Doggy had helped Zheng Qing catch "prey" twice.
The first had been a frog. Zheng Qing had kicked a pebble and hit a frog, and Doggy had seen what it looked like. The second had been Professor Trude. The professor had suspended Doggy from a tree with magic, so he had seen what the professor looked like, too.
Therefore, if Zheng Qing wanted Doggy to help find the missing Black Goat or the Faceless Demon, he first had to let him know what he was looking for.
Early the next morning, when Zheng Qing got up to do his morning exercises, he drew back his bed curtains and saw Doggy sitting at the head of his bed, panting with his tongue out. He had not brought Professor Trude back again.
He smiled, rubbed Doggy's head, and praised him:
"Good job!"
Doggy's tail wagged even more enthusiastically.
"Has he made himself at home in our dorm?" For once, Fatty had opened his eyes early in the morning. He grumbled groggily, "Has he paid for his lodging?"
Tuantuan let out a long, rumbling purr.
"You could have him catch pheasants for you," Zheng Qing suggested cheerfully, casually sticking a Talisman of Evil Warding onto Doggy. Watching a wisp of blue smoke rise from the talisman paper in the dawn light, he added, "...As for where he catches them, you'll have to figure that out yourself."
Pheasants were certainly not native to the island, and any on school grounds were more likely to be some student's pets.
