| Stage / Realm / Level | Chapter | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Established Kryptonian strength | 198 268 | Introduced as reputedly the planet’s strongest superhero. Later states that he could bench-press Earth even before being strengthened. |
| Unrestrained combat output | 207 | Releases progressively greater strength against Brad’s mechanical army, destroying one billion Supreme Terminators in ten minutes. His gravitational effects begin tearing spatial barriers as he approaches becoming a miniature black hole. |
| Approximately seventh training stage | 245 | Has not yet advanced beyond roughly the seventh stage of Brad’s twelve-stage training ground. His record against the Nanotech Divine Body is forty-eight victories and forty-nine defeats. |
| Seventh stage cleared | 249 | Clears the seventh stage. His sharper senses allow him to thwart Luthor’s secret Superman-cloning project. |
| Refined control through virtual combat | 252 | Accumulates more battles in a year than he could have fought in a thousand years on Earth. Can casually wield star-extinguishing strength and switch immediately from ordinary activity to attacks capable of tearing open a black hole. |
| Expanded perception | 260 261 | His trained X-ray vision is no longer blocked by lead. Subsequently perceives a Kryptonian captain’s past through electromagnetic waves. |
| Shazam-enhanced Superman | 297 | Receives the six gods’ power from Shazam. The combination makes him feel stronger than ever, but remains insufficient to enter the battle in the Multiversal In-Between. |
| Thought Deity Armor participation | 297 | First Batman releases Zansha, who absorbs the enhanced Superman’s powers. The resulting colossal armor enters the Multiversal In-Between and forcibly separates Perpetua and the Ultimate Lifeform. |
| Thought Armor reinforced by possible future selves | 298 | Golden Superman and God of Strength Superman join the armor after Superman’s hesitation and Zansha’s power absorption destabilize it. Their stable consciousnesses restore its solidity. |
Background / History
Clark came to Earth following Krypton’s destruction and grew up on a farm in Kansas. His scientist father survived only in recorded projections that Clark could access through the Fortress of Solitude. His upbringing did not lead him into scientific work, although he admits that inheriting Krypton’s technology might otherwise have encouraged him to become a scientist 199 233 288.
Clark identifies with both Earth and Krypton. He takes pride in historical Kryptonian ideals of science, selfless sharing, and peace, while repeatedly searching for surviving members of his species through the Fortress’s technology 259 261.
Cosmological origin of the Superman concept
- First Batman’s account identifies Superman as the first information-rich life born from energy accumulated by the earliest DC universe barrier 288.
- Superman initially existed as a concept; Krypton, its destruction, his escape, and his arrival on Earth were added as that universe developed 288.
- A successor universe established the Solar System’s star as the source of his capacity for limitless growth 288.
- Repeated conflicts between humanity and an overwhelmingly powerful Superman led a later universe to create the Batman concept as a human counterweight 288.
Appearance
- Heroic costume: A blue suit, red cape, and large S-shaped chest emblem. The emblem is recognized by Kryptonians as the crest of the House of El 233 260.
- Civilian disguise: As Clark, he hunches, wears clothes two sizes too large, and raises his voice an octave 253.
- Shazam-enhanced costume: Red-and-gold magical patterns spread across his blue uniform, while his chest emblem becomes an enormous energy lightning bolt with an S at its center 297.
Personality
Superman habitually assumes strangers are good until given reason to doubt them. Brad’s refugee story earns his sympathy partly because Clark understands being an outsider himself. Nevertheless, he distinguishes personal hospitality from deciding whether Earth should permanently accept a powerful newcomer 199.
His compassion governs his fighting style. He normally opens with a restrained punch, calculates how much force his opponent can survive, and maintains a nonlethal level of output. This caution can leave him vulnerable or frustrate allies who expect him to finish a fight quickly 206 252.
Beneath that restraint, Clark enjoys combat when nobody else is endangered. Brad’s virtual arenas give him an opportunity to release strength he had suppressed since adulthood. Even after extensive training, he remains the same cheerful “farm boy” rather than adopting the harsher personality produced by some of Brad’s mental trials 207 208 252.
His kindness is not unconditional forgiveness. Confronted with New Krypton’s massacres, he rejects shared ancestry as an excuse and sharply distinguishes desperate survival from deliberate genocide. Brad is surprised by the clarity with which Clark exposes Queen Kara’s hatred beneath her humanitarian justifications 260 264.
