Background / History
As a boy, Madara met Hashirama Senju while skipping stones on the Naka River. Despite their clans’ blood feud, they developed a shared ambition to build a village. Their elders forced them apart. A leaf-patterned skipping stone found in the Small Buddha Hall leads Setsuna to infer that Madara was once confined there for befriending Hashirama; the confinement is not independently confirmed 28.
By the main storyline, Madara leads the Uchiha and has earned the title Asura of the Ninja World through repeated battlefield victories. Neither he nor his younger brother Izuna has children. After Setsuna loses his parents and unborn brother, the elders regard the boy as the sole remaining heir of the patriarch’s lineage and urge Madara to cultivate him as his successor 2 32.
Madara and Hashirama secretly devise a strategy of expanding their clans in different directions to create distance and a strategic buffer. They hope that generations of separation will weaken the inherited hatred and make peace negotiations possible. After both lose siblings to clan violence, they also establish a prohibition against killing young children 43 44.
Appearance
Setsuna initially judges the Warring States-era Madara to look as though he is in his early twenties, younger than his Konoha-founding game incarnation 1.
- Hair: Long, spiky black hair extending behind his shoulders 32.
- Features: Sharply defined, finely sculpted features and deep black eyes 32.
- Clothing: Wears dark casual clothes during his training bout with Setsuna 42.
- Presence: Radiates enough chakra to fill the clan meeting hall; his intimidating bearing frightens ordinary children even when he intends to be gentle 1 33.
Personality
Madara is arrogant, composed, and accustomed to imposing solutions through superior strength. He initially assumes that weaker allies should accept the arrangements made by stronger clans, treating moral justification as an empty concern. Nevertheless, he changes his approach when Setsuna correctly anticipates the Hagoromo’s objections to outside interference 34 36.
He tolerates challenges to his own authority more readily than insults directed at Izuna. Setsuna’s abuse often earns amusement or patient scrutiny, but invoking Tobirama to attack Izuna provokes immediate anger. His protectiveness toward his brother is one of the clearest limits to his composure 2.
His pursuit of peace is tempered by responsibility for the entire Uchiha Clan. He rejects the idea that individual combat strength alone proves a leader’s worth, emphasizing the survival of genin, weaker clanspeople, and those unable to mold chakra. This makes him more cautious than the isolated, world-changing figure Setsuna remembers from the original story 42 44.
Madara can be emotionally blunt and awkward with children. He tells Setsuna to look forward rather than mourn the dead, yet becomes visibly embarrassed and retreats when his attempt to help with another child’s cremation causes uncontrollable crying 32 33.
Abilities & Skills
Chakra and Intimidation
Madara’s chakra and killing intent exert pressure even without an attack 1 2.
- His chakra permeates the entire hall during the clan assembly 1.
- He expects his battle-commander killing intent to overwhelm a five-year-old and is surprised when Setsuna appears distracted instead 2.
- A surge of chakra shatters Shadow Hands restraining his ankles 42.
Taijutsu and Unarmed Defense
Madara defeats Setsuna’s combined weapon and ninjutsu attacks primarily through unarmed counters 35 42.
- Crushes Shadow Hands with his grip and breaks them through joint locks 35 42.
- Redirects scythe and sword attacks with his hands, elbows, and precise shifts of posture 35 42.
- Evades fireballs and attacks from several directions while exploiting gaps between weapons 35 42.
- Disarms, restrains, and throws Setsuna despite the boy’s enhanced physical strength 35 42.
- Uses no weapons in their second training bout, even allowing Setsuna access to ninjutsu and explosive tags 42.
Fire Release
Madara directly demonstrates Fire Release: Great Fireball, using it to ignite funeral pyres 32 33.
- Performs the technique with the Tiger Seal, including a one-handed seal when assisting Xiao An 32 33.
- His Majestic Demolisher Flame serves as Setsuna’s benchmark for the scale of the Hagoromo’s amplified Fire Release; Madara does not perform it in that scene 20.
Movement and Substitution
- Body Flicker Technique: Uses it to leave the cremation ground abruptly 33.
- Substitution Technique: Replaces himself with a log after Setsuna’s shadow kunai cut his calves, then captures the boy from behind 35.
- Rapid repositioning: Appears behind Setsuna immediately after breaking his shadow restraints 42.
Mangekyō Sharingan and Susanoo
Setsuna identifies the current Madara as possessing an ordinary Mangekyō Sharingan, contrasting him with the stronger Eternal Mangekyō and Rinnegan incarnations encountered in the game 34.
- Madara has not yet used Susanoo on the battlefield at this point in the storyline 34.
- No awakening or ocular upgrade occurs in the supplied present-day events.
- Susanoo, Tengai Shinsei, Wood Dragons, and Truth-Seeking Orbs appear in descriptions of his game incarnations, rather than as demonstrations by the current Warring States-era Madara 1 35.
Leadership and Strategy
Madara combines battlefield deterrence with negotiation and long-term planning 34 36 44.
