History
Alchemical Expansion
The Jia Lie Family hired Liu Xi, a First-Rank Alchemist from outside Wutan City, at considerable expense. As the city’s only publicly known alchemist, his arrival disrupted the balance between its major families and became a source of concern for Xiao Zhan 11.
The family also purchased the Foundation Establishment Spirit Liquid formula that Xiao Yan had auctioned through the Mittel Auction House. Because the formula exceeded Liu Xi’s current capabilities, they sought a Beast Flame to help him become a Second-Rank Alchemist. Their intended return was mass production of the spirit liquid to strengthen the family 11 12.
Jia Lie Bi regarded Liu Xi’s greed, lust, and limited talent as useful weaknesses: an alchemist dependent on the family’s generous support would be easier to control and less likely to betray them 12 14.
Beast Flame Auction
To finance the purchase, Jia Lie Bi sold practically all the family’s assets outside Wutan City to the Nalan Family in the imperial capital. At the auction, he initially hesitated to challenge the unknown bidder in Heavenly Character No. 1 Private Room, recognizing that even a Dou Ling could threaten all three local families 11.
Under Liu Xi’s pressure, Jia Lie Bi bid 600,000 gold coins and secured the Divine Crow Flame. The auction expenditure amounted to nearly a quarter of the family’s wealth. He ordered his party to split up, head toward the Xiao Clan and Ao Ba Family, and regroup outside the city after a night before returning through a secret passage 11 13.
Xiao Yan deliberately allowed the purchase to succeed so that the family’s precautions would separate Liu Xi from its stronger fighters. With Yao Chen tracking the group through soul imprints, Xiao Yan waited until Liu Xi left the auction, killed him in an alley, and took his storage ring containing the flame and formula 11 12.
Defeat by the Xiao Clan
Xiao Yan left a Xiao Clan crest beside Liu Xi’s body and wrote “Aoba” in his blood. The staged scene suggested that the Ao Ba Family had killed Liu Xi, attempted to frame the Xiao Clan, and been exposed by the victim’s final message. Jia Lie Bi consequently led his forces to confront the Ao Ba Family 12 14 17.
The Xiao Clan exploited his absence with a coordinated attack. Its Third Elder raided the Jia Lie compound while Xiao Yan wore Xiao Zhan’s cloak to impersonate the clan leader. A messenger was deliberately allowed to escape and summon Jia Lie Bi home; Xiao Zhan, two elders, and more than twenty Dou Shi then ambushed him on his return route 16 17.
At the compound, Second Elder Jia Lie Deng fought the Xiao Clan’s Third Elder before charging Xiao Yan. Already wounded, he was killed by Xiao Yan’s Buddha’s Fury Fire Lotus. The explosion broke the remaining defenders’ morale, leaving fleeing survivors and a one-sided slaughter. The victorious Xiao Clan carried away substantial spoils 17 18 19.
