Background / History

The Dugu Family’s Poison Flaw

Dugu Bo’s poison endangered both himself and his family’s continuation. His granddaughter, Dugu Yan, also accumulated toxins within her body. Before meeting Ji Hongchen, he possessed a medicinal garden at the Ice and Fire Yin Yang Well but did not know how to use its valuable herbs 18 20 21.

According to Qian Renxue, Dugu Bo had previously refused Spirit Hall’s recruitment. Bibi Dong subsequently sent someone to hunt him down, though the pursuer appeared to hold back, allowing the newly promoted Titled Douluo to escape 64.

Alliance with Ji Hongchen

Dugu Yan arranged their first meeting at the Ye Family’s apothecary. Ji Hongchen presented Ning Rongrong’s sect token and claimed to be her fiancé before privately warning that Dugu Yan might not live past thirty unless her poison was addressed. Dugu Bo initially smashed a table in anger, but agreed to consider any conditions that could save her 18 20.

Ji Hongchen proposed three remedies: storing poison in a soul bone, evolving a venom-storage organ through martial soul mutation, or cultivating a Poison Dao Soul Core. Dugu Bo chose the inheritable Soul Core Method and swore on his martial soul to protect Ji Hongchen if it solved the family’s flaw. After successfully forming his core, he granted Ji Hongchen unrestricted access to the garden’s herbs and planned to teach the method to Dugu Yan 20 21.

Protecting Ji Hongchen

Dugu Bo repeatedly intervened against threats to Ji Hongchen. He and Chen Xin forced Tang Hao to abandon a pursuit, then respected Ji Hongchen’s request not to attack Xiao Wu or reveal her soul-beast identity 32 33 34.

His protection could be brutal: he killed Li Yusong, beat Flender, and forced Shrek Academy to surrender its savings as compensation. Later, he joined Chen Xin in attacking Er Ming when the soul beast charged at their group 37.

He also assisted with soul-ring hunts. After Ji Hongchen advised that Dugu Yan’s future rings should come from venomous snakes, Dugu Bo captured a twelve-thousand-year Emerald Snake King for her 44.

Becoming Holy Dragon Douluo

When Liu Erlong, Yu Xiaogang, and Flender blocked Ji Hongchen’s departure, Dugu Bo answered his call for help. He poisoned their Golden Sacred Dragon fusion and swallowed Luo Sanpao with his Jade Phosphorous Serpent Emperor. Yu Xiaogang lost three levels of soul power and suffered a drastic alteration to his martial soul 63.

The devouring unexpectedly transformed Dugu Bo himself. His martial soul and soul rings exploded before rebuilding around the Radiant Sacred Dragon bloodline. Although alarmed by the loss of his poison cultivation, he discovered that his new soul skills and individual combat strength were greater than before 63 64.

He accepted Ji Hongchen’s proposed title, Holy Dragon Douluo, and intended to have it certified by Spirit Hall. With his serpent martial soul gone, Dugu Yan’s martial soul evolved into the Jade Phosphor Serpent Emperor, leaving her responsible for continuing that family lineage 64.

Battle at Heaven Dou Prison

Dugu Bo intercepted Tang Hao during the latter’s attempt to rescue Tang San from Heaven Dou Prison. Eager to test his evolved martial soul, he overpowered Tang Hao with dragon techniques and struck him with Dragon King Annihilation as he fled. The attack tore out two soul bones, which Dugu Bo handed to Ji Hongchen after securing a promise that at least one would go to Dugu Yan 81.

Tang Hao’s soul power subsequently fell to level 80. News of the defeat made Yue Guan and Gui Mei reluctant to confront Dugu Bo or proceed with assassinating Ji Hongchen. Dugu Bo later brought the two Douluo to meet his grandson-in-law 86.

Appearance

At his first meeting with Ji Hongchen, Dugu Bo appears as a green-haired, middle-aged man with an imposing presence 20.

  • Eyes: Green, with an eerie, inky hue 20.
  • After martial soul mutation: Golden dragon wings emerge behind him, and his former poison aura is replaced by golden light 63.
  • Martial Soul Possession: Golden dragon scales cover his arms and, in battle, his skin 64 81.

Personality

Dugu Bo is fiercely protective of Dugu Yan. Her threatened lifespan drives him from anger to immediate willingness to bargain, while her attraction to Ji Hongchen prompts persistent matchmaking. He encourages her to spend time with Ji Hongchen, arranges for her to stay at his home, and later openly asks for a great-grandson 20 25 39 81.

He is sharp-tongued, proud, and ruthless toward opponents. He mocks Tang Hao’s ninth soul ring, humiliates Yu Xiaogang, and refuses to let Flender’s invocation of the Blue Lightning Tyrant Dragon Sect deter him 33 37 63.

