Leadership and Organization
- The Matriarch — Founder and original supreme leader. Her protective barrier safeguards the city for thousands of years, and its central High Tower represents her authority 778 817 1458.
- Sir Awen — Acts on the Matriarch's behalf and manages administration, planning, reconstruction, and defense. His coordination is central to the city's expansion into specialized districts 1458 1504 1809 1810.
- Lynn — Develops from a newly joined Night Doctor into a decision-maker for the entire city. An external assessment identifies him as its de facto leader because of the Origins gathered around him; the Legion later recognizes him as its King 1070 1306 2450.
- White Night — An Eight-Rank Veteran who commands elite Night Doctors, participates in leadership meetings, and coordinates operations against the Flesh Cult 764 920 1458.
- Meritorious Figures — Senior Night Doctors who attend high-level conferences, can deploy the city's finest specialized forces, and may activate the emergency holy barrier when the Matriarch cannot take control 778 920 1458.
Sir Awen identifies a shortage of technical talent during reconstruction: the city's Origins are reliable fighters, but most lack construction and planning experience 1810.
Defenses and Military Capabilities
Holy Barrier
The Matriarch leaves a supreme holy barrier that protects the city for thousands of years 778.
- Night Doctors ring the towers' bells to activate it during an emergency 778.
- Holy beams refract between more than a dozen towers, forming a protective network over the city 778.
- It can be authorized by the great Meritorious Figures during an outside invasion when the Matriarch cannot immediately assume control 778.
- It is not invulnerable: the Flesh Dominator's coordinated attack breaches the defenses 1433.
Psionic Concealment and Mobility
Sir Awen's reality-warping abilities allow the city to escape conventional space and conceal its movements 1433 1634.
- Dimensional displacement: He moves the entire city into a higher dimension during the first wave of the Flesh Dominator's attack 1433.
- Concealed relocation: Psionics hide the mobile city in another dimension superimposed upon reality after it passes through a Boundary Gate 1634.
- Emergency protection: He makes the city insubstantial when a Root-Level flesh creature spreads beneath its foundations 1614.
- Limit: Dimensional isolation does not stop an attack already planted inside the population; infected residents erupt after the city is displaced 1433.
Specialized Night Doctor Forces
Dark Night City maintains elite contingents designed to counter particular threats 920.
- Documented specialties include anti-machine, anti-Evil Spirit, anti-flesh, anti-curse, and anti-pervert units 920.
- Members are selected from thousands of candidates and possess unwavering faith 920.
- The Anti-Flesh Night Doctor Collective includes fighters at least Transcendent level, with bodies nearly two and a half meters tall and tentacles beneath their robes 920.
- A Beacon can establish a psionic connection and warp hundreds of elite Night Doctors from the city to a remote deployment point 920.
Allied Armies and Emergency Systems
- Coalition forces: Major deployments combine the Night Doctor Collective, Colossus consciousnesses, Dolls from the Black Fortress, and Titan's independent legion led by a Monarch-Level ghost king 1641.
- Instant combat readiness: After reconstruction, Sir Awen installs a system allowing selected leaders to activate layered barriers and restrictions immediately. Lynn holds the foremost permission 1976.
- Atomic surveillance: Following attacks by the black-robed figure, invisible atomic machinery monitors virtually every part of the city 2051.
- Highest-level mobilization: The city can close its gates, recall its Origins, and order the Black Fortress to retrieve its Dolls 2233.
History
Founding and the Plague Doctor Schism
The Self-Binding Angel builds Dark Night City, which endures for thousands of years under her protection. The Night Doctors uphold ideals of saving and healing, while the opposing Plague Doctors believe creatures who fall into the world are guilty and deserve suffering 374 775 817.
Following their split, the Plague Doctors repeatedly attempt to destroy the city and uproot the Matriarch's faction. Their infiltration continues for centuries, corrupting Night Doctors from within. Later investigations reveal that compromised elite potion makers used the city's research facilities to develop an anti-mechanical plague 374 546.
Curse City War and the Magic-Array Crisis
The Matriarch authorizes Sir Awen and the city's elite forces to participate in the Curse City conflict. After the victory over the Plague Doctors, the garrison welcomes the returning fleet, numbering more than a thousand warships, alongside three Titan Heads. The Night Doctors credit Lynn with a decisive contribution to the victory 546 764.
Soon afterward, an enormous magic array appears over Dark Night City. Evacuation proves too slow for a crisis of that scale, and White Night leads the effort to activate the ancient holy barrier. The Matriarch later explains that her Fallen Angel personality had revived; with her memories restored, she imposes restrictions allowing Sir Awen to intervene if it awakens again 775 778 817.
