Background / History
Previous Lives
Yu Chen originally lived on Earth as an ordinary office worker. A truck struck him while he was working overtime late at night, sending him to the Pokémon world. There, he spent over a decade working at Professor Oak’s Laboratory as an employee rather than a student, handling errands and documents while learning Pokémon training methods 1 27.
After saving enough to buy his first Dragon-type Pokémon Egg, he intended to begin a journey with the hatchling. Instead, he was caught in a battle between Groudon and Kyogre and swept into spatial turbulence, leading to his third life on the Douluo Continent 1.
His knowledge of Douluo came mainly from anime and short videos, especially tournament scenes and female characters. He remembers useful opportunities but lacks detailed knowledge of cultivation methods 1 2.
Life in Zonghun Village
Old Tom found Yu Chen as a baby beside the road and raised him. A fine white jade pendant in his bundle bore the character “Chen”; Old Tom took “Yu” from the word for jade and combined the two to name him. The pendant remains a possible clue to his unidentified birth parents 20.
Yu Chen noticed his unusual constitution from the age of three. He ate far more than ordinary children and secretly trained in running, strength, and endurance in the woods. Exercise left him more energetic rather than exhausted 3.
Appearance
- Build: Tall and sturdy even at six, when Wang Sheng initially doubts that he is a first-year student 6.
- Height: Reaches approximately 1.8 meters before leaving Nuoding Academy at nine 24.
- Physique: Broad shoulders, a thick back, firm muscles, and wheat-brown skin 22 24.
- Facial appearance: Described as handsome at the Heaven Dou academy’s admissions office; his mature appearance makes teachers question his recorded age 42.
- Dragon transformation: His transformed limbs enlarge and acquire golden scales and sharp claws. Both arms and his right leg are documented as capable of transformation 31 40.
- Soul-bone absorption: The Blue Silver Emperor bone strengthens him without changing his face or ordinary appearance 22.
Personality
Yu Chen values independence and is wary of obligations disguised as generosity. He postpones Spirit Hall recruitment, rejects joining a major power merely for protection, and declines a city lord’s offered storage soul tool because he suspects it would create a debt of gratitude 2 27 38.
He is diligent but not blindly deferential. He questions Yu Xiaogang’s proposed soul-ring choices, studies borrowed reference books eagerly, and insists on learning combat techniques rather than relying entirely on Xiao Bai. He chooses foundational academy study over immediate main-team membership despite Qin Ming’s confidence in his strength 9 16 44 50.
His gratitude is strongest toward those who raised and supported him. He considers Old Tom’s care more important than unknown blood ties, recognizes the village’s hopes for him, and uses his growing influence to help Ming Dashan obtain cultivation resources 20 44.
His kindness does not extend to indiscriminate mercy. After the Wolf Bandits massacre villagers, he deliberately has their leader burned alive, regarding the suffering as repayment for the victims 35.
Abilities & Skills
Xiao Bai Dragon
His first martial soul is a detached, intelligent silver dragon. Yu Chen treats her as a Pokémon and training partner, unaware that she contains part of the Silver Dragon King’s soul 3 4.
- Independent action: Xiao Bai can scout, retrieve objects, and remain connected to him over substantial distances; she reaches a waterfall roughly forty or fifty kilometers from Zonghun Village 20 21 31.
- Communication: They communicate through speech, cries, and gestures. Neither can directly read the other’s thoughts 21.
- Soul-ring absorption: Xiao Bai swallows rings and transmits their energy to Yu Chen, bearing most of the absorption strain herself. Jin Ying identifies this as a key reason he can exceed ordinary ring-age limits 26 46.
- Shared development: Ring absorption strengthens both Xiao Bai and Yu Chen, contrary to the limited bodily feedback usually associated with detached martial souls 26.
- Training limitation: Keeping her released consumes soul power. Early on, he recalls her once his reserves fall below half 3.
Pokémon-Based Training
Yu Chen applies the training knowledge accumulated at Professor Oak’s Laboratory to martial-soul cultivation 1 27.
- Teaches Xiao Bai Rest and trains her natural fire attacks without requiring a fire soul ring 3 4 8.
- Develops several applications from a single elemental soul skill rather than treating each ring as one fixed move 13 27.
- Keeps Xiao Bai outside his body, then meditates to recover the spent power, turning maintenance into repeated cultivation practice 20.
- Tailors training to Xiao Bai’s individual temperament and emphasizes trust and daily companionship 11 20.
Golden Dragon Claw and Bloodline
The Golden Dragon Claw initially manifests through his left arm. Information received during awakening identifies it as part of a full-body dragon armor martial soul, whose complete form has not yet been shown 2.
- Simultaneous martial souls: Can use the claw alongside Xiao Bai rather than switching between them 2.
- Physical enhancement: Bloodline strength remains usable without visibly transforming. Early punches can shatter a thigh-thick tree trunk 4.
- Progressive transformation: The second Xiao Bai ring unlocks transformation of both arms; Blue Silver Forest energy later transforms his right leg 31 40.
- Strength: After his second ring, he can lift the three-hundred-jin training pot with one hand. Academy reports later place his physique at Soul King level 31 48.
- Recovery: A minor arm wound heals within minutes without leaving a scar after his second-ring advancement 31.
- Early limitation: Fully summoning the left claw at level ten strains his body and soul-power reserves 2.
- Concealment: Keeps the second martial soul secret even from Ming Dashan, intending to pass visible changes off as dragon transformation from his first martial soul 2 31.
