"If I sleep here, where are you sleeping?"
Brad watched as Dick led him to an apartment building in Gotham and tossed him the keys.
Dick waved a hand dismissively, indicating that he could sneak over to his girlfriend's place to sleep.
He really missed Barbara.
But Brad noticed that Dick looked a little forlorn when he mentioned Barbara.
There seemed to be some lingering regret involved, though it wasn't about their relationship.
Of course, that was none of Brad's business. He certainly wasn't going to follow Dick to his girlfriend's home on the very first day they'd met.
Dick said goodbye to Brad and wandered the streets of Gotham alone, his hands in his pockets. Memories seemed to flicker in his eyes, and before he knew it, he had reached the building where Gordon, the current commissioner of the Gotham Police Department, lived.
He looked up at a dark window on the third floor. He knew it belonged to Barbara's room, and with his skills, climbing up would be easy.
Yet despite being so close, Dick hesitated. He wasn't afraid Commissioner Gordon would chase him away with a broom. He simply didn't know how to face Barbara after what had happened.
Should I go back to Wayne Manor instead? Alfred would definitely have a room ready for me.
Dick paced back and forth a few times, rubbed his hands together, then took a short running start and leaped. Catching a protrusion on the wall, he quickly climbed up to the outside of the third floor.
The sight inside the window nearly startled him into falling back down.
It was the middle of the night, but Barbara wasn't asleep at all. She sat in her wheelchair facing the window, watching him silently.
