Background / History

Early Life and Seven Mysteries Peak

Zhang Qingshan comes from poverty and hardship. His early cultivation progresses slowly, and before reaching the eighth Qi Refining layer, he is often bullied by other disciples. Practicing the Blood Refining Art gives him physical strength far beyond ordinary cultivators of the same realm 13 18 23.

At Seven Mysteries Peak, his routine assignment is forging spiritual iron ingots. His body-refining strength lets him finish the required work in three or four days a month; previously, he worked seven or eight days to earn additional Spirit Stones for cultivation supplies 27.

He initially befriends Ye Han partly because he believes the boy has the Seventh Elder’s backing and because he hopes to cultivate in Ye Han’s cave abode. Nevertheless, he never forces Ye Han to accommodate him. Their friendship becomes genuine, and Zhang Qingshan begins treating him like a younger brother 24 38.

Zhang Qingshan teaches Ye Han cultivation fundamentals, explains the need to match cultivation arts to spirit roots, and passes on his entire available Blood Refining Art manual. Studying Ye Han’s Azure Mystic Art also helps him reach the eleventh Qi Refining layer 15 23 25.

Ambush and the Black Demon Mountains

After completing a Blood-Dry Bird mission, Zhang Qingshan is ambushed while his magical power is depleted. He survives through body refining but loses an arm and returns badly injured. He suspects Zhang Sanlei, Li Zongqing, and Wang Fulai leaked his whereabouts; Wang Fulai later lets slip information that confirms their responsibility to Ye Han 45 46 50 52.

During the subsequent Claw Beast expedition, Zhang Qingshan intervenes when the Two Fiends of Qin Mountain threaten those same disciples. He later explains that all four came from the same hometown. With Ye Han’s vine technique restraining the Great Fiend, Zhang Qingshan kills him with his treasured axe 62 64 65.

Zhang Qingshan then guides Ye Han through the Claw Beasts’ labyrinthine lair. Against the Water Flood Dragon Beast, he burns his cultivation and magical power to attack from inside its belly, delivering axe strikes comparable to Foundation Establishment attacks. Ye Han saves the exhausted Zhang Qingshan with a Purple Pellet produced by the Purple Cauldron; he awakens at great perfection of Qi Refining 66 70 74 77.

Darkness Forbidden Ground and Foundation Establishment

At the Four Sects’ Immortal Ascension Assembly in the Darkness Forbidden Ground, Zhang Qingshan becomes the foremost disciple of the four sects. His Demon-Warding Pearl helps him survive several deadly dangers. When Ye Han later faces a mission there, Zhang Qingshan gives him the pearl and warns him to beware of those around him 176 182 213.

His service earns him spirit medicine that restores his missing arm. However, his first Foundation Establishment attempt fails. Rather than let him rely uncritically on another sect pill, Ye Han offers him a Bronze Map that may lead to a different advancement opportunity 288.

Burial Ground of the Immortals

After successfully reaching Foundation Establishment, Zhang Qingshan encounters the Blood Daoist murdering cultivators for treasure. The ensuing pursuit forces him into the Burial Ground of the Immortals 397.

There, he identifies Ye Han as the key to their escape through an auspicious omen and reveals a dangerous secret passage. His judgment is not infallible: demonic qi later distorts his mind, causing him to mistake demonized treasures for a great opportunity. Ye Han frees him with a Mind-Calming Talisman and lends him a Heart-Guarding Jade Pendant 335 356.

During their struggle against the Ice Refining Prince and his Demon Beast Puppets, Zhang Qingshan follows an auspicious aura to a sealed metal door and smashes through it. Beyond it, he obtains Millennium Rebirth Medicinal Liquid intended for the prince’s bodily restoration. Absorbing most of it advances his Blood Refining Art to the seventh layer and leaves the prince deprived of an important resource 379 394.

After returning to the sect, Zhang Qingshan teaches White Snow a Demon Race body-refining art. He later enters a lengthy healing seclusion to recover from his injuries 407 421.