- Keeps Hashirama occupied for fifteen days while the Hagoromo fight the Senju 36.
- Adopts a rear-support role that preserves the Hagoromo’s authority over their own negotiations 36.
- Explains how attacks on enemy children could invite retaliation against Uchiha children 41.
- Recognizes Hashirama’s generosity as a restraint on Tobirama’s harsh policies 41.
- Considers the political and international consequences of overthrowing the Daimyo instead of treating military victory as sufficient 44 45.
Equipment / Items
- Ninja tool pouch — Removes it before fighting Setsuna unarmed at the Hagoromo training ground 42.
- Leaf-patterned skipping stone — Found beside the altar in the Small Buddha Hall; Setsuna believes Madara left it there during a childhood confinement 28.
Relationships
- Izuna Uchiha — Younger brother and a central object of Madara’s protectiveness. Izuna handles detailed intelligence work and represents him in dealings with their Hagoromo uncle 2 11 45.
- Setsuna Uchiha — Close blood relative and prospective heir. Madara admires his combat instincts and adaptability but worries about his ruthlessness, shortsightedness, and hostility toward peace negotiations 2 35 45.
- Hashirama Senju — Childhood friend, opposing clan leader, and partner in preparing for peace. Madara regards him as an honorable idealist, though he finds his sentimentality irritating 28 34 44 45.
- Hagoromo Clan Leader — Uncle and allied clan head. Their dealings are strained by Madara’s domineering methods until he accepts the Hagoromo’s right to direct their own negotiations 11 36.
- Huorong Uchiha — Cousin whose cremation Madara attends after returning to the clan compound 32.
- Toshihi Uchiha — Subordinate entrusted with Setsuna’s supervision, Setsuko’s case, and escorting the children from the cremation ground 32 33 35.
- Kurama Setsuko — Huorong’s partner. Madara initially questions her admission to Uchiha territory, then leaves her request to remain with Toshihi after hearing her account 32.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Setsuna’s Arrival and the Heir Question
- Madara’s game incarnation defeats Setsuna with Tengai Shinsei immediately before Setsuna awakens in the Warring States era 1.
- At the clan meeting, Madara hears Setsuna insult him and takes an amused interest in the defiant child 1 2.
- Learning that Setsuna awakened a One-Tomoe Sharingan at five convinces him that the boy possesses exceptional talent. He consults Izuna about the proposed succession, while Izuna makes his support conditional on Setsuna’s supply mission 2.
Cremation Ground
- Madara pays his respects to Huorong and ignites the funeral pyres with Great Fireball, upsetting Setsuna as his parents’ bodies burn 32.
- He questions Setsuko about the danger she poses and hears her claim that an unknown attacker entered her mental world 32.
- His attempt to assist Xiao An with his brother’s cremation frightens the child into tears. Unable to calm him, Madara delegates the escort to Toshihi and leaves 33.
Hagoromo–Senju Negotiations
- Setsuna blocks Madara at the east gate and argues that forcing a ceasefire would undermine Hagoromo sovereignty and damage the Uchiha’s standing among smaller clans 34.
- Madara tests Setsuna in combat, defeats him, and privately recognizes the ingenuity of using firelight to strengthen a shadow-based ambush 35.
- He takes Setsuna to the Hagoromo and adopts the proposed alternative: remain in the rear, wait for Hashirama to act, and intervene only if necessary 36.
- His arrival remains restricted information rather than a public display of force 38.
Teaching Setsuna the Costs of War
- Madara condemns Setsuna’s proposal to kidnap Hashirama’s son Naoki, explaining that such tactics could expose Uchiha children to retaliation 41.
- He repeatedly defeats Setsuna in an unarmed training bout to demonstrate the gap between the child and powerful adults 42.
- Setsuna manages one last surprise restraint before collapsing. Madara’s lesson stresses that reckless individual action can endanger an entire squad and clan 42.
The Daimyo and Peace
- Madara opposes Setsuna’s simplistic proposal to overthrow the Daimyo, emphasizing the numerical dominance of ordinary people and a leader’s duty to protect the weak 44.
- Privately, he tells Hashirama that removing the Daimyo might not be a bad idea, but admits he has no workable plan for the world afterward 45.
- Both agree not to act yet, recognizing that upheaval could give other countries grounds to invade the Land of Fire 45.
Anticipated Future and Black Zetsu
- Setsuna remembers a future in which Madara and Hashirama found Konoha, Madara gains the Eternal Mangekyō Sharingan, and their relationship culminates in the Valley of the End battle. These are anticipated events, not completed developments in the current storyline 3 32.
- Setsuna identifies Madara as Indra’s reincarnation and the intended core of Black Zetsu’s Eye of the Moon Plan. He believes Black Zetsu seeks to isolate Madara and drive him into despair 49.
- During the Naka River ambush, Setsuna suspects that killing Naoki is meant to restart the Senju–Uchiha war and place Izuna in mortal danger. Black Zetsu’s responsibility for that attack remains Setsuna’s deduction 49.