Elemental Soul Skills
| Element / Skill | Applications and Limits |
|---|---|
| Fire training | Xiao Bai breathes fire and learns stronger flame attacks through training. Early attempts to combine fire with wind fail, but a successful combined attack is later demonstrated 3 8 13 26. |
| Wind Element — Hurricane | An area attack that scatters Tang San’s Blue Silver Grass and throws him across the arena 13 16. |
| Wind Element — Flight | Lets Xiao Bai fly using wind. Yu Chen can initially travel by holding her feet, but the high soul-power cost limits this to a few minutes 13. |
| Wind Element — Wind Speed | Accelerates Yu Chen’s movement; Ming Dashan estimates a boost of at least fifty percent. Can also reinforce his soul-bone flight 17 39. |
| Earth Element — Defense | Draws earth from the ground into armor, increasing both Yu Chen’s and Xiao Bai’s defense by fifty percent 27. |
| Earth Element — Stone Edge | Raises sharp stones or pillars from the ground to impale enemies 27 33 45. |
| Water Element — Hydro Pump | Demonstrated as having both attack and control effects 46. |
| Elemental support | An unnamed skill greatly strengthens Han Bing’s ice attack; Han Bing reports roughly twice his usual power 47. |
Sandstorm
A self-created combination skill that joins Wind Element’s Hurricane with Earth Element, converting solid ground into sand and sweeping sand, dirt, and stones into the gale 33.
- Blinds and disorients groups, countering the Wolf Bandits’ numerical advantage 33.
- Allows Yu Chen to direct Ming Dashan toward individual enemies inside the obscured battlefield 33.
- Also disrupts allies’ orientation; Ming Dashan initially loses his bearings 33.
Golden Dragon Spear
The first soul skill of his second martial soul manifests a golden spear from the ring condensed by the Blue Silver King 40 41.
- Approximately two or three meters long, with overlapping dragon-scale patterns along the shaft 41.
- Completely ignores defenses at the level of fundamental rules, including defensive soul skills and external defense boosts 41.
- Comes from an approximately three-thousand-year ring whose age can increase with his strength; the spear may acquire further properties 41.
- Resembles the Golden Dragon King’s divine weapon but is not the actual divine Golden Dragon Spear 41.
Combat Learning and Internal Perception
- Ghost Shadow Perplexing Track: Learns Tang San’s footwork through repeated sparring and observation 17 20.
- Disorder Splitting Wind Hammer: Studies and copies Tang San’s forging movements while commissioning cookware 20.
- Learning limits: Cannot reproduce Purple Demon Eye or Mysterious Jade Hand merely by watching because they require Mysterious Heaven Skill’s internal energy 20.
- Internal perception: At level twenty-nine, can inspect his organs and soul-power circulation and distinguish separate energies within his second ring 27.
- Ring concealment: Transfers ashen mushroom energy from his second ring into Xiao Bai, making the thousand-year ring appear yellow. The energy is stored, not discarded, allowing its stronger state to be restored 27.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Hundred-thousand-year Blue Silver Emperor right leg soul bone — Grants flight and healing. Yu Chen uses its healing power to treat Ming Dashan’s internal bleeding and broken ribs; he conceals its true age when discussing it with him 21 22 23 35.
- Jade pendant — Fine white jade engraved with “Chen,” found with him as a baby and later returned by Old Tom 20.
- Refined-iron cookware and training pot — Commissioned from Tang San for cooking and weight training. The enormous pot weighs at least three hundred jin; Ming Dashan initially carries its heavier outer ring during their journey 19 24.
- Gold Coin Cards — Requests a card for the thirty-thousand-gold-coin Wolf Bandit reward. Later receives a separate thirty-thousand-gold-coin card from Director Xue Bai 37 48.
- Borrowed reference books — Studies Ming Dashan’s Intermediate Soul Beast Pokédex and Yu Xiaogang’s Illustrated Guide to Subdragon Soul Beasts 9 18.
Relationships

- Xiao Bai / Gu Yuena — Martial soul and cherished companion. Gu Yuena initially plans to nurture the attached soul to godhood and devour it—and potentially Yu Chen—to recover her injuries; he remains unaware of her identity and intentions 3 4.
- Di Tian — Secret protector dispatched by Gu Yuena. Supplies the Gale Griffin for Yu Chen’s first ring and continues following his growth 4 12 22.
- Tang San — Dormmate, sparring rival, and source of techniques learned by observation. Yu Chen becomes wary of his instinctive use of dangerous hidden weapons and resolves to keep some distance 6 17 18 20.
- Yu Xiaogang — Repeatedly seeks to recruit him as a disciple. Yu Chen refuses the apprenticeship while still using his reference material and attending combat training 4 8 11 16 18.
- Xiao Wu — Nuoding dormmate; Yu Chen lends her a Silver Soul Coin when she lacks bedding 6 8.
- Oscar — Traveling companion under a three-year work agreement in exchange for tuition and accommodation. Yu Chen values his restorative food martial soul and supervises his physical training 30 48.
- Ah Yin — Rescued from the waterfall chamber and replanted in the Blue Silver Forest to recover 21 39.
- Blue Silver King — Recognizes him as the Blue Silver Clan’s benefactor and rewards him by condensing a ring for Golden Dragon Claw 39 40 41.
- Qin Ming — Imperial Fighting Team recruiter who offers personal training and immediate main-team membership, then accepts Yu Chen’s preference for the Reserve Team route 44 50.

Trivia
- The name Yu Chen has followed him through all three lives, even though Old Tom independently gives him that name based on the jade pendant 20.
- He has no intention of attending Shrek Academy, considering it too poor and lacking the advanced theoretical resources he needs 7.
- He initially hopes for a journey like a Pokémon Trainer’s rather than a career within a major faction; the Imperial Fighting Team’s travel and arena schedule appeals to that ambition 2 44.
