Chapter 23
Lin Yi was deeply shocked by what Ji Qingcang had said.
The [Watcher] Sequence required peeping into other people's lives on a regular basis. Didn't that just make you a voyeuristic pervert?
And the [Criminal] Sequence actually required committing crimes to advance?
For some reason, Lin Yi felt that this absurd method of advancement might be worth trying.
If that really worked, how strong would I become after advancing?
Wait!
Why should I try committing crimes?
What if, instead of strengthening my body, I used the [Enhancement] Sequence to directly [Enhance] my second Sequence, [Criminal]?
At that thought, Lin Yi couldn't wait to give it a try.
While focusing his mind on the [Criminal] Sequence, he activated [Enhancement].
But this time, there was no response whatsoever.
There wasn't even the slightest sign of anything happening, as though [Enhancement] had run into some sort of obstacle.
So I couldn't enhance a Sequence directly?
Did that mean the only ways to advance a Sequence were the three methods Ji Qingcang had mentioned?
It was a little ridiculous, but there didn't seem to be any other choice.
After all, the first [Watcher] Sequence Transcendent to emerge had already succeeded. Perhaps they could have Liu Chuan try it first.
"Captain Liu, you'd better get serious about peeping from now on."
Lin Yi patted his shoulder and said with complete seriousness, "Don't worry. We'll keep your secret."
"Um... if possible, try not to peep on my family. There's no need."
Ji Qingcang gave an awkward smile. After all, he was the one who had suggested this method, based on information a former comrade had shared with him.
He supported Liu Chuan going around peeping, but he would rather not be the target himself.
"Ahem... I'll... do my best to give it a try."
Liu Chuan had looked resolute earlier, but now that he knew what the method involved, he began to hesitate.
I was an upright man! Did I really have to become a voyeuristic pervert from now on?
He couldn't let anyone else find out about this, or the word "pervert" would really become inseparable from his name.
After sensing the area within five kilometers and confirming that no Aberrations were approaching, Liu Chuan arranged for everyone to rest here for the night.
The three Sequence Transcendents would take turns keeping watch to ensure everyone could rest well and wouldn't be too tired when they hit the road tomorrow.
There were only 172 people now, so keeping watch wasn't all that demanding.
Most importantly, Liu Chuan wanted to try the method Ji Qingcang had mentioned.
He even volunteered for the last watch.
Clearly, he didn't want Lin Yi and Ji Qingcang to discover what he was secretly planning.
Ji Qingcang took the first watch. He still had his wife and child to look after, so the sooner he finished, the sooner he could sleep beside his family.
Naturally, Lin Yi took the midnight shift.
Fortunately, there were no major problems that night, and Liu Chuan remained vigilant throughout the final watch.
The Tier Three Aberration, Rain Man, didn't seem to have followed them again. This was one of the rare nights when everyone managed to get a good rest.
Early the next morning, Liu Chuan washed up bright and early, then headed toward his car with a guilty look on his face.
Wang Gui was already awake, ready to drive whenever needed.
He was now Liu Chuan's dedicated driver. All he had to do was drive properly.
He would receive his share of the supplies when the time came. For an honest, straightforward man like Wang Gui, the job couldn't have been simpler.
"Ahem..."
An amplified sound boomed through the service area.
It startled quite a few people out of a sound sleep, and they looked around in terror.
"What happened? I think I just saw my great-grandma! What the hell was that?"
"No idea. Maybe an Aberration showed up?"
"Probably not. That sounded like someone coughing, just way too loud."
"Scared me to death! I thought an Aberration had appeared nearby."
"..."
Once the people who had woken up realized it wasn't an Aberration, they all let out long sighs of relief.
But a moment later, the booming voice rang out again. "Everyone, get up! It's seven thirty. The convoy will leave in half an hour, at eight sharp. We won't be stopping to search for supplies today. We need to drive all the way to Cloudpan City. Try to team up with other people so no one ends up driving while exhausted!"
They had gathered a batch of supplies yesterday, so there was no need to risk collecting more today.
For now, everyone would drive as far toward the North as possible.
There was no telling how long the rain overhead would last, so they could only grit their teeth and keep driving, getting away from the rain-soaked cities first.
Hearing that, everyone in the convoy immediately got up and packed their belongings. After a quick bite and something to drink, they found people to team up with.
Teaming up did have its advantages.
At the very least, they could siphon the gas out of one car to keep in reserve and pool their supplies.
Whether their teammates could be trusted was another matter entirely.
They only had half an hour anyway. Those who could band together did so, with three or four people per car, or six or seven squeezed into a Wuling Hongguang.
The number of vehicles in the convoy immediately dropped, making it look more streamlined.
In the lead car, Wang Gui couldn't help raising an eyebrow as he watched his captain holding the megaphone and constantly sneaking glances behind them through the rearview mirror.
He had been paying attention the whole time. His captain seemed to have some strange fetish-he had suddenly started peeping on people.
From last night until now, his eyes had never left the other members of the convoy.
Liu Chuan looked like such a refined, educated man. How could he have a habit like that behind closed doors?
People from big cities really were different, huh.
"Wang, keep an eye on the time. Once we leave, we'll head straight onto the highway. Keep our speed around a hundred kilometers an hour, and don't go over a hundred and twenty. It's not safe in the rain."
Still peeping through the rearview mirror, Liu Chuan said quietly, "And don't look down on my little car. Once we find a Land Rover or a Hummer, we'll trade up to something much better!"
"Yes, Captain Liu."
Wang Gui looked away and gripped the steering wheel with both hands, looking ready to pull out at any moment.
Once everyone was in their vehicles, Lin Yi looked at the rain outside, which showed no sign of changing, and couldn't help feeling worried.
If the weather kept up like this, who knew when it would ever end?
The rain showed absolutely no sign of stopping. Natural disasters such as mudslides were probably going to hit the mountain regions.
Leaving early would also help them avoid those natural disasters.
This rain had come far too suddenly. For humanity in its current state, it was definitely bad news.
"Move out!"
As Liu Chuan's voice rang out through the Spectral Amplifying Megaphone, the Survival Rules Convoy began its migration toward the North...