Despite this, he shows gratitude and restraint toward allies. He rewards Ji Hongchen with access to his medicinal garden and refuses to claim the poison-attributed external soul bone found on the Man Faced Demon Spider, even though it suits him 21 45.

Abilities & Skills

Soul Core Cultivation

The Soul Core Method gives Dugu Bo a way to absorb accumulated toxins into a core in his dantian rather than suffer their backlash 21.

  • Stores poison for offensive use and strengthens his toxins 21.
  • Can be passed down to address the Dugu Family’s inherited flaw 21.
  • His Poison Soul Core becomes a Radiant Soul Core after his martial soul mutation 64.

Jade Phosphorous Serpent Emperor — Former Martial Soul

Dugu Bo’s original martial soul manifests as an enormous venomous serpent phantom. Its poison and devouring abilities overwhelm the Golden Sacred Dragon fusion 63.

  • Fourth Soul Skill — Jade Phosphorous Miasma: Releases poisonous gas that envelops and weakens the fusion dragon 63.
  • Sixth Soul Skill — Jade Phosphorous Devouring the Heavens: Enlarges the serpent phantom and releases poisonous light before swallowing Luo Sanpao 63.
  • Limitation: His original poison cultivation disappears entirely after the Radiant Sacred Dragon mutation 63.

Radiant Sacred Dragon — Current Martial Soul

His evolved martial soul replaces poison with light and substantially improves his strength against individual opponents. Ji Hongchen notes that it still falls short of a true Radiant Sacred Dragon because it evolved from the serpent martial soul 64.

  • Holy Light Dragon Wings: Enable flight and accompany his light-based battle form 81.
  • Martial Soul Possession: Covers him in golden dragon scales 64 81.
  • Fifth Soul Skill — True Dragon Might: Transforms him into a Light Giant Dragon capable of high-speed lunges and claw attacks 81.
  • Ninth Soul Skill — Dragon King Annihilation: Fires a dragon-might energy wave powerful enough to pierce Tang Hao’s body and dislodge two soul bones 81.
  • Re-formed soul rings: Two yellow, two purple, and five black 63.
  • Trade-off: Loses his former poison-based strategic value while gaining much greater single-opponent combat strength 64.

Combat Limitations

  • Underestimates the thousand-year Golden-Haired Lion Mastiff and is knocked dozens of meters away by its attack. He subsequently judges its strength comparable to an ordinary Titled Douluo’s 22.
  • Needs time to adjust to his newly re-formed soul rings after the dragon mutation 64.

Equipment / Items

  • Head Soul Bone: Already possessed before Ji Hongchen proposed storing poison in a suitable soul bone. Dugu Bo hesitated because that remedy would require regularly releasing the stored toxins 20.
  • Medicinal Garden: Located in a secluded valley deep within Sunset Forest around the Ice and Fire Yin Yang Well; contains immortal herbs and abundant soul power 21.
  • Snow-Colored Swan Pills: Receives three from Ji Hongchen and uses one to advance to rank 94 27.
  • Aromatic Silk Beauty: Given to him to dispel toxins and prevent poison from leaking during pill absorption 27.
  • Tang Hao’s Soul Bones: Seizes two during the prison battle and passes them to Ji Hongchen. A sixty-thousand-year left arm bone is subsequently given to Dugu Yan 81.

Relationships

  • Dugu Yan — Granddaughter and his foremost family concern. He saves her from the inherited poison flaw, supports her cultivation, and encourages her relationship with Ji Hongchen 20 21 39 44.
  • Ji Hongchen — Benefactor, protected junior, and later acknowledged grandson-in-law. Their alliance begins as an exchange of protection for the Soul Core Method 21 64 86.
  • Chen Xin — Fellow protector of Ji Hongchen; joins him against Tang Hao and Er Ming 33 37.
  • Xiao Wu — Respects Ji Hongchen’s request to spare her and keep her soul-beast identity secret 34.
  • Tang Hao — Hostile opponent whom he mocks, intercepts, and eventually gravely wounds 32 33 81.
  • Yu Xiaogang — Enemy whose Luo Sanpao supplies the bloodline responsible for Dugu Bo’s dragon mutation 63 64.
  • Yue Guan — Rival and frequent target of his mockery. Dugu Bo anticipates surpassing him after his breakthroughs and later insists on being addressed by his new title 21 27 86.
  • Yu Yuanzhen — Slight acquaintance made while Yu Tianheng pursued Dugu Yan; Dugu Bo refuses to preserve that connection at Ji Hongchen’s expense 37.
  • Bibi Dong / Spirit Hall — Previously rejected their recruitment and was pursued on Bibi Dong’s orders. He nevertheless plans to seek Spirit Hall’s certification for his new title 64.