Battlefield Reputation and the Boundless Sea

Zhang Qingshan’s reputation rises during the sect conflicts in Heavenly Billows. As the main commander in the Heaven-Sacrificing Mountain Range, he defeats opponents at Foundation Establishment and below, repeatedly escapes Golden Core encirclements, and reportedly nearly kills a Golden Core cultivator. Some regard him as Heavenly Billows’ strongest Foundation Establishment cultivator 796.

He eventually leaves the Azure Profound Sect with Han Yuwan to search for Ye Han, believing that remaining would place the sect in greater danger. His fortune sensing redirects their search toward an omen to the north 887 889.

After reaching Golden Core, he reunites with Ye Han and invites him to investigate an Ancient Coral Map found in an Ancient Land. They uncover a buried secret-realm entrance beneath the Boundless Sea, but Zhang Qingshan detects a death-trap reaction before using the keys. They later escape a major sea upheaval and prepare to part ways near the continent 1098 1116 1142.

Central Star Palace Temple and Ascension

Elder Liu brings Zhang Qingshan to the Star Continent, the Central Star Palace Temple, and the Star-Seizing Tower. Ye Han concludes that Zhang Qingshan is central to opening the ascension passage, while recalling Elder Liu’s warning that he must not touch the Nine Dragons Locking the Sky restrictions 1847.

Inside the temple, Zhang Qingshan’s cultivation accelerates until it surpasses Ye Han’s. He and Elder Liu rescue Ye Tianyu from pursuers, and Zhang Qingshan later guides Ye Han toward their companions through changing fortune omens 1894 1895.

To break through a spatial barrier, Zhang Qingshan burns magical power, cultivation, qi, and blood while wielding the Star Clan Long Spear. After the group emerges into an Immortal Race ambush, he briefly awakens from collapse to advise splitting into two groups. Elder Liu carries him and Teacher Lan Qing away while Ye Han flees with Ye Tianyu 1922 1923.

Pangu Island and the Three Heavens

Daoist Foyi takes Zhang Qingshan, Elder Liu, and Teacher Lan Qing to Pangu Island, the Ancient Human Race’s gathering place. While undertaking a Pangu Island mission, Zhang Qingshan is pursued by a sea demon and escapes through a seabed entrance into the Three Heavens, where he unexpectedly reunites with Ye Han 2155 2172.

His predictions guide their approach to the God-Offering Altar, where he determines that they must use separate entrances. He survives his route with stronger cultivation but severe burns and depleted life force. Ye Han treats him and places him inside the Purple Cauldron Space to recover 2179 2201 2203.

Zhang Qingshan later returns to Pangu Island when he learns that several races are besieging it. His blood oath binds him to live and die with the island. Subsequent information leads Ye Han to understand that Elder Liu regards Zhang Qingshan, rather than Ye Han, as the heir destined to revive the Ancient Human Race 2342 3065.

True Dragon Inheritance and the Eternal Myriad Realms

Despite approaching half-step True Immortal cultivation, Zhang Qingshan cannot fully free the Ancient Human Race from the foreign-race siege. He relocates the entirety of Pangu Island and escapes, but his failure to resolve the encirclement deeply troubles him 3901.

After an unsuccessful True Immortal breakthrough, he follows an auspicious sign into the True Dragon Inheritance Ground. Surviving its trials and obtaining the inheritance enables him to become a True Immortal. He subsequently obtains the Dragon Ancestor Scale and develops true dragon cultivation equivalent to a Great Luo Golden Immortal 3902 3903 3904 3905.

When White Snow asks him to help Ye Han’s wives, Zhang Qingshan prioritizes finding them over pursuing control of the True Dragon Myriad Realms. He rescues Fairy Jade Orchid from Stars Divine Beasts, then escapes with her as the Great Heavenly Dao Cycle destroys the Heavenly Void Myriad Realms 3905 3906.

