"Really, mister?"
Naruto's eyes widened, lighting up.
"You're the best! It's a promise, okay? I'll definitely come tomorrow!"
"Of course! When have I ever lied to you?"
Teuchi laughed heartily, his eyes full of encouragement.
"Awesome! Thanks, mister! I'll be going, then!"
Naruto waved enthusiastically, then turned and ran out of the Ichiraku Ramen Shop, carrying the extra warmth Teuchi had given him.
Naruto walked home alone. Once the bustle faded, loneliness wrapped itself around him again.
But it was different from before.
"Classmates..."
Naruto repeated the word softly. His lips curved into a smile, but soon pressed tightly together again.
Friends? He didn't dare hope for that.
But at least... the way they looked at him was different.
For Naruto, the kindness he had received today was already a luxury.
He quickened his pace and returned to his apartment.
When he closed the door, he was alone in the world once again.
At last, the smile he had forced himself to keep all the way home crumbled completely.
Without warning, hot tears spilled from his eyes, slid down his cheeks, and dripped onto the floor.
He made no sound. His shoulders merely trembled as he let the tears flow silently.
Those tears held the joy of eating free ramen, the aching sadness of being treated like someone "normal," an unreachable longing for the word "friend," and the hurt and loneliness of his own circumstances.
Maybe... at school, Genya would still greet me casually, just like he did today?
Maybe Ino would still talk to me so freely?
Maybe Hinata would still answer me in that quiet voice?
That tiny, uncertain hope was like a spark in the darkness.
Faint as it was, it truly existed.
Naruto raised his hand, wiped the tears from his face hard, and sniffled.
He walked to the window and gazed at the scattered lights of Konoha outside.
Most of those lights stood for warm homes and people waiting for their loved ones to return.
He clenched his fists and murmured softly, as though swearing an oath to himself.
"Just you wait... I, Naruto Uzumaki, will become Hokage and earn everyone's recognition! Then... then I'll definitely..."
I'll definitely have real friends and a truly warm home.
For Naruto, this night was still a lonely one.
Yet somehow, it seemed just a little different from the countless lonely nights before it.
That bowl of ramen mingled with tears, and that brief spell of lively company, had taken root in the barren soil of his heart.
Meanwhile, Genya, Nami, Hinata, and Ino had finished sparring at the training park and headed home, each carrying their own thoughts as they disappeared into Konoha's night.
The threads of fate were, without anyone realizing it, entwining more and more people.
Elsewhere, Genya returned home.
The aroma of food filled the house, but his father, Sosuke Uchiha, was nowhere to be seen.
His mother, Izumi, was tidying up in the kitchen. Hearing him come in, she poked her head out, a trace of worry lingering beneath the smile on her gentle face.
"You're back, Genya? Did you have fun with your friends?"
Izumi wiped her hands and came over.
"Yeah, it was pretty good. Mother, where's Father? Did he miss dinner again?"
Genya asked casually.
Izumi's smile faded a little, and she sighed softly.
"Yes, the clan... called another meeting. Your father was summoned. He hurriedly ate a few bites before dinner and left."
She looked out the window toward the center of the Uchiha Clan Compound, where the clan head's residence and meeting hall stood.
"Lately... the meetings have been getting more and more frequent."
Genya nodded without asking any more questions. He stepped closer and, like any ordinary child, told his mother about his end-of-term exams at school that day.
His stories about eating ramen with his friends and sparring in the park eased much of the worry on Izumi's face.
He could sense that his mother, too, needed this everyday warmth to dispel the gloom brought on by her husband's frequent attendance at the meetings.
He chatted with his mother for quite a while. Only when Izumi urged him to bathe and rest did Genya return to his room.
He closed the door.
A deep calm and a mocking expression replaced the look on Genya's face.
He walked to the window and looked toward the center of the compound, as though he could hear the endless arguments coming from there.
"Another meeting... meetings every single day."
Genya muttered, making no effort to hide his scorn.
"What could they possibly accomplish? It's just the same factions arguing back and forth, no different from haggling at a market."
Under the village's pressure and suspicion, the Uchiha Clan had long since split into several factions.
The conservatives.
They were represented by some of the elderly elders and clansmen who feared conflict.
They advocated continued patience, communication, and compliance with the village's arrangements, hoping to secure room to survive through compromise and naively believing that bowing their heads would bring peace.
To Genya, these people were practically washing their necks clean and offering them to Danzo's blade, all while expecting him to show mercy.
They were seriously sick in the head!
The radicals.
With hardliners such as Uchiha Yashiro at their core, they advocated forceful resistance.
Some were even secretly planning an armed revolt, believing the Uchiha's strength was enough to make the village wary.
These people had admirable courage but no brains. They utterly underestimated the ruthlessness and preparations of the Konoha High Command. If fighting really broke out, the Uchiha would absolutely be the first to have their "rebellion suppressed," and their fate might be even worse than the Hyuga's.
The fence-sitters in the middle.
For now, most of the clan, including his own father, Sosuke Uchiha, seemed to occupy this awkward position.
They were angry and disheartened by the village's actions, yet unwilling to go to the extreme of rebellion.
They tried to find a viable middle path, but between the fierce arguments of the two factions and the pressure from outside, they were often caught in the middle, unable to produce a genuinely workable plan.
"A heap of loose sand."
After thinking for a moment, Genya reached his conclusion.
They lacked a unified, sensible will. Despite their powerful kekkei genkai and fighting strength, they blundered through political struggles like headless flies.
And as for their clan head, Uchiha Fugaku...
"Uchiha Fugaku... as a clan head, he's really..."
Genya shook his head. He didn't say the word "incompetent" outright, but his meaning could not have been clearer.
Fugaku was powerful and possessed the Mangekyō Sharingan. He was composed by nature, but indecisive.
His greatest problem, however, was his lack of decisiveness and political boldness.
He saw the clan's predicament and felt his clansmen's anger, yet he could not firmly unite their voices and formulate a clear strategy.
He tried to strike a balance between the radicals and the conservatives, but usually ended up pleasing neither side, with meetings degenerating into arguments.
Time slipped away in meaningless disputes, while the crisis drew closer by the day.
