Background / History
Cultivation decline and broken engagement
Once regarded as a genius, Xiao Yan spends three years enduring ridicule as his cultivation stagnates at third-stage Dou Qi. The actual cause is Yao Chen’s sleeping soul inside his black ring, rather than a lack of talent 8 9.
Nalan Yanran arrives at the Xiao Clan with Misty Cloud Sect representatives to dissolve their prenatal engagement. Xiao Yan rejects their compensation and refuses to submit to the public humiliation. When Ge Ye directs his Dou Qi pressure at him, Xiao Zhan intervenes and shields him 3 4 5.
Although a divorce letter vents his anger, Xiao Yan initially fears that the confrontation has endangered his father and clan. He even asks Xiao Zhan to surrender him to the sect. Xiao Zhan instead claims to be the reincarnated Desolate Heavenly Emperor, convincing his son that the sect cannot threaten him 6 7.
Yao Chen’s discipleship and restored talent
Learning that Yao Chen caused his decline sends Xiao Yan into a rage, and he demands the old man’s destruction. Xiao Zhan chooses a different form of compensation: Yao Chen must accept Xiao Yan as his disciple and teach him everything he knows. Xiao Yan reluctantly obeys his father 8 9.
Xiao Zhan then bestows the Fire Spirit Bloodline upon him, presenting the process as an awakening of an existing bloodline. Its affinity with the Bone Spirit Cold Flame produces two rapid cultivation advances. Xiao Yan’s resentment toward Yao Chen fades as they settle into a cooperative teacher–disciple relationship 10 11 12.
His restored confidence also changes how he responds to clan politics. When the Three Great Elders demand an apology to the Misty Cloud Sect, Xiao Yan openly mocks their fear. The Great Elder attacks him, but Xiao Zhan intervenes and defeats the elders 13.
Xun’er and departure from Wutan City
Xiao Yan renews his childhood closeness with Xiao Xun’er after recovering his confidence. He initially insists that she is only his little sister, but admits that seeing her with another man would be difficult to accept. Xiao Zhan encourages him to pursue her 15 16.
During a dinner arranged by Xiao Zhan, Xun’er becomes drunk. Xiao Yan’s attempt to escort her to a guest room is misinterpreted by Ling Ying, who attacks after Xiao Yan refuses to hand her over. Xiao Zhan drives Ling Ying away; Xiao Yan then settles Xun’er to sleep and returns to cultivation 17 18 19.
At his father and teacher’s urging, Xiao Yan agrees to leave Wutan City and gain experience through hardship. Before departing, he promises Xun’er that he will return strong enough to seek the Gu Clan’s permission to marry her. He leaves quietly the next morning, avoiding another sorrowful farewell 21 22 23.
Training and the Black Rock City conflict
While training in a cave, Xiao Yan returns to Dou Zhe and chooses the Flame Mantra despite Yao Chen’s warnings about its risks. He subsequently completes his first medicinal preparation and becomes an alchemist under Yao Chen’s guidance 40 43.
In Black Rock City, he hears that Xiao Zhan has unified Wutan City as Xiao City and killed a Misty Cloud Sect Dou Wang elder. When Cai Xu predicts the clan’s destruction, Xiao Yan publicly identifies himself as a Xiao Clan disciple and defends its strength 44 45.
He defeats Cai Xu using Suction Palm and Fire-Blowing Palm. Cai Xu then renews his attack after taking a Strength-Enhancing Pill. Following Cai Xu’s death, Cai Kun threatens to kill Xiao Yan; Xiao Yan calls for his father, who arrives through a Void Gate and kills Cai Kun 46 47 48.
Appearance
- Build: A tall, straight-backed youth; his bloodline awakening makes him noticeably taller and straighter 3 10.
- Face and eyes: Youthful, somewhat handsome features and dark eyes 15 47.
- Clothing: Leaves Wutan City in ordinary clothes, carrying his belongings inside a storage ring rather than visible luggage 23.
Personality
Xiao Yan’s cultivation decline leaves him withdrawn, ashamed, and burdened by guilt toward his father. Xun’er recalls that he had shut others out emotionally during those three years. Discovering that his talent was never the problem—and witnessing Xiao Zhan’s protection—restores his confidence and affection toward those close to him 6 8 15.
He is fiercely protective of his dignity and clan reputation. Nalan Yanran’s humiliation becomes a lasting motivation to cultivate, while insults against the Xiao Clan prompt him to confront Cai Xu. His father’s teaching that “only mediocrities dare not stir up trouble” encourages him to accept challenges rather than retreat 10 11 21 45 46.
