Background / History

Kakashi is the son of Hatake Sakumo, the renowned Konoha shinobi known as White Fang. Sakumo died by suicide after public condemnation over a mission in which he saved his comrades. Kakashi believed that both the comrades his father rescued and the village's hostile public opinion had driven him to his death 5.

His childhood team included Rin Nohara and Obito Uchiha. Rin died on the battlefield, while Obito was believed to have died in his early teens without his entire body being recovered. Kakashi also lost his teacher, Minato Namikaze, and Minato's wife, Kushina. These losses left him emotionally withdrawn; he spent years in the Anbu functioning as a detached “mission machine.” Leaving the Anbu and becoming a team-leading jonin gradually helped him recover 4 37.

Kakashi's lethargic manner contrasts with his seriousness about dangerous missions. He refuses to let a seemingly ordinary client use a rogue jonin as a sparring partner, even when offered additional gold and an S-rank commission. He also positions himself where he can watch both his companions and their surroundings 27.

His loyalty to Konoha can conflict with his gratitude and sympathy. Although Shuofang Si's accusations help him reconsider his father's death, Kakashi does not stop the villagers from beating Shuofang Si. He hesitates, then limits his intervention to telling them to leave the man alive, fearing that further action would call his village loyalty into question 10.

Past failures and lost comrades remain painful subjects. He is particularly distressed by the prospect of failing a mission or failing to protect his companions. When Shuofang Si exposes Naruto's parentage and neglect, Kakashi recognizes that his own emotional withdrawal helped him ignore Naruto's suffering; afterward, he resolves to take responsibility for the boy 37 39 42.
