Appearance
- Hair and face: Short black hair, a gentle face, and eyes that curve when he smiles 10 18.
- Anbu clothing: Wears a black Anbu uniform with his mask hanging from his belt during training; later appears in a standard Anbu vest with rolled-up sleeves 27 36.
- Weapon: Carries a sword resting on his shoulder during his first meeting with Kiyoshi 10.
Personality
Shisui is an encouraging, patient teacher. He praises Kiyoshi’s commitment to fundamentals, corrects mistakes without ridicule, and repeats demonstrations when his student misses an important detail. Kiyoshi’s straight-faced excuses frequently make him laugh, but he recognizes the seriousness beneath the boy’s insistence that he trains “to stay alive” 10 18 27 28.
His protectiveness is measured rather than restrictive. He warns Kiyoshi about the attention his friendship with Naruto attracts without telling him to end it. When Root approaches, he physically places himself between the operatives and Kiyoshi, then uses clan procedure to block their recruitment attempt 26 36 41.
Shisui initially has reservations about Kiyoshi’s accusations against Danzo and cannot readily accept that Itachi would participate in the massacre. By their confrontation with the evidence, he trusts most of Kiyoshi’s information but doubts the Hokage will act against Root. He decides they must intervene themselves—even if the plan requires him to genuinely lose an eye 48 50.
Abilities & Skills
Body Flicker Technique
Shisui’s speed is reflected in his epithet, Body Flicker Shisui 18.
- Vanishes into the woods after training sessions 18 28.
- Explicitly uses the Body Flicker Technique after warning Kiyoshi about surveillance 26.
- Can approach or land without audible footsteps 18 50.
Shurikenjutsu
Shisui teaches practical combat throwing rather than relying solely on Academy instruction 18.
- Corrects grip, thumb placement, stance, and forearm-driven release 18.
- Introduces moving-target practice using a target pulled sideways by a rope 27.
- Demonstrates a wrist twist that guides a shuriken into the bull’s-eye, then slows the movement so Kiyoshi can study it 28.
- Identifies release timing and wrist angle as the remaining problems in Kiyoshi’s improved throws 28.
Taijutsu
Shisui can identify openings in basic movements and teach techniques usable in sparring 18 29.
- Notices that Kiyoshi shifts his center of gravity during a turn, exposing his left shoulder to a counterattack 18.
- Teaches Kiyoshi a Joint Lock later used to defeat Ishikawa during an Academy test 29.
- Restrains Eagle Spring by catching his wrist and twisting his forearm behind his back during the rescue operation 49.
Surveillance and Covert Operations
Shisui handles perimeter security, reconnaissance, and the more dangerous parts of the joint operations with Kiyoshi 46 47 49.
- Watches village entrances, boundary walls, and potential observers while Kiyoshi identifies people and routes within the clan grounds 46.
- Records the warehouse’s layout and guards before attempting a rescue 47.
- Kills Eagle Spring without alerting the guards, subdues two guards, and erases escape tracks 49.
- Changes meeting locations and limits contact when surveillance makes their usual routines unsafe 36 37 42.
Crow-Based Communication
Shisui’s crow serves as a lookout, messenger, and guide; the passages do not identify the technique behind its use 35 36 45 48.
- Signals that Shisui has also noticed Kiyoshi’s watcher 35.
- Visits Kiyoshi every Wednesday during the six-month training period 42.
- Collects concealed messages and leads Kiyoshi to secret meetings 45 48.
- Is recognized by Danzo as belonging to Shisui, making it a traceable connection between teacher and student 37 41.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Sword — Seen resting on his shoulder at the Training Hall 10.
- Shuriken and kunai — Brings finely honed ninja tools for Kiyoshi’s advanced training 27.

- Night-patrol lantern — Carries it when intervening in Root’s questioning at Kiyoshi’s home 36.
- Medicinal ointment — Gives Kiyoshi a small porcelain jar of medicine for his callused hands 42.