Abilities & Skills
Solar-Powered Kryptonian Physiology
His genes convert sunlight into extraordinary physical power and support a broad range of superhuman abilities 198.
- Brad obtains more than thirty major and minor powers by copying his genes 198.
- His physiology includes strength, durability, speed, stamina, gravity manipulation, slight telepathy, and a bio-electric aura 198 206.
- Brad discovers that Superman’s evolution exceeds that of ordinary New Kryptonians, including traits outside the human visual spectrum that Clark normally conceals 261.
- His pre-enhancement strength was already sufficient to bench-press Earth 268.
Strength, Speed, and Combat Control
Superman’s greatest practical limitation is often how much force he permits himself to use.
- Destroys one billion Supreme Terminators in ten minutes once he stops restraining himself 207.
- Generates gravitational disturbances capable of tearing spatial barriers at high output 207.
- Develops enough control through training to wield star-extinguishing force effortlessly and produce attacks that tear open black holes 252.
- Overwhelms New Kryptonian warriors in single exchanges while deliberately limiting collateral damage 261.
- His durability compensates for inferior technique against the Nanotech Divine Body, allowing him to repeatedly recover from knockdowns 245.
Superhuman Senses and Superbrain
Clark combines planetary-scale perception with exceptionally rapid analysis.
- Detects the identical magnetic field produced when Brad copies his Kryptonian genes 199.
- Assesses testimony through multiple sensory indicators, including emotional and physiological responses 199.
- Uses microscopic scrutiny to identify subtle signs of Carl Luthor’s disturbed condition; another Superman-level being can defeat this scrutiny through precise bodily control 233.
- Gains X-ray vision that can penetrate lead after Brad’s training 260.
- Reads a New Kryptonian captain’s past through a flood of electromagnetic waves 261.
- Despite his superbrain, he can miss social cues; his enthusiastic congratulations over Brad’s family embarrass Brad rather than reassuring him 238.
Bio-Electric Aura and Gravity Manipulation
His aura supports both physical power and battlefield control.
- Restricts approaching New Kryptonian enemies so that he only has to engage a few at a time 261.
- Negates the molecular-freezing fluctuations Brad uses to immobilize the surrounding battlefield 262.
- At full output, could scour New Krypton’s entire surface—an option Clark refuses because of the planet and its innocent inhabitants 262.
Heat Vision and Freezing Breath
- Heat Vision: Uses directed energy from his eyes; against Brad, he cuts off the beam immediately after it hits to avoid excessive damage 206.
- Freezing Breath: One of the Kryptonian abilities Brad explicitly reproduces when demonstrating a comparable mutant-based power set 206.
Weaknesses and Limits
- Kryptonite: Brief exposure during the fight with Brad weakens his legs enough that he needs Batman’s armor for support 206.
- Red-star radiation: Unlike six other Supermen who are immediately reduced to ordinary-human strength, Earth One’s Superman endures Brad’s simulated red-star light for ten minutes 263.
- Magical incapacitation: Falls asleep under the spell affecting the heroes in the dream-trapped Gotham 235.
- Exhaustion: Virtual battles still tire him physically, and the war against Nekron produces unprecedented fatigue 208 268.
- Superior opponents: Queen Kara’s star-enhanced power overwhelms him before he can react; Brad intervenes when she nearly strangles him 264.
- Multiversal scale: Even with Shazam’s added divine power, he cannot independently approach Perpetua’s battle with the Ultimate Lifeform 297.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Kryptonian battle suit — Torn apart during the fight against Brad’s army, then restored when the virtual battlefield dissolves 207 208.
- Fortress of Solitude — Houses Kryptonian technology, historical projections, and a crystal-based supercomputer. Brad accesses the computer using simulated Superman genes 199 200 233.
- Brad’s virtual training ground — Provides twelve stages based on Brad’s past selves and enough energy to withstand Superman’s full strength 245.
- Thought Deity Armor — A colossal construct summoned through Superman and Zansha. It acts on Superman’s final conscious command when neither participant is consciously piloting it 297 298.
Relationships
- Brad — Refugee guest, temporary opponent, and later ally and trainer. Clark shelters him in the Fortress, fights him over his dealings with Gotham criminals, and eventually defends him against Batman’s blanket distrust 199 205 252 278.
- Batman / Bruce Wayne — Initially a strained ally after a kryptonite-assisted confrontation. Their conflict includes Bruce’s fear that Superman’s interventions will undermine human agency; they later become close comrades, although Bruce continues surveillance 203 231 278.
