Water Hashira status explicitly confirmed 110 Identified through his Water Hashira’s Nichirin Blade. The supplied passages do not depict his promotion.

Background / History

Giyu is Tsutako Tomioka’s younger brother and Yaha Tomioka’s older brother. During a snowy-night demon attack, Tsutako shields both boys and suffers a pierced shoulder, while a collapsing roof traps Yaha. Giyu is too terrified to reach for the family’s hatchet. Yaha’s awakened power defeats the demon, and Tsutako survives her injuries 1 2.

Giyu subsequently trains under Sakonji Urokodaki on Mount Sagiri. By Final Selection, he has completed two years of training and more than a hundred sparring bouts with Sabito. His frustration at being weaker than Sabito drives him to train past exhaustion, even after the skin between his thumb and forefinger splits open 4 8.

Yaha redirects his attention toward his own breathing talent: slow, deep breaths with a steadier foundation than Sabito’s short, explosive bursts. Giyu begins experimenting with that rhythm, which later helps him overcome the fear left by the attack on his family 4 9.

Appearance

  • Build and hair: Described as thin during his training; later has half-tied hair reaching his shoulders 4 110.
  • Expression: Usually expressionless, earning Yaha’s “stone-faced” and “poker face” nicknames 15 29.
  • Clothing: Wears the black Demon Slayer Corps uniform with the white character meaning “destroy” on its back, along with a haori 15 134.
  • Rare smile: Shows an almost imperceptible smile after Yaha tells him not to die during the rift attack 110.

Personality

Giyu is quiet and emotionally restrained, but his reserve does not mean indifference. He struggles to voice concern before Yaha departs on missions, becomes visibly emotional while reading Tsutako’s letter, and spends an entire day outside Yaha’s hospital ward after the final battle 6 15 139.

His early self-doubt centers on his perceived lack of talent. He compares himself unfavorably with Sabito and Yaha, compensating through punishing practice. The family attack also leaves him vulnerable to freezing in front of demons, despite his training; remembering Yaha’s encouragement allows him to act during Final Selection 4 8 9.

His defining loyalty is practical and stubborn. He blocks access to Yaha’s sickroom while badly wounded, offers his own sword when he notices Yaha’s damaged hand, and repeatedly shields Muichiro despite injuries that make further fighting nearly impossible 51 110 121 122.

Abilities & Skills

Water Breathing

  • Natural foundation: His breathing is unusually slow and deep, with intervals almost two seconds longer than Sabito’s during their early training. Yaha considers its steadiness a talent Sabito cannot easily reproduce 4.
  • Final Selection breakthrough: Briefly enters a state in which surrounding distractions recede, his field of vision expands, and he can perceive the demons’ muscle movements. Inhalation gathers strength and exhalation delivers the cut without a wasted interval 9.
  • Fourth Form: Striking Tide: Uses the form to deflect Akaza’s fist while protecting Muichiro 121.
  • Continued development: His breathing becomes longer and more sustained through further practice on Mount Sagiri 35.

Eleventh Form: Dead Calm

  • Function: Uses guiding sword movements to receive and neutralize physical attacks within the defensive space before his blade 113 121.
  • Against other swordsmen: Dissipates Sanemi’s Wind Breathing pressure while Giyu guards Yaha’s hospital room, though the impact still pushes him backward 51.
  • Against Akaza: Holds against a prolonged barrage before accumulated vibrations, an inhalation gap, and displacement of his wrist compromise the sword’s alignment 121.
  • Against Muzan: Severs barbed whips aimed at Yaha, helping buy time for Malevolent Shrine 135.
  • Limits: Requires sufficient strength, breathing reserves, and precise blade control. Severe exhaustion prevents its use against Rui; Akaza and Muzan both overpower it 25 113 121 134.

