Background / History

The Nine Heart Begonia Curse

Ye Lingling is the granddaughter of Ye Renxin, the Benevolent Medical Sage. Her clan’s inherited Nine Heart Begonia Martial Soul permits only two living bearers at a time: when a new bearer appears, one of the existing two dies. Awakening her Martial Soul therefore cost Ye Lingling one of her parents, although the passage does not specify which. The loss left her withdrawn and deeply resentful of the curse 14 18.

Generations of the Ye clan had failed to find a solution. When Ji Yang offered to break the curse through Martial Soul evolution, she initially doubted him but ultimately accepted the chance 19.

Rescue and Joining the Pill Tower

While seeking her second Soul Ring, Ye Lingling was separated from her protective party. Ji Yang suspected that the beast tide caused by his group’s arrival was responsible. The Titan Giant Ape found her treating an injured Soft Bone Rabbit, killed a Man Faced Demon Spider threatening her, and brought her to the Lake of Life 14.

Ji Yang initially kept his alchemy secret from her. He later invited her into his faction, offering a seventy-to-eighty-percent chance of resolving her Martial Soul’s curse. Ye Lingling agreed, received the Life Sunflower Soul Spirit Pill, and became a member of the organization subsequently named the Pill Tower 15 19 20.

After learning how Soul Spirits worked, she voluntarily swore on her Martial Soul and life not to reveal them or their pills. She also swore to protect Ji Yang’s alchemy secrets once she was permitted to witness his refining process 20 21.

Return Home and the Medicine Garden

Ji Yang sent Ye Lingling home with a supply of pills so her grandfather would know she was safe. He instructed her to conceal her unusual Soul Rings and Soul Spirit, collect old whale rubber with Ye Renxin’s help, and befriend Dugu Yan. Dugu Bo’s Medicine Garden contained the immortal herbs he hoped would resolve her curse. The Titan Giant Ape escorted her out of the forest 21 22.

Over the next three years, she frequently visited Ji Yang and Xiao Wu, collecting pills and bringing food and daily necessities. She also returned to absorb the Soul Bones Ji Yang selected for her 23 24.

Ye Lingling earned Dugu Yan’s trust and was invited to the Ice and Fire Yin Yang Well. When Ji Yang arrived independently, her hidden Pill Tower membership eventually came to light. She apologized for approaching Dugu Yan with the Medicine Garden in mind, while insisting that their friendship was genuine. Ji Yang confirmed that she had not supplied the garden’s location; he also falsely claimed that she had asked him to cure the Dugu family, helping secure their forgiveness 31 35.

Evolution and Divine Selection

At the Medicine Garden, Ye Lingling used her Life Sunflower King to prepare Dugu Yan for Martial Soul evolution by removing her poison. She then received the Aromatic Silk Beauty Pills that fulfilled Ji Yang’s promise to her 37 39 44.

The life aura of her evolved Sacred Heart Begonia attracted the Goddess of Life’s attention. After examining Ye Lingling through the Divine Realm Center, the goddess chose her as a successor and bestowed the Life Nine Trials. The Asura God was astonished that the evolution had succeeded without being stopped by the universe laws 45 47 48.

Appearance

• At their first meeting: Although only ten, Ye Lingling appeared twelve or thirteen 23.
• After reaching Soul King: At thirteen, she looked like a young woman in her early twenties. The passage attributes this accelerated physical development to breakthroughs in Soul Master cultivation 23.

Personality

Ye Lingling initially has an aloof, quiet manner shaped by the loss caused by her Martial Soul. Nevertheless, she is compassionate enough to heal an injured Soft Bone Rabbit while exposed to danger. She is also observant: she notices Ji Yang’s unusual reaction to her name and correctly guesses that Soul Spirits are related to Soul Beast souls 14 15 18 19 20.

She respects confidential information, refraining from questioning unexplained disappearances and voluntarily taking secrecy oaths. Hope of breaking the curse gradually makes her more cheerful and willing to initiate conversations with Ji Yang and Xiao Wu 18 20 21.

Her reserve gives way to open excitement when her Martial Soul evolves. She cries with relief, proudly explains its new abilities, and becomes embarrassed by her companions’ praise 44 45.
