Background / History
Orochimaru spent many years in Konoha, where he studied under Hiruzen Sarutobi and commanded ninja in battle. Alongside Tsunade and Jiraiya, he earned his reputation as one of the Sannin while fighting on the front lines of the Second Shinobi World War 4.
He later defected from Konoha. During the Konoha Crush, Shuofang Si publicly alleges that Hiruzen deliberately allowed him to escape. Orochimaru declines to answer, but veterans recall heavy Anbu casualties during the pursuit and begin questioning Hiruzen’s account of the incident. Shuofang Si also accuses Orochimaru of experimenting on village residents 4 7.
Appearance
- Paper-white skin — emphasized by the purple light of the Four Violet Flames Formation 7.
- Serpentine eyes — repeatedly convey contempt, curiosity, excitement, and greed 4 7 8 29.
- Husky, silken voice — described as resembling a snake’s tongue brushing an ear 7.
- Snake-like mannerisms — licks his lips while discussing Raiga’s weapon and extends his neck to evade a thrown stone 11 29.
Personality
Orochimaru is cold and contemptuous toward people he considers powerless. He initially dismisses Shuofang Si as an insect incapable of molding chakra, and later studies the severely injured villager without pity. Nevertheless, Shuofang Si’s interference and the ensuing public arguments repeatedly capture his curiosity 7 9 10.
His cruelty extends beyond killing. Although he enters Konoha intending to kill Hiruzen, he decides that forcing his former teacher to live through the destruction of his reputation would be a harsher punishment. He is also pragmatic: once Tobirama escapes his control, he immediately abandons his remaining plans and prepares to withdraw 8 10.
His interest in unusual abilities outweighs concern for others’ lives. He tells Sasuke not to worry about casualties among the accompanying Sound Ninja and accepts Ranmaru’s corpse as an alternative to capturing him alive 29.
Abilities & Skills
Impure World Reincarnation
Orochimaru summons deceased Hokage to fight Hiruzen during the Konoha Crush 3.
- Raises three coffins; Hiruzen suppresses one, while Hashirama Senju and Tobirama Senju emerge from the other two 3.
- Uses control talismans to restrain the summoned Hokage, but delays fully applying them while observing Hiruzen’s public humiliation 4 9.
- Successfully releases Hashirama, but cannot dismiss Tobirama after the technique’s creator exploits his built-in contingency 10.
- The poor-quality sacrifice leaves the reincarnated Tobirama weakened, though Orochimaru does not realize this when deciding to retreat 10.
Killing Intent
Orochimaru’s presence alone intimidates Konoha’s rank-and-file ninja 9.
- One ninja states that his killing intent makes his arms and legs go weak 9.
- The surrounding ninja refuse to attack when he leaves the barrier, regarding a direct confrontation as suicidal 9 12.
Neck Extension
Orochimaru extends his neck and shifts slightly to evade Shuofang Si’s weak stone throw 11.
Research and Instruction
Orochimaru studies unusual bloodline abilities and teaches Sasuke techniques at his secret base 29.
- Monitors Sasuke’s training and recognizes his work on Chidori’s shape transformation 29.
- Seeks Ranmaru specifically because of his red-eyed kekkei genkai 29.
- Maintains intelligence on powerful rogue ninja; Sasuke cites Orochimaru’s information when identifying Kakuzu’s multiple-heart survival ability 34.
Relationships
- Hiruzen Sarutobi — Former teacher and intended assassination target. Orochimaru renounces their teacher–student bond, then spares him to prolong his humiliation 7 8.
- Tsunade — Fellow Sannin and former teammate; her younger brother Nawaki was Orochimaru’s student 4 7.
- Jiraiya — Fellow Sannin. Orochimaru calls him an idiot while listing the failures surrounding Hiruzen’s rule 4 8.
- Senju Nawaki — Student who died while assigned to Orochimaru’s squad. Shuofang Si argues that Orochimaru wanted to protect him and suggests internal sabotage caused his death; this remains an accusation rather than a confirmed finding 7.
- Sasuke Uchiha — Student and mission operative. Orochimaru watches him with visible greed, while Sasuke seeks further instruction despite recognizing that interest 29.
- Sound Four — Subordinates who maintain the Four Violet Flames Formation and accompany his withdrawal 8 10 11.
- Tobirama Senju — Reanimated combatant who breaks free of Orochimaru’s restraints and resists release, prompting Orochimaru to retreat 9 10.
- Shuofang Si — Civilian provocateur whose intervention derails the planned conclusion of the Konoha Crush. Orochimaru alternates between dismissing him, enjoying his disruption, and mocking his near-fatal injuries 4 8 9 10.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Konoha Crush
Orochimaru attacks Konoha in cooperation with Sunagakure. His people use the Temple of Nirvana Technique to put arena spectators to sleep, while he battles Hiruzen inside the Four Violet Flames Formation and summons the First and Second Hokage 1 3 4.
Shuofang Si brings villagers to the barrier and turns their attention toward allegations against Hiruzen. Orochimaru initially ignores him, then watches with increasing interest as the crowd rejects the Third Hokage. After Tobirama removes Hiruzen from office, Orochimaru decides that killing his disgraced teacher would let him off too easily 4 7 8.
Shuofang Si prolongs the confrontation by provoking an argument between villagers and ninja. Distracted by the spectacle, Orochimaru gives Tobirama time to undo his restraints. His release technique dismisses Hashirama but leaves Tobirama intact. Orochimaru withdraws with the Sound Four after briefly taunting the beaten Shuofang Si 9 10 11.
Altered Timeline
The confrontation ends with Hiruzen alive and Orochimaru’s arms unsealed. Shuofang Si later identifies these changes, together with Tobirama’s continued presence, as major sources of disruption to the Naruto world’s subsequent events. He observes that Sasuke’s defection appears to have occurred early, but does not establish its precise cause 8 23.
Ranmaru Retrieval Mission
At his secret base, Orochimaru sends Sasuke to Wood Sorrel Gold Mine Mountain to capture Ranmaru. He assigns Sound Ninja as support, permits casualties, and suggests taking Raiga Kurosuki’s Thunder Sword as well. He prefers Ranmaru alive but will accept his corpse 29.
The mission intersects with Konoha’s operation against Raiga and Kakuzu’s recruitment attempt. Sasuke abandons his immediate focus on Ranmaru and the weapon to pursue Kakuzu for information about Itachi 31.
