The orcs approached the elves at little more than a crawl.
The orc company commander noticed that the elves were firing less often. He knew that few soldiers remained behind him, but he did not look back. He kept pressing forward.
Suddenly, the elves widened their encirclement to two bowshots, then slowly moved inward, readjusting its center.
The orc company commander had been about to close to twenty yards when the elves abruptly changed formation. In an instant, twenty yards became fifty or sixty. He looked back in despair.
Behind him, only twenty Ravagers in full plate armor remained. Not a single other soldier was still following.
He raised his head to look at the three Infernals.
The three towering Infernals stood out clearly, but two hundred elves had now surrounded them in three separate rotating rings. Each elf who circled behind an Infernal attacked one of its legs. Some used Arcane Shot, others Common attacks, while an unbroken succession of Concussive Shots made even turning around painfully slow for the Infernals.
They were like three wild bulls surrounded by wolf packs, constantly trying to face their enemies with their most dangerous side. Yet no matter how they turned, there was always a wolf behind them, sinking its teeth savagely into their flesh.
A sudden weariness washed over the orc company commander. Demons were not as powerful as he had imagined, after all. Even they could be helpless.
All three Infernals were furious, but there was nothing they could do. Whichever direction they charged, the hateful elves' rotating encirclement moved with them. The constant magical slowing effects on their bodies allowed the elves to keep their distance with ease. For all their immense strength, they could not hit a single elf. Having all that power and nowhere to use it
