Afterward, Su Ye asked quite a few more questions, and Zhou Chang answered them all, giving him a better understanding of the Survival Game.
For instance, the first seven days were a beginner protection period. The monsters' strength was limited during those seven days, so he should hunt down as many as he could.
Opening supply crates offered a chance of obtaining all kinds of supplies, but monsters could also come out, so he needed to prepare before opening them.
He was guaranteed to encounter a gas station within those seven days, but monsters guarded it too. He would have to deal with them before he could refuel.
Once the seven-day beginner protection period ended, he would encounter all sorts of extreme weather on the Survival Road: freezing cold, scorching sun, hurricanes, acid rain, hail, and more. That made upgrading his vehicle as much as possible essential.
Then there was the vehicle itself. Gathering enough basic materials would let him upgrade it, but it was best to find a functional module first.
Each level only allowed one functional module to be added. Vehicle levels were easy to raise early on, but upgrades would become harder later. At that point, even if he had extra functional modules, he would be unable to benefit from them.
He would also encounter various secret realms later on. They were dangerous, but they held plenty of good things as well.
Besides that, the Survival Game would hold events at irregular intervals, all with generous rewards.
"All right, you're still in your seven-day beginner period, so you won't face that many dangers. Knowing this much should be enough."
"Next, let's get you some good stuff."
Zhou Chang stood as he spoke and looked at the other four men. "Which of you four wants to go first? Let's get this kid a Gray Fog Medal."
"Brother Zhou, what's a Gray Fog Medal? And can you actually control your own drop rates?" Su Ye asked in surprise.
"The Gray Fog Medal is good stuff. You'll see in a moment."
"We're Civilization Monsters, so we can indeed adjust the drop rates of the items we carry. That's a privilege the Survival Game grants us."
"But since our purpose as Civilization Monsters is to obstruct new civilizations from advancing, we set the drop rates of good items to the lowest possible level. That's why drop rates in the Survival Game are so low."
"Since you're one of Humanity, though, we'll naturally bring out the good stuff for you. Still, we can only adjust the drop rates. Whether anything drops depends on your luck."
"Don't worry about us," Zhou Chang said with a smile. "After we die, we'll revive in the Gray Mist World."
Su Ye's heart trembled at those words. Zhou Chang had said that all of Humanity on Blue Star would help him survive.
If that was true, and they could adjust their own drop rates, didn't that mean he would have a high chance of obtaining good items whenever he encountered human monsters?
A cheat! This was his very own cheat!
"Brother Zhou, my luck has always been pretty good."
After all, Su Ye wouldn't have had the chance to transmigrate if his luck were bad.
"All right, let's see just how good your luck is." Zhou Chang nodded.
"Brother Zhou, I'm ready. I've set the Gray Fog Medal's drop rate to the maximum of seventy percent."
One of the men spoke up. "The Desert Eagle has a ten percent drop rate, and fifty units of fuel have a five percent drop rate. I've set all the other junk to the lowest possible rates."
Su Ye's eyes lit up. That meant he had an eighty-five percent chance of getting at least fifty units of fuel, and a fifteen percent chance of getting something worse.
Zhou Chang nodded, then slapped the man on the shoulder. Su Ye watched the man's health instantly fall from one hundred percent to one percent.
"Go ahead," Zhou Chang said, withdrawing his hand.
Su Ye glanced at his empty hands and fell silent for a second. Then he picked up a rock from the ground and walked over to the man. "Brother Liu, forgive me for this."
"Ahem, do it from behind. Watching you from the front is scary," Brother Liu said, eyeing the head-sized rock.
Su Ye nodded, then moved behind him, raised the rock, and smashed it down hard on the back of his head.
Thud!
Brother Liu collapsed, his health bar emptying instantly.
At the very moment Brother Liu fell, a flash of light appeared, followed by a gray medal dropping to the ground.
"Pick it up and check its effects," Zhou Chang said with a smile.
Su Ye picked up the medal and examined it.
[Gray Fog Medal]: Tier 1. A medal born within the gray mist. Wearing this medal grants the player the protection of the gray mist, forcibly increasing all monsters' favorability toward you by 1 point.
"It increases favorability? And only by one point?"
Su Ye frowned. This Gray Fog Medal didn't seem all that powerful.
"Don't underestimate that one point, kid. Right now, you're still in the seven-day beginner protection period. Every monster, myself included, has a favorability of minus one toward players."
"That means, now that you have this medal, the favorability of monsters like us toward you is forcibly raised to zero."
"And under our rules as monsters, we can't attack you first as long as our favorability isn't negative."
"So with this medal, at least during these seven days of beginner protection, as long as you don't attack monsters first, all they can do is stand there and watch you," Zhou Chang explained with a smile.
Hearing that explanation, Su Ye stared at the medal with shining eyes. This really was good stuff.
Having this medal meant he no longer needed to worry about being attacked by monsters during his beginner protection period.
And if he wanted to kill monsters, he could seize the initiative. If he was strong enough to kill one in a single blow, it would be the same as having monsters stand still for him to slaughter.
"Thank you for your generous gift, Brother Liu!"
Without hesitation, Su Ye cupped his hands in thanks toward Brother Liu, who was already lying peacefully dead on the ground.
It was only because he had no incense, candles, or yellow ritual paper on hand. Otherwise, Su Ye would have insisted on burning some spirit money and offering him a stick of incense.
"You can upgrade this medal later, too. Ten tier-one medals can be fused into a tier-two medal, and so on. For now, though, this tier-one medal is enough for you."
Zhou Chang looked at the remaining three men as he spoke. "Who's next?"
"Hehehe, me! Me!"
"Seventy percent for the Desert Eagle, ten percent for a hundred units of fuel, and five percent for a case of water."
The man grinned at Su Ye. "Come on, come on! Hurry up and wreck me!"
Smack!
Zhou Chang slapped him without hesitation, and his health instantly dropped to one percent.
"Brother Hu, forgive me for this."
Su Ye raised the huge rock and brought it down again. With a thud, Brother Hu also lay peacefully dead, and a Desert Eagle dropped from him.
[Desert Eagle]: Tier 1. A powerful firearm suited to beginners. Ordinary tier-one monsters can hardly withstand it, allowing you to eliminate an enemy with every bullet. 7/7 rounds.
A smile spread across Su Ye's face. He finally had a weapon, and one that could instantly kill tier-one monsters at that. His safety now had some measure of assurance.
"Keep going."
Zhou Chang spoke.