Despite his renewed confidence, he accepts Yao Chen’s warnings against reckless advancement. He shows little pride after defeating Cai Xu, viewing the victory as insignificant compared with his ambition to stand among the continent’s greatest geniuses 11 14 47.
Abilities & Skills
Fire Spirit Bloodline
The system-produced bloodline gives Xiao Yan an extraordinary affinity for fire and a direct route to strengthening himself through flame energy 2 10.
- Draws surrounding fire energy toward his body 10.
- Senses the Bone Spirit Cold Flame within Yao Chen 10.
- Allows him to touch that flame without injury and absorb enough energy for consecutive breakthroughs 10 11.
- According to Xiao Zhan, minor mastery could allow him to reach Dou Di; this remains a stated prospect, not an achieved realm 8.
- Rapid growth still requires consolidation, and his affinity does not remove Yao Chen’s insistence on preparations before devouring a heavenly flame 14 40 44.
Flame Mantra
An evolvable cultivation method recommended by Xiao Zhan for its compatibility with the Fire Spirit Bloodline 10 40.
- Requires devouring a heavenly flame for each evolution 40.
- Yao Chen estimates a chance of no more than twenty percent of cultivating it to its peak, while acknowledging that he has never seen anyone practice it 40.
- Xiao Yan chooses it because he trusts his father’s judgment 40.
- No completed evolution or heavenly-flame absorption is documented in the supplied chapters.
Dou Techniques
| Technique | Grade | Demonstrated use |
|---|---|---|
| Fire-Blowing Palm | Mystic Tier | Generates tremendous pushing force; repels Cai Xu’s attacks and sends him crashing across the street 46. |
| Suction Palm | Mystic Tier | Pulls Cai Xu off his feet and toward Xiao Yan, setting up a counterattack 46. |
Alchemy
Yao Chen begins teaching Xiao Yan alchemy after his return to Dou Zhe 43.
- Refines and combines medicinal ingredients in a Medicine Cauldron 43.
- Uses spiritual perception to regulate flame temperature 43.
- Struggles to control separate heating tasks simultaneously, accidentally burning nearly half of one ingredient before recovering 43.
- Successfully produces medicinal paste; no alchemist tier is specified 43.
Equipment / Items
- Black ring — Houses Yao Chen’s surviving soul; his absorption of Xiao Yan’s Dou Qi caused the three-year cultivation decline 8 9.
- Low-grade Storage Ring — Holds all his belongings when he leaves Wutan City 23.
- Father-Relying Teleportation Talisman — Activated with Xiao Yan’s blood, allowing him to summon Xiao Zhan in mortal danger. Used during the confrontation with Cai Kun 22 48.
- Qi Gathering Powder — Consumed to form his Dou Qi vortex and return to Dou Zhe 40.
- Medicine Cauldron — Used for his first successful medicinal preparation 43.
Relationships
- Xiao Zhan — Father, protector, and source of his restored cultivation prospects. Xiao Yan believes his claim to be a reincarnated Immortal Emperor and hopes to fight beside him in the Great Thousand World 7 9 11.
- Yao Chen / Yao Lao — Teacher and former cause of his cultivation decline. Initial hostility gives way to gratitude and cooperation as Yao Chen teaches him and supplies flame energy for training 8 9 11 43.
- Xiao Xun’er — Childhood companion and romantic partner. Xiao Yan promises to become strong enough to seek her hand from the Gu Clan 15 16 22 23.
- Xiao Ding and Xiao Li — Older brothers remembered with affection. Xiao Zhan asks him to visit their Mo Tie mercenary company in Stone Desert City if he has the opportunity 23.
- Nalan Yanran — Former fiancée whose public attempt to end their engagement drives his determination to prove himself 3 4 10 22.
- Ling Ying — Xun’er’s protector, who attacks Xiao Yan after misinterpreting his attempt to help the drunken Xun’er to bed 18.
- Cai Xu and Cai Kun — Black Rock City enemies. Xiao Yan defeats Cai Xu; Cai Kun’s subsequent threat forces him to summon Xiao Zhan 46 47 48.
Story Role
- Driver of Xiao Zhan’s system growth: Xiao Yan’s confrontations with Ge Ye and Ling Ying trigger cultivation increases for his father—not for Xiao Yan himself 4 18.
- Independent trouble requirement: The father-backing function requires Xiao Yan to provoke enemies naturally; deliberate instigation by Xiao Zhan does not qualify 20 42.
- Unaware beneficiary: Xiao Yan interprets his father’s system-backed feats as evidence of the Desolate Heavenly Emperor identity 7 9 19.
