In ancient legends of the Wizarding World, the Wild Hunt referred to a group of wizards so obsessed with hunting demons that they lost themselves in darkness.
They roamed the edges of the world, banners and wands in hand, astride Night Steeds. They traveled with the mist; the cold wind was their comrade, frost their horn, and death their only pursuit.
Driven mad by the hunt, they hunted in madness. Thus, they were called the Wild Hunt.
Yet in reality, to the residents of Puji Island, the Wild Hunt was the endless nightmare of the Silent Forest. They were formed from the souls of wizards lost within the Silent Forest. Normally, they slept beneath the forest's humus layer. Only when the black tide surged would they mount skeletal horses, don tattered robes, and rush ahead of the hungry Magical Creatures to batter the magical defenses built by the Living People of Beta Town, chasing prey they would never catch.
Because they had not completely fallen into darkness, First University could not erase them from this world with purification magic. Because their minds were muddled, they could not transform into members of the Ghost Clan and join the ranks of the Creatures of the Night. Because they had already lost their vitality, they were not accepted by the Magical Creatures of the Silent Forest.
They could only bear the identity of outsiders and charge toward Beta Town before every black tide, like moths flying into flame.
