Background / History

The Uchiha and Senju are ancestral enemies whose conflict has claimed members of successive generations. Toshihi attributes the deaths of his relatives and Kagami’s father to the Senju, illustrating how personal bereavement sustains the feud 4.

The Uchiha also maintain a longstanding marriage alliance with the Hagoromo. Madara and Izuna’s mother came from the Hagoromo, as did Setsuna’s mother. Their shared family connections make Setsuna a potential link between the two clans’ leadership 2 9 11.

After Madara and Hashirama become their respective clan heads, both prohibit killing young children from other clans. Izuna traces this policy to an encounter at age eight, when the two clans’ fathers were willing to sacrifice their second sons to kill the opposing child; Madara and Hashirama intervened to save them 43.

Madara and Hashirama later devise a secret territorial strategy intended to reduce direct conflict. The Uchiha expand south while the Senju expand north, creating distance and a strategic buffer in the hope that inherited hatred will weaken over generations 44.

Leadership and Organization

Clan Leadership

Position Holder Responsibilities
Clan head Madara Uchiha Leads warfare and expansion alongside the clan’s strongest fighters; bears responsibility for the safety of the whole clan 29 44.
Second-in-command Uchiha Izuna Directs field operations, conducts diplomacy with the Hagoromo, and handles intelligence analysis 9 14 45.
Designated heir Uchiha Setsuna Chosen as the remaining child of the patriarch’s lineage; his Hagoromo ancestry also strengthens the alliance 2 9 24.

Neither Madara nor Izuna has children when the elders consider Setsuna’s succession. The deaths of Setsuna’s parents and unborn brother leave him the sole remaining child of the patriarch’s lineage, making his survival a major concern for the clan 2.

Council of Elders

The council’s five numbered seats denote offices rather than age. While the clan head manages war and expansion, the elders maintain the home front 29.

Seat Responsibilities
First Elder Leads the Council of Elders 29.
Second Elder Heads the Disciplinary Hall 29.
Third Elder Manages marriages, funerals, and clan genealogy 29.
Fourth Elder Oversees the scroll library and young members’ ninjutsu and academic education 29.
Fifth Elder Administers land, resources, and finances 29.

Discipline and Protection

  • Disciplinary Hall: Handles misconduct, including insults against the clan head and behavior considered disgraceful to the Uchiha 26 27.
  • Small Buddha Hall: Used to confine Setsuna as punishment. He finds a carved skipping stone there and concludes that Madara was probably confined in the same building as a child 27 28.
  • Shared ancestry: Insulting Madara’s ancestors is treated as insulting the entire clan’s bloodline, since the Uchiha share a common ancestor 26 27.
  • Protecting young talent: After Tobirama witnesses Setsuna’s abilities, the Second Elder uses a punitive change of hairstyle to make the boy harder for potential assassins to identify 27.
  • Command responsibility: Toshihi, as the jonin leading Setsuna’s team, is held responsible for the child’s disrespect toward Madara 32.

Territory and Daily Life

  • Clan compound: Most houses have wood-and-bamboo frames, thatched roofs, and packed-dirt roads rather than elaborate fortifications or paved streets 3.
  • Communal meals: The clan eats from a shared kitchen. Madara receives the same gritty brown rice balls as ordinary clan members 3.
  • Resource scarcity: Iron shuriken are valuable enough that children receive lighter bamboo substitutes. Madara’s slight build is also attributed to the era’s limited resources 4 32.
  • East gate: Provides the shortest route toward Hagoromo territory, which lies southeast of the compound 34.
  • Border security: Uchiha sentries guard approaches to their territory, but the clan cannot station troops throughout the disputed Neutral Zone 4 26.
  • Cremation ground: Fallen clan members are cremated; Madara personally ignites the funeral pyres with the Great Fireball Technique 32.

Abilities & Military Practices

Sharingan

The Sharingan is the clan’s coveted kekkei genkai. Its ocular power is closely connected to mental energy, and emotional stimulation can cause it to awaken 3 6.