After 230,000 years, he reunites with Ye Han and gives him the True Dragon Myriad Realms’ heavenly mandate. They combine their powers to unite the realms into the Eternal Myriad Realms, then depart to explore the wider heavens and earth 3906.

Appearance

Zhang Qingshan is described as tall and slender, with an honest-looking face, thick eyebrows, and large eyes. His ordinary appearance remains largely unchanged when Ye Han reunites with him much later 1894.

  • Muscular combat form: His muscles swell and his skin shines gold when he activates his body-refining techniques 62.
  • Missing and restored arm: Returns from his ambush with an empty sleeve; spirit medicine later restores the arm 45 288.
  • Post-Water Demon condition: Temporarily becomes noticeably thinner and loses much of his developed musculature after his desperate battle 73 74.
  • Later armor: Wears heavy armor covered in gold-and-silver runes during his side story 3901.

Personality

Zhang Qingshan is honest, kindhearted, and reluctant to initiate conflict. He values fellow disciples and hometown ties, sometimes helping people who have harmed him. Ye Han admires his principles but considers him too rigid and forgiving 23 47 62 65.

His kindness does not make him oblivious to danger. He recognizes the importance of powerful backers, notices suspicious rumors surrounding Ye Han, and takes extensive precautions before entering the Darkness Forbidden Ground. Ye Han eventually realizes that he is less simple and guileless than he appears 24 176 400.

He places survival above pride or cultivation level, teaching that staying alive preserves the possibility of future success. Even after losing an arm, his determination to pursue the Dao remains firm. He also emphasizes mental cultivation, restraint, and avoiding fights driven by spite 45 47 52.

Loyalty remains central to his decisions at every stage. He repeatedly helps Ye Han despite ominous predictions, returns to defend Pangu Island, and postpones his ambitions in the True Dragon Myriad Realms to help his old companions 379 2342 3905.

Abilities & Skills

Fortune and Disaster Prediction

Zhang Qingshan senses danger, favorable opportunities, and auspicious directions. He initially attributes the ability to a ray of divine light; his side story reveals that it comes from the Fortune-and-Misfortune Divine Treasure, obtained on the day he became a cultivator 335 3901.

  • Tracks changing fortune around people, routes, and locations, including auspicious signs associated with Ye Han 335 342 1894 1895.
  • Guides treasure searches and decisions such as splitting up at the ascension ambush and taking separate altar entrances 379 1923 2179.
  • Does not guarantee a safe route: it fails to immediately find shelter during his sea-demon pursuit 2155.
  • Does not prevent mental interference; demonic qi once makes him misjudge dangerous treasures 356.
  • Helps him survive countless threats, but does not eliminate the possibility of near-death encounters 3901.

Treasure-Light Detection

He can perceive treasured radiance that other cultivators generally cannot detect 182.

  • Notices a treasure glow around Ye Han and promises not to reveal it 182.
  • Recognizes treasure light within the Bronze Map offered to him 288.
  • Describes the ability as rare enough that even a Nascent Soul cultivator would find it difficult to possess 182.

Golden Spirit Art

His foundational cultivation art is metal-attributed, strengthening metal magical power 16 17.

  • Supports metal-attribute spells and the offensive and defensive use of magical artifacts 17.
  • Produces visible golden spiritual-energy specks that flow into his body during cultivation 16.

Blood Refining Art

The Blood Refining Art is Zhang Qingshan’s principal body-tempering technique. It does not originally belong to the Azure Profound Sect; the version he initially teaches Ye Han contains only its first two levels 23.

  • Develops exceptional strength and resilience, allowing continued combat after magical power runs low 22 23.
  • At the third layer, gives his body attack and defense comparable to a magic artifact 62.
  • At the sixth layer, greatly enhances his senses, especially hearing 379.
  • At the seventh layer, can rival a middle-stage Foundation Establishment cultivator without accounting for his axe 408.
  • Severe wounds and a missing arm initially limit his ability to apply its full power 63.

Golden Light Armor and Giant Forms

Zhang Qingshan surrounds himself with golden runes, armor, and shields while enlarging his body 364 372.