Endurance and Protective Swordsmanship

  • Fighting under injury: Continues defending Yaha’s doorway after clashes reopen his bandaged wounds 51.
  • Emergency interception: Crosses roughly thirty meters in one second to protect Muichiro despite at least four broken chest bones 121.
  • Holding position: Stands between Muichiro and Akaza even when he believes he can no longer block another attack 122.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Wooden sword — Used for practice and sparring on Mount Sagiri 3 4 5.
  • Blue Nichirin Blade — Turns vivid blue when he draws it after delivery by Hotaru Haganezuka. It later suffers chipping during the Mount Natagumo battle 15 25.
  • Haori — Gives his bloodstained haori to Yaha to cover his injured right hand and shoulder before confronting Muzan 134.
  • Tsutako’s letter and cloth pouch — Receives a letter and a handmade amulet pouch from his older sister during training 6.

Relationships

  • Yaha Tomioka — Younger brother, rescuer, and source of guidance. Giyu briefly fears that Yaha’s growing brutality means he is no longer the same person, but Yaha reassures him that his protection will never change. Giyu later defends him against accusations of being a monster 4 29 51.
  • Tsutako Tomioka — Older sister who shields him during the family attack. Her later letter moves him to tears 1 6.
  • Sakonji Urokodaki — Master responsible for his training on Mount Sagiri and supervision of his sparring 3 5 8.
  • Sabito — Fellow disciple and frequent sparring partner. Giyu measures himself against Sabito’s talent; in one three-round test, Sabito wins twice and Giyu once 4 5 8.
  • Muichiro Tokito — Ally in the Infinity Castle battle against Akaza. Giyu repeatedly protects him and praises his successful spatial strike with “Well done” 121 122.
  • Sanemi Shinazugawa — Clashes with Giyu over Yaha’s humanity. Sanemi attacks him at the Butterfly Mansion and later dismisses his defense of Yaha’s judgment 51 100.
  • Obanai Iguro — Joins Sanemi’s attempt to reach Yaha’s sickroom, attacking Giyu’s injured ribs. Giyu remains ready to intervene when Obanai challenges Yaha again 51 69.

Story Role / Major Arcs

Final Selection

  • Enters Mount Fujikasane’s eastern woods alone and is surrounded by three demons. Memories of the family attack overwhelm him, causing him to drop his sword 8.
  • Recalls Yaha’s words, retrieves the blade, and decapitates all three attackers in a temporary heightened breathing state 9.
  • Continues deeper into the mountain to find Yaha, now accepting that his younger brother may have been right about his strength 9.

Mount Natagumo

  • Spends hours severing threads controlling lower-ranking swordsmen and covering their retreat. Rui ambushes him after his strength is depleted, inflicting numerous wounds deep enough to expose bone 25.
  • Yaha intercepts Rui’s killing attack and destroys the demon. Giyu recognizes his brother’s power as something beyond Breathing Styles—closer to a natural disaster 25 28.
  • Yaha restores his wounds, broken ribs, lost blood, and exhausted muscles in three seconds with Reverse Cursed Technique 29.

Defense of Yaha

  • Guards Yaha’s intensive-care room against Sanemi and Obanai, declaring that they must step over his corpse to kill his brother. Kagaya Ubuyashiki stops the fight 51.
  • Defends Yaha’s precision after the Entertainment District mission’s zero-casualty report and later attempts to support the reliability of his warning about Muzan 67 100.
  • Notices Yaha’s damaged hand before the Infinity Castle assault and offers his own sword. Yaha refuses but quietly tells him not to die 107 110.

Infinity Castle and Final Battle

  • Fights alongside Muichiro against a soulless, Muzan-controlled Akaza. Dead Calm eventually breaks under the barrage, leaving Giyu with severe chest injuries 113 121.
  • Protects Muichiro before and after the boy erases Akaza’s arm with a fragment of Yaha’s power. The strike disrupts Muzan’s control, allowing Akaza’s memories to return 121 122.
  • Watches Hakuji destroy his demon core, then leaves with Muichiro toward the ascending passage 127.
  • Attacks Muzan alongside Rengoku and is thrown back. He later uses Dead Calm to help buy the thirty seconds Yaha needs to summon Malevolent Shrine 134 135.
  • Helps the other slayers escape the collapsing castle. Afterward, he keeps vigil outside Yaha’s ward and is present when Shinobu announces that Yaha has awakened 138 139.
