Background / History

Er Ming lived with Da Ming in the core region of the Star Dou Great Forest. Although the pair were regarded as kings of the forest, stronger ferocious beasts hidden beneath the Lake of Life had forced them to guard its approaches. Xiao Wu treated them as her younger brothers. They wanted to protect her in the human world, but she refused because their enormous soul-beast forms would attract too much attention 7 11 14.

Ji Yang sought Er Ming and Da Ming as bodyguards rather than as sources of soul rings or soul bones. When Xiao Wu returned to the forest with him, both beasts rushed to meet her, fearing she had encountered danger. They initially distrusted Ji Yang, but accepted his cooperation after Xiao Wu explained his alchemy abilities and he promised to revive her mother, Ah Rou, upon becoming a god 6 11 12.

Personality

Er Ming is intensely protective of Xiao Wu and openly delighted by her approval. He rescues Ye Lingling after seeing her treat a Soft Bone Rabbit, then beams when Xiao Wu praises him. His loyalty also makes him quick to confront threats: he prepares to attack Qian Renxue’s guards, but immediately respects Xiao Wu’s decision to avoid provoking Spirit Hall 14 29.

He can be impulsive and slow to recognize the implications of a situation. Da Ming has to correct his disappointment over their first pills, and Ji Yang stops him and Xiao Wu from testing her one-use protection against a fatal blow. He also fails to understand the romantic tension surrounding Ji Yang and Ye Lingling. Nevertheless, his careful selection of compatible soul beasts shows practical judgment in hunting 16 18 43 50.

Alchemy Experiments and Forest Cultivation

Er Ming helps Ji Yang gather test subjects and witnesses Soul Spirits return to their original soul-beast forms. This demonstration removes most of his doubts about Ji Yang’s claims. He then supplies ingredients throughout the group’s forest cultivation, while Ji Yang directs a large share of the resulting Soul Power Pills toward his and Da Ming’s breakthroughs 14 16 21 23.

Departure with the Auspicious Beast

Immediately after Er Ming and Da Ming become ferocious beasts, Di Tian assigns them to protect the Three-Eyed Golden Lion under threat of death. They nevertheless follow Ji Yang’s plan to take her along when leaving the forest, accepting responsibility for any consequences. Before departing, they appoint the hundred-thousand-year King Kong Terrorclaw Bear as the Lake of Life’s replacement guardian 26 27 28.

Sunset Forest and the Immortal Herbs

In the Sunset Forest, Er Ming prepares to attack Qian Renxue’s party over its connection to Bibi Dong, but stands down at Xiao Wu’s request. After Ji Yang forces the party to retreat, Er Ming orders them to leave. He and Da Ming subsequently locate the Ice and Fire Yin Yang Well, where their openly displayed strength intimidates Dugu Bo 29 30 31 32.

The immortal-herb expedition also benefits Er Ming directly through the Singular Velvet Sky Chrysanthemum Pill. After the group’s gains, Ji Yang assigns him another hunting mission, explaining that the improved Soul Spirit Pills can restore captured beasts simply by being crushed 40 42 51.
