"I took a rough look at the map. I think our best option is to divert water from the Hinterlands River straight into the Northern Hills of the Seaside Plains. We should make as much use as possible of the valleys and other terrain there to form natural river channels, guiding the water toward where the Northern Hills meet the Plains. Then we can choose a site for a dam and start digging an artificial channel below it or beside it, so the river runs through the entire Plains from north to south."
Mez'dra speared a piece of steak and said between bites, "To keep the work to a minimum, we'll route this north-to-south artificial river through low-lying valleys wherever possible. That means the channel won't run straight. It'll wind around and form lakes of all sizes, taking up a lot of arable land."
"That's a good idea!" Yu Lin Bloodhawk said with a smile. "But I don't know much about these things. We have plenty of land, so losing some farmland doesn't matter! We can raise fish in the lakes and plant fruit trees on the hills. When it comes to food, elves need far more fruit than grain like wheat and corn."
"I'll send some dwarves over to help you. I brought a dozen or so with me, and they're experts in this kind of work. They can start tomorrow."
"But this is a big project," Mez'dra said. "I'll send more people over after I get back. You'll have to keep them supplied with ale. Don't try fobbing them off with that sweet-and-sour juice you elves drink."
Mez'dra chuckled as he spoke.
"Don't worry! Here, you Wildhammer Dwarves can drink as much as you like," Yu Lin Bloodhawk said with a smile. "Nobody will serve them fruit wine