  • Manifests a golden general phantom behind him during powerful axe attacks 364 379.
  • Combines Golden Light Shield defense with close-range axe strikes against Demon Beast Puppets 372.
  • Later transforms into a golden figure ten thousand zhang tall while wearing his life-bound armor 1906.
  • Uses a Golden Light Giant Hand for careful excavation at the seabed secret-realm entrance 1116.

Sacrificial Combat Techniques

He can burn cultivation, magical power, vitality, and lifespan to unleash attacks beyond his normal limits 77 394 1922.

  • Kills the Water Flood Dragon Beast through powerful strikes from inside its body 77.
  • Withstands the Ice Refining Prince’s Demon Claws through his body refining and treasured axe 394.
  • Drives the Star Clan Long Spear through an ascension-related spatial barrier 1922.
  • Risks collapse and severe depletion; his altar ordeal leaves his lifespan and life force dangerously reduced 1923 2201.

Stellar Absorption and Saint Body

Inside the Star-Seizing Tower, his constitution automatically draws in spiritual energy and the power of the stars, accelerating his cultivation 1895.

  • Absorbs surrounding energy continuously, even while walking 1895.
  • His later saint body withstands violent spatial power better than Ye Han’s body at that time 1919.

Nine Dragons Divine Art

Zhang Qingshan cultivates the Nine Dragons Divine Art after refining a special dragon pearl obtained in a Star Realm 3902.

  • Its unstable power causes his first True Immortal breakthrough attempt to fail 3902.
  • His later true dragon cultivation reaches the equivalent of a Great Luo Golden Immortal 3905.
  • Uses gold-and-silver, dragon-shaped immortal qi to destroy the Stars Divine Beasts surrounding Fairy Jade Orchid 3906.

Forging and Cultivation Instruction

  • Forges spiritual iron ingots substantially faster than ordinary disciples through his physical strength 27.
  • Teaches Ye Han cultivation fundamentals, body tempering, and basic incantations and hand seals 15 22 47.
  • Gives Wang Chunyang body-tempering guidance and teaches White Snow a Demon Race body-refining art 176 407.
  • Removes much of the ownership marking from captured treasures, although residual traces remain for Ye Han to refine away 97.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Battle Axe / Heaven-Slaying Battle Axe — Exceptionally sharp weapon that defeats sinister artifacts, cuts the Water Flood Dragon Beast’s flesh, and later becomes a life-bound treasure. Its runes disrupt the Ice Refining Prince’s control of his Heavenly Demon Claws. It is named the Heaven-Slaying Battle Axe in Zhang Qingshan’s True Immortal battle 64 77 390 1112 3903.
  • Life-Bound Defensive Armor — Refined using metal materials exchanged with Ye Han. Later confirmed as his second life-bound treasure; its weight prevents him from deploying it under the Three Heavens’ thousandfold gravity 1104 1906 2177.
  • Fortune-and-Misfortune Divine Treasure — Crescent-shaped ring bearing smiling and weeping faces, with intertwined gold-and-silver light. Grants Fortune and Disaster Prediction 3901.
  • Demon-Warding Pearl — Protects against demonic energy; helps him survive the Darkness Forbidden Ground before he gives it to Ye Han 182 213.
  • Cold Iron Shield — Given to Ye Han before entering the Claw Beasts’ lair 66.
  • Bronze Map — Gift from Ye Han following his failed Foundation Establishment attempt; emits treasure light 288.
  • Ancient Coral Map and Secret Realm Keys — Used in the search for the Boundless Sea’s buried secret realm 1098 1116.

  • Metal Wings — Propel him through the Star Sea Void with powerful storms 3901.
  • Dragon Ancestor Scale — Obtained after defeating a Bone Dragon; he believes it can enable Dragon Ancestor cultivation and control of the True Dragon Myriad Realms 3904.
  • True Dragon Myriad Realms’ heavenly mandate — Ultimately given to Ye Han to help unite their realms 3906.