Relationships
- Uchiha Kiyoshi — Student and operational partner. Their relationship develops from private instruction into coordinated evacuations, rescue work, and planning against Danzo 18 41 46 50.
- Uchiha Mikoto — Describes them as close. Her comments about Kiyoshi prompt his interest in the boy; she later serves as the intermediary for evidence intended for the clan head 18 48.
- Misa — Mentions Kiyoshi to him before their first meeting 10.
- Uchiha Fugaku — Clan head whose approval Shisui demands before Root can recruit an Uchiha child. Shisui also sends him evidence of the hardliners’ crimes 41 48.

- Eagle Spring — Uchiha hardliner investigated and killed by Shisui after his abuse of captives is uncovered 47 49.
- Warehouse captives — Eleven people rescued by Shisui and Kiyoshi. The eldest child recognizes him by name, and Shisui personally fulfills his promise to return 47 48 49.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Becoming Kiyoshi’s Teacher
Kiyoshi selects Shisui as the intended recipient of system-obtained evidence of Danzo’s human experiments, believing him strong enough and sufficiently committed to the clan to act. Their first meeting occurs at the Training Hall, but Kiyoshi postpones showing the evidence until he can earn Shisui’s trust 10.
After hearing about Kiyoshi from Mikoto, Shisui approaches him on the Back Mountain and begins teaching shurikenjutsu. Their lessons progress from stationary targets to moving targets, while Kiyoshi offers a story about a mysterious childhood mentor to explain his unusual knowledge. Shisui advises him to keep that story secret 18 27 28.
Protecting Kiyoshi from Root
Shisui first warns Kiyoshi that his friendship with Naruto will attract attention. He later interrupts a masked Root operative’s questioning at Kiyoshi’s home and tells the boy to abandon his usual route and training spot 26 36.
When Danzo and two Root agents attempt recruitment directly, Shisui insists on the clan head’s approval. Kiyoshi claims Shisui has promised to teach him until graduation; although no such promise had previously been made, Shisui confirms it and subsequently accepts the commitment 41.
Over the following six months, Shisui reduces their meetings to once every two weeks, uses changing locations, and maintains contact through his crow. Root’s inactivity does not persuade him to resume their old arrangements 42.
Evacuations and Eagle Spring’s Warehouse
As clan unrest grows, Shisui and Kiyoshi begin moving vulnerable households out of the compound. Their first transfer relocates five people from two households, with Kiyoshi guiding them and Shisui covering the perimeter 46.
While returning, they discover bound captives being escorted toward an abandoned warehouse. Reconnaissance reveals seven children and four young adults being held with little food or water. Eagle Spring is attempting to force eye awakenings through pain; Shisui identifies the hardliners’ larger goal as producing Mangekyo Sharingan for a coup 46 47 48.
Shisui sends evidence to Fugaku through Kiyoshi and Mikoto, then carries out the rescue. He kills Eagle Spring, guides the eleven captives out, and conceals their escape 48 49.
Planning the Trap for Danzo
Kiyoshi finally shows Shisui images and records identifying Danzo as the buyer of Eagle Spring’s collected eyes. Shisui accepts most of Kiyoshi’s information but retains doubts about Itachi’s future actions and the Hokage’s willingness to punish Root 50.
Their agreed plan has several parts 50:
- Expose a known opening: Use Shisui’s established solo downstream patrol, which occurs once every ten days, to draw Danzo into acting.
- Make the theft genuine: Allow Danzo to take an eye so the injury and resulting records are credible.
- Evacuate civilians first: Prioritize children and ordinary people; leave difficult-to-move jōnin until last.
- Limit disclosure: Keep most evacuees unaware so the planned performance appears real.
- Let Itachi witness the opening: Position him to enter the later operation under pressure from the Hokage.
The chapter ends with the plan settled and Kiyoshi preparing for Shisui to appear dead to the village. Neither the eye theft nor his apparent death has yet occurred 50.