  • Dynamic vision: Allows Uchiha jonin to track and hunt enemies within the Hagoromo’s shifting barrier 14.
  • Precise detection: Complements the Heavenly Eye’s broad-range sensing by pinpointing concealed enemies 23.
  • Rank benchmark: Izuna states that an ordinary Uchiha generally reaches jonin-level fighting strength upon awakening three tomoe 44.
  • Exceptional early awakening: Setsuna’s one-tomoe Sharingan at roughly five and a half marks him as unusually talented, even among the Uchiha 2 26.
  • Limits and risks: Setsuna recognizes that overuse can cause blindness and begins considering techniques that reduce his dependence on the Sharingan 47.
  • Theft risk: Enemies may capture and torture Uchiha children to force their eyes to awaken before harvesting them 4 6.

Madara possesses an ordinary Mangekyō Sharingan at this point in the story. Although Setsuna knows stronger versions of him from the game, Madara has not yet used Susanoo on the current battlefield 34.

Genjutsu and Yin Release

Uchiha Sharingan genjutsu is described as a manifestation of Yin Release, which centers on spiritual energy 8.

  • The clan excels at genjutsu but still conducts much of its fighting at close range 14.
  • Genjutsu can conceal the true state of Hagoromo territory, making it appear populated, vulnerable, and stocked with food to lure invaders 13 14.
  • The Uchiha do not ordinarily teach genjutsu to a child as young as Setsuna, even after he awakens his Sharingan 10.

Fire Release and Weapons

The Uchiha have studied Fire Release for centuries and traditionally favor direct, overwhelming attacks rather than elaborate deception 13 14.

  • Great Fireball Technique: Used by Madara and Setsuna; Madara also employs it for funeral cremation 32 35.
  • Phoenix Flower Claw Crimson: Tetsukawa coats shuriken in Fire Release chakra and launches them into enemy positions 5.
  • Swordsmanship: Izuna is renowned for powerful sword and Fire Release attacks 22.
  • Shuriken Shadow Clone Technique: An advanced throwing application involving a clone and a surprise attack; proficiency earns additional credit in Uchiha jonin examinations 9.
  • Anti-genjutsu training: Izuna drills his swordsmanship into conditioned reflexes so that he can fight without relying on sight against Tobirama’s Bringer-of-Darkness Technique 34.

Cooperation with the Hagoromo

Setsuna proposes combining Uchiha offensive techniques with the Hagoromo’s spatial powers. Izuna develops the proposal into a battlefield plan and presents it to the Hagoromo leadership 13 14.

Combined tactic Function
Genjutsu layered over the spatial barrier Makes the territory appear undefended and well supplied, encouraging further incursions 13 14.
Teleported Uchiha jonin Places individual attackers at favorable striking positions inside the barrier 14.
Blast Wave Wild Dance Distorts the passage of a Great Fireball to amplify and spread its flames. The Hagoromo leader calculates a theoretical increase of at least fivefold in power and threefold in range 14.
Heavenly Eye–Sharingan reconnaissance Combines wide-area detection with precise targeting to expose concealed troops 23.

In a later operation, Izuna and two Uchiha jonin fight alongside six Hagoromo jonin. The force isolates enemy squads within the five-layer labyrinth, then concentrates its strength against them individually 23.

Training and Child Deployment

  • Supply missions: Children aged approximately five to eight transport supplies toward the Hagoromo front as an introduction to battlefield conditions 4.
  • Weight advantage: Children are chosen partly because some pressure-triggered traps will not activate under their lighter bodies 4.
  • Issued equipment: Each child receives a kunai and six bamboo shuriken; bamboo is lighter and easier for their limited wrist strength to control 4.
  • Identity concealment: Escorts instruct the children not to reveal that they are Uchiha, reducing the risk of capture for their Sharingan 4.
  • Retreat priorities: Toshihi secures the majority of the children and their supplies before returning for Kagami, a decision Setsuna angrily challenges 7.
  • Strategic limits: Madara stresses that individual strength cannot compensate for simultaneous attacks on multiple fronts or the loss of the rear 42.

