Chapter 18
After reassuring his family, the big white bear of a man came over to Lin Yi on his own initiative, bringing his two large backpacks with him.
Seeing him come over of his own accord, Lin Yi couldn't help smiling.
The convoy needed people who took the initiative like this. It would make things much easier for Liu Chuan as captain.
"Thanks for stepping in earlier."
Lin Yi rose with a smile and offered him a cigarette. "If you hadn't stepped in back then, I probably wouldn't have made it out of Guangming Town either."
"Don't mention it. I don't smoke. My daughter doesn't like the smell on me, so I quit a long time ago."
The man smiled and nodded, then introduced himself. "I'm Ji Qingcang, a military veteran. These days, I mostly look after my family. My wife is more capable than I am, so she's the breadwinner."
When they heard he was a veteran, both Lin Yi's and Liu Chuan's eyes lit up.
After all, they knew far too little. A veteran was bound to have contacts of his own.
Perhaps he knew things they didn't.
"Lin Yi!"
"Liu Chuan!"
Lin Yi and Liu Chuan introduced themselves as well.
There was no need for all that beating around the bush between men. Besides, the current situation didn't give them the luxury of overthinking things.
Staying alive was everyone's top priority.
"I understand all the rules we agreed on earlier. I'm an awakened of the [Beastman · Bear] sequence. I gathered quite a lot of food this time, mainly for my family's sake."
As he spoke, he set his two large backpacks down between them, making no attempt to hold anything back.
Looking at the man before him, Lin Yi couldn't help smiling. "Brother Ji, you're so open about this that you're putting us to shame."
With that, he got up, went to the vehicle outside, and brought out all the supplies he had gathered.
Quite a few people cast envious and jealous looks at the oversized black canvas bag Lin Yi carried inside.
But everyone knew Lin Yi had risked his life to get those supplies.
Even if they wanted them, they would have to ask themselves whether they had what it took.
After all, Lin Yi had killed someone in their convoy. He was truly ruthless, more dangerous than those tattooed street thugs.
"Captain Liu leads the convoy. He's mainly responsible for the big picture and sensing danger, so he doesn't gather supplies himself. But he has to get a share of whatever we collect. You understand that, right, Brother Ji?"
Lin Yi was a straightforward man. Since Ji Qingcang was now part of their team, some things needed to be made clear.
Liu Chuan was indispensable to this convoy.
In fact, he was a notch more important than anyone else.
"I understand. The [Watcher] sequence, right? A convoy can do without the other sequences, but it has to have someone of the [Watcher] sequence. That's a basic, essential requirement."
Ji Qingcang continued slowly, "When the apocalypse arrived, I contacted some of my buddies in the military. They shared quite a bit of information with me."
Hearing that, Lin Yi and Liu Chuan exchanged a glance, both looking like eager children.
Ji Qingcang held nothing back and told them everything he knew.
In fact, the migration plan had been drawn up long ago, and sequence transcendents had already appeared within the government. Outsiders knew nothing about this.
With the government's help, the first person of the [Watcher] sequence had also managed to uncover some information.
When the projection of another world began merging with theirs, the government had responded immediately.
The north was the safest place for the time being, and preparations were in full swing at fortresses and settlements everywhere.
On the first day of the apocalypse, the government's [Watcher] had advanced, becoming a [Prophet], a higher tier of that sequence!
Through this opportunity, the government had learned even more secrets.
Sequences, anomalies, anomalous objects, advancement methods, and so on...
The moment the migration plan began, the [Watcher] sequence was assigned the highest priority.
After becoming a Prophet, one could contact other Prophets, making them the perfect means of communicating with other convoys.
Ji Qingcang had awakened his sequence long ago, but he had never told anyone.
He had been waiting for someone of the [Watcher] sequence to appear.
Back in Zhenning County, he had encountered quite a few convoys.
But those convoys either had no one of the [Watcher] sequence, or, if they did, they failed to value them and treated them as nothing more than radar.
He knew very well how high a priority this sequence deserved.
Someone of the [Watcher] sequence had to be the convoy captain. There was no question about it.
If they lacked combat power, then they had to shoulder the captain's responsibilities.
Unfortunately, far too many people didn't know that.
The formation of the Survival Rules Convoy, however, had given Ji Qingcang a glimmer of hope.
Lin Yi was ruthless, but he knew his own strengths and limitations. Instead of seizing the captain's position, he supported Liu Chuan as captain.
That alone told Ji Qingcang that the convoy he had been waiting for had finally appeared.
Hearing all this, Liu Chuan felt the pressure on his shoulders grow even heavier.
After spending half his life as a workhorse, he had suddenly become the boss, and now he felt somewhat at a loss.
Lin Yi patted his shoulder and smiled. "Captain Liu, Ji and I are putting our lives in your hands. You'll have to steer our Survival Rules Convoy down the right path."
"Don't worry. I'll give it everything I've got!"
Liu Chuan nodded earnestly.
Ji Qingcang looked at the two of them, then turned his gaze to Lin Yi. "I still don't know what sequence you belong to."
Now that they were all in the same boat, there was no need to hide certain things.
Lin Yi was equally open and answered with a smile. "I'm of the [Criminal] sequence. My ability enhances my physique. You should have seen it already, Brother Ji."
"Let's hope we can make it to the settlements in the north."
Ji Qingcang nodded with a smile. "Let's divide the supplies first. I'm not picky about the food. It's mainly medicine I need to set aside for my family."
"No problem!"
Lin Yi opened his canvas bag. Apart from snacks, drinks, instant noodles, and the like, medicine made up the largest portion.
In Guangming Town, Ji Qingcang had prioritized food.
He had mainly been thinking of his family.
By the time he wanted to look for medicine, he had realized there wasn't enough time left. Nor would he rob anyone else.
So he could only pin his hopes on Lin Yi.
And Lin Yi hadn't disappointed him.
"Let's pool everything and split it into three shares. Any objections, Brother Ji?" Lin Yi asked with a smile.
He had to take Liu Chuan's circumstances into account. After all, Captain Liu was the most important person in the entire convoy.
"No problem. The captain comes first!"
Ji Qingcang laughed. "But you'll have to let me have some of your lollipops. My daughter loves them, and as her dad, I need to stock up for her."
Just as Lin Yi was about to nod, a woman came up from behind, staring avidly at their supplies.
"You can't keep all the supplies to yourselves. We're all part of the same convoy. You have to share them, and vulnerable women like us should get priority..."
