Background / History

Divine Realm War and Fall

The Thunder God suffered severe injuries during a great Divine Realm war hundreds of thousands of years before meeting Tang Xuan. The conflict damaged his essence and killed numerous deities, including God Kings. Tang Xuan suspects that this was the Dragon God War, although the Thunder God does not name it himself 66.

After the war, he pursued an evil Ferocious Beast from the Divine Realm to the lower realm. Too badly wounded to kill it, he sealed it and remained alone to guard it for over a hundred thousand years. As his essence finally ran out, he created the Thunder God Secret Realm to preserve his inheritance and enlightened the ancestors of Lei En's lineage to serve as its guardians. Only a wisp of his consciousness survived his true body's dissolution 66.

Choosing a Successor

No challenger qualified to inherit his godhood before Tang Xuan arrived. When Tang Xuan deliberately stopped his assessment short of the Nine Trials, the Thunder God appeared and demanded an explanation. He repeatedly urged Tang Xuan to reconsider, warning that his remaining consciousness would disappear within another thousand years 65 66.

Tang Xuan instead recommended his father, Tang Hao. After watching Tang Hao fight Lei En without falling into a disadvantage, the Thunder God accepted him as a suitable successor. Tang Hao agreed to the inheritance, and the Thunder God bestowed the Nine Trials, placing a Golden Lightning Mark on his forehead 66.

The Thunder God supervised both father and son's early trials. Tang Xuan's ascent to the thousandth step through physical strength alone changed his opinion: he acknowledged that Tang Xuan might surpass him by following an independent path. He also invited Tang Hao to bring Ah Yin into the realm, allowing her to cultivate while Tang Hao pursued his inheritance 67.

Lei En's Sacrifice

The Thunder God had helped Lei En survive his first two tribulations, but his dwindling reserves could not support him through a third. He therefore supported Lei En's decision to sacrifice himself to Tang Xuan in exchange for eventual resurrection in the Divine Realm 102.

He explained that Lei En's soul would sleep within the resulting soul ring and could later be awakened and given a reconstructed body through divine power. After witnessing the sacrifice, he asked Tang Xuan to congratulate Lei En on his behalf when resurrecting him, knowing that he would not live to see that reunion 102.

The Failing Seal

While Tang Xuan was on Sea God Island, the sealed beast began damaging its confinement. The Thunder God repaired the formation, but recognized that the creature was approaching a breakthrough he would be unable to contain. He placed his hopes in Tang Hao completing his inheritance or Tang Xuan returning with greater strength 118.

By their return, his manifestation had become almost transparent. He identified the prisoner as the Purple-Gold Flood Dragon Demon King, a Divine Realm creature that had reached divine power and was battering the seal daily. He led Tang Xuan and Tang Hao to the failing formation; Tang Xuan entered alone and killed the demon king while Tang Hao prepared for his inheritance 125.

Final Inheritance and Dissolution

During Tang Hao's final inheritance, the Thunder God sensed the revived Evil God, Demon God, and God of Darkness fighting Tang Xuan. He was disturbed that they had returned stronger than before and doubted that a newly ascended Tang Hao alone could overcome them 129.

Once the transfer was complete, he named Tang Hao the Douluo Continent's new Thunder God and instructed him not to tarnish the title. With his mission fulfilled, his consciousness dissolved into a passing breeze. The Thunder God Secret Realm vanished with him, leaving Tang Hao in a forest 131.

Appearance

The Thunder God manifests as an imposing, silver-armored figure whose resolute face commands respect even without anger 66.

  • Height: Over two meters 66.
  • Armor: Silver armor, giving rise to the description “Silver-Armored Giant” 66.
  • Declining manifestation: Becomes increasingly insubstantial as his remaining power is exhausted, appearing close to disappearance before the final inheritance 125 129 131.

