance.

Yechen had no intention of saving the world, but surely he ought to accomplish something in his lifetime!

Otherwise, wouldn't this whole trip have been a waste?

He had a very clear understanding of himself. Perhaps he had a little ability, but only a little. He was probably just slightly stronger than those first- and second-year students. How was he supposed to survive in the future? If he went to the battlefield, how would that be any different from marching to his death?

"You sent me here without giving me any perks, and you even put me in a useless body. What am I supposed to do now?"

With a sigh, Yechen flopped onto the bed, helplessness written across his face as he lamented the twists of fate.

Then he reconsidered. Since he was already in this world, he ought to at least make an effort.

For the next ten days, Yechen attended school during the day and trained at night, yet his strength didn't improve at all. Only then did he realize that no matter how he trained, he would never accomplish much in this lifetime.

Time ticked by. Half a month later, Yechen heard some news: his class would be graduating early, in just one month, so they could be sent into combat as soon as possible.

The front lines were under heavy pressure and needed fresh blood.

The news struck Yechen like a bolt of lightning. He hadn't even been here a month, and already he would have to go to war? He wasn't ready yet!

"What do I do? Won't I be dead in a month?"

In terms of strength, he was at the bottom of his class.

Under normal circumstances, he might not have been allowed to graduate. But these were exceptional times, and he was a member of the Uchiha Clan. Konoha High Command would love nothing more than to see every last Uchiha dead.

So no matter how useless Yechen was, he was destined for the battlefield. There was no escaping it.

After thinking long and hard, Yechen still couldn't come up with a good solution. In the end, all he could do was sigh helplessly.

Perhaps this was simply his fate!

Just as he was feeling helpless, a notification sounded in his mind.

Activating Infinite Evolution System...

Yechen frowned, thinking he was hearing things. If he really had a system, wouldn't it have shown up long ago, instead of leaving him here sighing in despair?

Infinite Evolution System activated. One starter gift pack awarded.

"I... I really do have a cheat..."

Yechen shot upright. The gloom in his mind vanished instantly, replaced by delighted surprise.

He had always been an optimist who never gave up easily. It was only because he couldn't see any way out of his earlier predicament that he had begun to lose heart.

But now that the system had activated, he had hope. Although he didn't know what the Infinite Evolution System could do, he wouldn't give up as long as there was even a sliver of a chance.

Immediately afterward, a translucent pale-blue panel appeared before his eyes.

Character panel: Host: Uchiha Ye Chen Combat power: 0.7 Strength: 1 Constitution: 2 Spirit: 4 Energy: 40 Bloodline: Sharingan (inactive), Byakugan (inactive) Talent: None Skill: Three Body Technique (level 1) Evolution points: 0

After reading the status panel, Yechen felt awful.

His combat power was 0.7. According to the system's scale, a combat power of 1-10 placed someone at the Genin level. His overall combat power was only 0.7, leaving him 0.3 short of becoming a Genin. That 0.3 was nothing to scoff at-the closer one got to a breakthrough, the harder it became to improve.

Of course, if someone possessed special methods or abilities that let them push their combat power past the threshold in a burst, that also counted as surpassing their current level.

For example, if a Genin had a combat power of 9, but could unleash a ninjutsu that pushed it beyond 10, who would still treat him as a Genin?

The combat power shown on the panel was an overall value used to measure a person's strength.

That was exactly what depressed Yechen. After working hard for so long, he still couldn't even reach the Genin level. He really was useless.

He might even be worse than Naruto at this age.