Campaigns and New Residents
The city supports Lynn's operations beyond Hell, sending White Night and hundreds of Anti-Flesh Night Doctors to hunt Flesh Cult bases on Blue Star. Lynn subsequently directs its forces against worldwide branches exposed through the cult's compromised communications 920 1077.
Its expanding activities also include a campaign against the Desire Sect. Lynn later brings the Mother Tree of Desire through a Boundary Gate to settle outside the city, despite Sir Awen's concerns about her influence over residents 1268 1375 1398 1399.
The Flesh Dominator's Assault
The Flesh Dominator launches a carefully prepared attack while Lynn is away. Flesh Leviathans appear above the city, while infected residents and concealed cult agents spread destructive black lesions from within. Sir Awen's dimensional displacement initially blocks the external bombardment but cannot neutralize the internal sabotage 1416 1433.
The Matriarch's defenses fail, and the protecting Origins begin losing control. The Mother Tree draws roughly seventy percent of the diseased growths out of the city and onto herself before succumbing. Sir Awen evacuates uninfected Night Doctors, but after losing control he kills almost everyone still remaining inside 1430 1433 1457.
Surviving Night Doctors from distant branches establish a stronghold outside the burning ruins. Lynn uses Remnants of the Past to witness the disaster and vows to save the city's companions and rebuild their home 1429 1430 1433 1458.
Recovery and the Mobile-City Expedition
Lynn brings the Matriarch, Sir Awen, and Colossus back to Dark Night City. Their return triggers its first wholehearted celebration since the catastrophe. Titan awakens two days later, leaving the Mother Tree as the major combatant still dormant; reconstruction accelerates under Sir Awen 1503 1504.
To avoid leaving their home exposed during another expedition, the city's leaders take the entire settlement with them. The Mother Tree's roots reinforce its foundations, blood vessels lift it, and Sir Awen conceals its passage through a Boundary Gate. It reappears above the City of Sin three hours after vanishing from its original site 1633 1634 1635.
Dark Night City's coalition defeats the Flesh God Cult–Mechanical Church alliance and kills the Flesh Dominator. Returning to its former location, the city becomes the Dark World's most renowned city-state and is recognized as a city of Origins 1672.
Reconstruction and the Ether War
A second reconstruction transforms the settlement into a much larger, multidisciplinary steel city. Materials brought from the Endless Sea improve the structural strength of its buildings, while Constantine's arrival adds another powerful ally 1809 1816.
Ether exploits the absence of its principal defenders to enter the city, kill and assimilate guards, and attack the Mother Tree in the underground Sanctuary. Lynn returns through a Boundary Gate, and the Matriarch strikes into the Sanctuary. The ensuing fighting leaves substantial damage, requiring another rebuilding effort after Ether's defeat 1974 1976 2006.
Law Cultivation and the Abyss Expedition
The city's Origins enter seclusion to prepare for the black-robed figure. Colossus's success in fusing laws draws powerful beings from throughout Hell; more than a hundred Origins eventually gather outside the locked-down city. Lynn later appears openly before them as the figure they had feared, and newly joined Origins come under his discipline 2087 2088 2110 2115.
On Lynn's warning, Dark Night City begins its largest-ever war mobilization and descends through a Boundary Gate into the First Abyss Plane. Later, after the Legion returns to Hell, the city seals itself off for intensive cultivation aided by captured Divine Sparks 2233 2234 2450 2456.
Unified Command and the Final Siege
After inheriting Hell's authority, Aivier formally integrates Hell's forces with Dark Night City's forces under Lynn's leadership. Together with the returning Exile Defense Line, they are reorganized into the second Deity Army Formation 2576.
When the Nightmare Swarm approaches, Silver Fantasy and the last legion prepare to hold the city until their King completes his final leap. Troops and fleets from across the Main Universe arrive despite expecting fatal losses. Their sacrifices feed the bound King's blackfire without the residents' knowledge 2619.
The defenses ultimately collapse. Silver Fantasy orders the recovered reinforcement Portals destroyed, the High Tower falls in flames, and Nightmares flood the city. Dark Night City becomes a sea of black fire, with many residents killed before they can escape 2624 2625.
Later Reunion
Dark Night City later appears with inhabited streets and an active Council Hall. Zuo Zuo reunites with Brain and the old companions, including the Matriarch, Captain, Titan, Witch God, Dollhouse, and Miss Machine Intelligence. Azephala and the Mother Tree join after Sir Awen agrees to handle their responsibilities, and the gathering becomes a party around a framed photograph of a smiling young man 2706.
