"What? My son Xiao Yan has the potential to become a Dou Di?!" In the Xiao Clan's main hall, Xiao Zhan slapped his chair and sprang to his feet, his legs trembling with excitement.
The elders were equally dumbstruck. They exchanged glances, unable to utter a word for a long while. The claim was simply too astounding.
A Dou Di-wasn't that a realm found only in legends?
Xiao Yan stood behind Hun Tiandi with a calm expression, but inwardly, his pride was tinged with embarrassment. The praise Hun Tiandi had heaped on him was far too extravagant.
After Xiao Yan became a Soul Hall Protector, Hun Tiandi decided to take him out to see the world. Naturally, before setting off on a long journey, he had to let his family know.
After all, when he had left home, he had only said he would be away for a little over a month. If he failed to return by then, Xiao Zhan might well think something had happened to him.
With Hun Tiandi's help, the vast distance between Jia Ma Sacred City and Wutan City was crossed in the blink of an eye. Yet even that fleeting journey had encountered a few complications.
When the spatial passage opened above Wutan City, Xiao Yan was startled to discover that an enormous barrier had appeared over the city at some point. Thinking of the Gu Clan Half-Saint who had ambushed him earlier, his unease reached its peak.
Fortunately, a barrier of that caliber was as good as nonexistent before Hun Tiandi. Even Hun Miesheng could crush it with a wave of his hand.
The barrier seemed to serve only one purpose: preventing anyone from opening a spatial passage directly into Wutan City.
"A little trick of the Gu Clan's," Hun Miesheng remarked disdainfully.
Much to Xiao Yan's surprise, Hun Tiandi began chatting with Xiao Zhan after meeting him. This astonished Xiao Yan, while Xiao Zhan became deeply apprehensive once he learned who Hun Tiandi was.
A Nine-Star Dou Sheng could actually sit down and converse calmly with a mere Da Dou Shi?!
To Xiao Zhan, that was utterly inconceivable. Thanks to Xiao Yan's grandfather, Xiao Lin, having been a Dou Ling, he had encountered quite a few experts since childhood. Those Dou Ling experts had all looked down their noses at others, while the Dou Wang experts had each considered themselves lords of their own domains. Few would even speak civilly with someone of their own realm, let alone someone whose strength was as far beneath theirs as earth was beneath heaven.
No wonder someone like him is a supreme expert in the same realm as Clan Chief Gu Yuan. Both treat those beneath them with courtesy, without looking down on a mere Da Dou Shi like me. Unfortunately, the ties between our Xiao Clan and the Gu Clan have run their course, and we have an old blood feud with the Hun Clan. If they only took Xiao Yan as a disciple for the Tou She Ancient God Jade, then discover I already gave it to the Gu Clan, will their humiliation turn to rage...? Though Xiao Zhan looked immensely excited, he still retained some measure of reason.
Every successive chief of the Xiao Clan knew of the clan's former glory and the existence of the Ancient Families. Most, however, had regarded these secrets passed down through the generations as mere stories, and the Tou She Ancient God Jade had been handed down as an ordinary family heirloom. There had even been an incident in their history when a wastrel stole the jade and sold it to a pawnshop, causing quite an uproar.
Yet all those legends seemed to have been confirmed in Xiao Zhan's generation. First, the legendary Ancient Clan Chief had sought him out and entrusted his daughter to him to be raised. Then the Hun Clan Chief had come, proposing to take his son as a disciple.
There were countless twists and turns behind all this. As a mere Da Dou Shi, Xiao Zhan could never untangle them, but he did understand one thing: what these Ancient Families wanted most was the Tou She Ancient God Jade.
With a smile on his face, Xiao Zhan suddenly began dismissing everyone in the hall.
"Everyone, leave. I want to have a proper talk with Clan Chief Hun about my son Xiao Yan!"
Though the Xiao Clan Elders were reluctant, Xiao Zhan's authority within the clan had continued to grow, and they did not dare openly disobey him. They rose and left.
Hun Tiandi needed only one glance at Xiao Zhan to know exactly what he wanted to say. With a soft chuckle, he waved his hand, and Hun Miesheng and the others turned and vanished into the void.
Hiss... What terrifying abilities. There probably isn't a single member of the Hun Clan here below the Dou Zun realm. Xiao Zhan was not strong, but he had seen enough to immediately realize that any one of the Hun Clan members who had come could destroy the entire Jia Ma Empire.
"Yan'er, you leave too," Xiao Zhan snapped when he saw that Xiao Yan showed no intention of going.
"Father, I..." Xiao Yan still wanted to stay, but seeing how resolute Xiao Zhan was, he had no choice but to leave.
"What, aren't you in a hurry to see that little girlfriend of yours? Or are you waiting for her to come to you? I suppose I'll have to make myself scarce again when she does?" Outside the hall, Xiao Yan stood with Xiao Yi Xian after being sent out. Seeing how distracted he was, she began teasing him.
"Xun'er has probably already left." Leaning against the wall, Xiao Yan stared at the tips of his shoes and murmured.
"Why? Just because you came home and she didn't immediately come to see you?" Xiao Yi Xian stepped in front of him and looked at him in surprise.
"It's just a feeling. Now that I think about it, when Xun'er gave me that Beast Flame Map, she was trying to send me away. She seemed really reluctant to have me stay home during that time." Xiao Yan recalled the scene he had seen through the Three-Life Stone in the Netherworld: Xun'er had even been willing to point her sword at him to obtain the Tou She Ancient God Jade.
Now it seemed that Xiao Xun'er had come to his home solely to obtain the Tou She Ancient God Jade.
Then what had all those days and nights together since childhood amounted to? A dream?
"There's nothing interesting about you sighing over spring and mourning autumn like this." Xiao Yi Xian shook her head, reached out with both hands, and pinched Xiao Yan's cheeks, forcing his face upward.
"Please, act a little more like a future Dou Di. She's just your first girlfriend. There's no need to go this far. At worst..." Halfway through, a faint blush suddenly spread across Xiao Yi Xian's cheeks. She abruptly released his face and turned her back on him.
"At worst, you can find someone else later."
"Senior Sister." Xiao Yan rubbed his aching cheeks and suddenly looked at Xiao Yi Xian with utmost seriousness.
"What is it?" Xiao Yi Xian turned her head. Her face seemed expressionless, but the blush on her cheeks had yet to fade.
"You've got a really strong grip."
"You're asking for death!"
While Xiao Yan and Xiao Yi Xian were tussling, Xiao Zhan and Hun Tiandi finished their conversation.
Xiao Zhan, the current chief of the Xiao Clan, once one of the Ancient Eight Clans, stood on a raised platform, gathered all his clanspeople, and announced something momentous.
"Our Xiao Clan will soon be moving to a new place. There, someone will assign us a new city as our territory!" Xiao Zhan announced to his clanspeople, his face wreathed in smiles.
A wise man knew how to bend with the times. What thousand-year feud, what hatred as deep as a sea of blood-could either matter more than the clan's continued survival?
Xiao Zhan was a pragmatist. Since the Hun Clan Chief had made the offer, he might as well take the slope offered and climb down from his donkey.
As for whether some conspiracy lurked behind it, the Xiao Clan's current strength hardly allowed them to consider such things. They could only accept it passively.
