Sir Awen nodded, then slowly floated over to sit in a nearby chair. He smiled and said:
"That's good. But you didn't come here just to share the good news, did you? Go on. Is there anything you want to ask? I know you have a lot of questions right now."
Since Sir Awen had gotten straight to the point, Lynn dispensed with the pointless pleasantries as well and said:
"Yes, I do have a lot of questions. White Night already told me what happened while I was unconscious, but I still wanted to come and ask you in person. I want to know..."
Lynn's expression slowly grew complicated as he looked at Sir Awen opposite him.
"What am I?"
A brief silence fell over the room after those words.
He had had so many questions, but when they reached his lips, they had condensed into just those three words.
Sir Awen paused and slowly took off his glasses, his expression still gentle. Clearly, he had known Lynn would come to ask him this question.
Looking into Lynn's solemn eyes, he smiled faintly and said:
"You're Lynn, a Night Doctor of our Dark Night City, and the hope that the Matriarch and all of us might leave this world."
That was not the answer Lynn wanted.
Yet his gaze was as gentle as a spring breeze. It seemed he had not answered, and yet he also seemed to have given Lynn the answer he wanted.
The meaning of those words was simple.
No matter who you really are, in our eyes, you are the young man named Lynn, one of the Night Doctors, and the hope cherished by the Matriarch and the many Origins trapped in torment.
Lynn pondered this, then finally took a deep breath and said:
"Thank you."