Setsuna’s Ten Shadows Technique is a personal invention, not an established clan art. Toshihi notes that creating original ninjutsu at his age is rare in Uchiha history 26.

Relationships

  • Hagoromo Clan — Major ally and longstanding marriage partner. The Uchiha provide military support in exchange for low-priced grain; Setsuna’s prospective succession gives the Hagoromo a family connection within Uchiha leadership 9 11.
  • Senju Clan — Ancestral rival, but also a negotiating partner under Madara and Hashirama. Their leaders pursue ceasefires and a long-term territorial separation strategy 22 36 44.
  • Fuma Clan — Attacks a Uchiha child supply group in the Neutral Zone and invades Hagoromo territory. Uchiha fighters help counter its forces 5 6 14 23.
  • Blood Horse Clan — Pressures Hagoromo territory; a sentry is captured during joint Hagoromo–Uchiha reconnaissance 9 23.
  • Sarutobi Clan — Serves as an intermediary in Hagoromo–Senju peace negotiations 22.
  • Daimyo — According to Izuna, deliberately awards disputed land to keep the Uchiha and Senju at odds, since their cooperation would threaten his rule 44.
  • Kurama Setsuko — Requests permission to remain with the Uchiha after Huorong dies saving her. Madara delegates her case to Toshihi, who takes her to register 29 32 33.

Story Role / Major Arcs

Setsuna’s Succession

Setsuna awakens in a clan meeting addressing a recent campaign and the care of war orphans. The elders favor cultivating him as Madara’s successor, but his repeated defiance immediately clashes with clan authority 1 2.

His battlefield performance strengthens his candidacy: he and Kagami kill two adult Fuma chunin during the supply mission. Izuna subsequently plans to announce his succession to reinforce the Hagoromo alliance, though the appointment remains provisional when he discusses it with Setsuna 9 24.

Hagoromo Intervention

The Uchiha support the Hagoromo while trying to prevent their ally from exhausting itself against the Senju, Fuma, and Blood Horse simultaneously. Izuna warns that even the Uchiha’s strongest fighters would struggle to defend against raids from all three clans 9.

After Setsuna challenges Madara’s plan to impose a ceasefire, Madara adopts a less intrusive position. He agrees to hold the Hagoromo rear, leave negotiations to their leadership, and wait for Hashirama to intervene before deciding whether to fight. This preserves Hagoromo sovereignty and gives any Uchiha intervention a stronger justification 34 36.

The Daimyo and Renewed Conflict

The award of disputed Cloudfield threatens to draw the Uchiha back into conflict through their Hagoromo alliance. Setsuna proposes uniting the shinobi clans to overthrow the Daimyo, but Madara emphasizes his duty to protect weaker clan members and consider the wider consequences 44.

Madara and Hashirama privately agree that removing the Daimyo without a sound plan could provoke intervention by other countries. Neither is prepared to act immediately 45.

The Naka River Ambush

When the Five Brothers of Demon River attack the children near the Naka River, Setsuna suspects that Naoki Senju is their real target and Black Zetsu their employer. He reasons that Naoki’s unexplained death would be blamed on the Uchiha, restarting the feud and placing Izuna in danger. This remains Setsuna’s deduction rather than a confirmed revelation in the supplied events 49.

Future Known to Setsuna

These developments belong to the original history Setsuna remembers, not to events already completed in the current Warring States storyline.

  • Madara and Hashirama make peace, establish Konohagakure, and bring the Uchiha into the village 3.
  • The clan subsequently experiences suspicion, exclusion, and political marginalization before being slaughtered in a single night 3 41.
  • Setsuna’s game profile records his failed attempt to assassinate the Second Hokage, Tobirama, with a three-tomoe Sharingan 3.
  • Determined to avoid that future, Setsuna initially resolves to prevent the Senju alliance and Konoha’s founding. After forming a bond with Izuna, he also resolves to prevent Izuna’s death 3 32.
