"Life inside the city is certainly good, but I still prefer living outside," Luo Yan said with a smile.
"Is that a refusal? Several important figures think very highly of you. If they heard your answer, they would surely be furious," the commander said with a smile.
"Everyone says the difference between inside and outside the city is like heaven and earth. Why don't you want to go inside?"
Luo Yan stared intently at the commander and asked in return, "Aren't you staying outside too? Inside the city, everyone schemes against one another. It's nowhere near as free as life out here."
The commander smiled.
That was indeed why he had remained outside the city and become commander of the Thirty-Seventh Military Camp.
Inside the city had its advantages, but outside had its freedom.
Emperor Pass was a city with a long history. Its powers were tangled together like twisted roots and branches. Though experts gathered there like clouds, they belonged to different factions and constantly schemed against one another.
Most legion commanders and officers had stayed in the camps outside because they disliked the intrigue within the city. Things were much simpler here.
"By my reckoning, you've been outside long enough to count as a veteran. Have you ever been to the Great Gobi?" the commander asked.
Luo Yan shook his head. "I've heard there are countless hidden treasures there, endless opportunities, all kinds of heaven-defying divine medicines, lost divine weapons and precious artifacts, and the bones of heavenly beasts from ancient times that can be used to forge all kinds of divine artifacts.
"I've never been, but I've heard the Great Gobi holds countless treasures that fill so many cultivators with longing and reckless excitement."
The commander said, "Head to the Great Gobi in two months!"
"Yes, Commander!"
