Life on the Dou Qi Continent

Yao Lao belonged to the Yao Clan, one of the Ancient Eight Clans. Yao Wangui sabotaged his pill-making and framed him, leading to his expulsion. Hu Jiujiu saved him from the clan’s assassins and later invited him to refine pills at the Alchemy Cave on Demon Valley Peak 442.

At eighteen, he entered the Pill Battle Gathering in Sacred Pill City, hoping to study at the Pill Tower. His unconventional refinement techniques attracted Han Shanshan, a seventh-grade high-level alchemist. Their exchanges taught him that alchemy required travel, competition, and discussion—not merely isolated practice—and they became romantically attached 442.

Yao Lao sacrificed his body to protect Han Shanshan from the Bone Spirit Cold Flame. She subsequently restored him but vanished into the river of time. He later founded Starfall Pavilion with Feng Xian and became a celebrated alchemist 442.

Han Feng’s Betrayal

Yao Lao rescued and raised Han Feng as his disciple. Seeking the Flame Mantra, Han Feng poisoned and killed his teacher, obtaining part of the technique. Yao Lao’s soul survived inside the Bone Flame Ring 30 442.

He endured years inside the ring hoping to encounter someone with sufficient soul strength to cultivate the Flame Mantra and eventually forge him a replacement body 5.

Appearance

Yao Lao appears as a kindly elderly man with white hair, a white beard, and deep, wise eyes. His aged features suggest long hardship; in his disembodied state, his body is transparent or illusory 4 7.

Although willing to help financially, he avoids encouraging dependence and expects his disciple to solve difficulties independently 7 16 128.

He values character above cultivation gains. Despite wanting a body, he openly explains the Flame Mantra’s dangers and offers a safer alternative without threatening to withdraw his teaching. When Huo Yuhao refuses to harm a conscious heavenly flame, Yao Lao approves, considering a kindhearted disciple more important than the flame itself 5 79.

His humor is teasing and occasionally mischievous: he enjoys Huo Yuhao’s flattery and takes evident pleasure in introducing grueling training. Beneath that manner, he remains deeply affected by Han Feng’s betrayal and attentive to the burdens Huo Yuhao carries.