Personality

The Thunder God is proud of his divine position and initially interprets Tang Xuan's refusal as an insult. Nevertheless, he restrains his anger, listens to Tang Xuan's reasons, and continues trying to recruit him. His irritation also has a playful side: he privately complains that Tang Xuan makes his trials look too easy and later teases him after his first painful visit to the Thunder Pool 66 67.

He can revise his judgments when confronted with exceptional results. After Tang Xuan reaches the summit of the Thunder God's Path, he admits that refusing his inheritance may have been the right choice. He similarly reconsiders his objections to Tang San inheriting two opposing godhoods after hearing Tang Xuan's proposed solution 67 93.

His concern for Lei En and his long vigil over the sealed demon king persist despite his approaching end. He uses his finite reserves to protect the realm and its occupants, then accepts his dissolution once his successor is established 101 102 118 131.

Abilities & Skills

Lightning Mastery

As the Thunder God, he commands a thunder source that produces lightning far stronger than ordinary natural lightning 67.

  • The Thunder Pool uses this lightning to temper challengers' bodies 67 68.
  • He permits Tang Xuan to obtain the thunder source if he can seize it through his own abilities 67.
  • Tang Xuan eventually extracts it, but his Clear Sky Hammer absorbs most of it before he can finish refining it 68.
  • He protects Lei En through two tribulations, but lacks enough remaining energy to help with the third 102.

Secret Realm Creation and Maintenance

He creates the Thunder God Secret Realm as an inheritance ground and appoints Lei En's ancestral lineage as its guardians 66.

  • Manifests the thousand-step Thunder God's Path and opens a vortex leading to the Thunder Pool 67.
  • Stabilizes the realm against the shock waves from Tang Xuan and Lei En's battle 101.
  • Opens spatial gates and passages to reach the sealed demon king 118 125.
  • Cannot alter the established trials during Tang Xuan's attempt, despite privately wishing to increase their difficulty 67.

Sealing

Although his injuries prevent him from killing the demon king, he confines it for over a hundred thousand years 66.

  • Repairs cracks in the sealing formation through direct expenditure of his remaining power 118.
  • Eventually becomes unable to sustain the seal as the demon king reaches divine power 125.

Healing and Divine Knowledge

He sends spirit power into an injured Tang Xuan to assist his recovery after the fifth trial 99.

  • Assesses Tang Xuan's dangerous Thunder Pool training and confirms that his cultivation is progressing safely 68.
  • Warns that the Sea of Thunder's illusions can trap challengers and damage their spirits 69.
  • Explains the opposition between the Sea God's and Asura God's powers 93.
  • Describes how a sacrificed soul beast can be resurrected by awakening its soul and reconstructing its body with divine power 102.

Limits of His Remaining Consciousness

His surviving consciousness barely retains divine-level power. Any energy it expends is permanently lost, preventing replenishment and restricting how much assistance he can provide 102.

The Nine Trials lead to inheritance of the Thunder God's godhood. Tang Hao's Clear Sky Hammer is compatible with both the divine position and the Thunder God's divine weapon 66.

Relationships

  • Tang Hao — Chosen successor. The Thunder God approves him after his battle with Lei En, guides his trials, and ultimately entrusts him with his divine position 66 67 131.
  • Tang Xuan — Initially his preferred successor, later a challenger whose independent path he respects. Tang Xuan finds him a successor and eliminates the beast he can no longer contain 66 67 125.
  • Lei En — Guardian divine beast and longtime companion. The Thunder God protects him through two tribulations and supports his sacrifice when further protection becomes impossible 65 102.
  • Ah Yin — Invited resident of the secret realm. He allows Tang Hao to bring her there because its environment benefits Soul Beast cultivation 67.
  • Tang San — A lower-level trial participant. The Thunder God initially questions Tang Xuan's plan for him to inherit both the Sea God's and Asura God's positions 92 93.
  • Purple-Gold Flood Dragon Demon King — The Divine Realm beast he pursues and seals. Maintaining its confinement exhausts both his original essence and much of his surviving consciousness 66 118 125.