- Lois Lane — A reporter toward whom Clark has romantic interest. The younger Clark has not yet won her over, while his Injustice counterpart married her 253 255.
- Kara — His older cousin and a surviving Kryptonian studying at the Future Superhero Academy. He worries about her after the Fortress loses its connection to the academy 297.
- Queen Kara of New Krypton — A parallel-universe cousin who killed her own universe’s Superman and led widespread conquests. Clark condemns her actions despite their shared ancestry 263 264.
- Carl Luthor — A hybrid created from another universe’s Superman and Luthor. Clark denies being his father but offers him affection and a home; Carl rejects the offer and attacks him 232 233.
- Hal Jordan — Justice League teammate. Clark saves him from Carl Luthor and prioritizes getting him medical treatment over pursuing Carl 233.
- Shazam / Billy Batson — Teammate who voluntarily transfers the six gods’ power to him during the multiversal crisis 297.
- First Batman — Directs the Shazam enhancement and releases Zansha as part of the plan that produces the Thought Deity Armor 297.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Brad’s Arrival and Shelter
Superman investigates a concentrated lightning phenomenon and encounters the naked Brad emerging from it. When Brad immediately copies his genes, Clark becomes wary of the danger posed by an uncontrolled Superman-level visitor. Brad relinquishes the copied powers and explains his refugee status, persuading Clark to offer temporary shelter in the Fortress of Solitude 198 199.
Brad leaves voluntarily to avoid the temptation of stealing Kryptonian technology. Superman finds his farewell message and chooses not to search for him 200.
Gotham Confrontation and Virtual Battle
Clark visits Gotham hoping to repair his relationship with Batman, only to learn that Brad has sold Joker technology capable of cutting a target off from an external power source. He ultimately sides with Batman when Brad demands that he choose between them 205.
Inside Brad’s isolated battlefield, Superman initially holds back, then releases increasing strength against Brad and his mechanical army. The arena’s restoration leaves everyone’s equipment intact, and Clark recognizes its value as somewhere he can fight freely without destroying the real world 206 207 208.
Justice League Formation and Training
Barry summons Superman and other heroes to Gotham to help an older Flash from another Earth. Their gathering becomes an early step toward the Justice League, and the heroes capture Albert Swan during his attempted attack 230.
On another Earth, Clark’s attempt to reach Carl Luthor through compassion fails. He chooses to care for the injured Hal instead of chasing Carl and later protests Oliver Queen’s harsh treatment of the boy 233 234.
Brad’s training subsequently sharpens Clark’s senses, improves his control, and allows him to fight without constantly protecting a fragile Earth. Clearing the seventh stage also helps him stop Luthor’s cloning scheme 245 249 252.
Multiversal Alliance and New Krypton
Clark supports cooperation with visiting parallel-world factions, expressing no personal hostility toward the Justice Lords despite rejecting their system for his own world 252.
The campaign against New Krypton tests his loyalties more directly. After seeing the remains of Earth’s population beneath its splendid cities, he repudiates the conquerors as alien invaders and fights their armies without destroying the planet. He then confronts Queen Kara, exposing the hatred behind her claim to be preserving Kryptonian civilization 260 261 262 264.
Nekron and the Thought Deity Armor
During the war against Nekron, Supermen from several universes rotate through combat with White Lantern emblems while mechanical allies protect those who need to recover. Clark experiences exhaustion unlike anything he has previously felt 268.
Later, First Batman combines Clark’s powers with Shazam’s and brings Zansha into the process that summons the Thought Deity Armor. The armor restrains the Ultimate Lifeform and Perpetua, but Perpetua exploits Earth’s terrified pleas to awaken Clark’s hesitation. Zansha’s simultaneous awakening further weakens him by absorbing his powers, until two possible future Supermen reinforce the construct 297 298.
Alternate Counterparts
| Counterpart | Distinguishing facts |
|---|---|
| Lord Superman | Leads the Justice Lords and advocates extending their order to parallel worlds. Older and more experienced than an ordinary Superman 249 269. |
| Injustice Superman | Becomes a tyrant after killing Lois and their unborn child, then Joker. Joins the multiversal alliance under Brad’s overwhelming pressure 250 252. |
| Ultraman | Crime Syndicate leader whose strength comes from kryptonite. Killed by Green Arrow’s micro-black-hole arrow 249. |
| New Krypton’s Superman | Defends Earth against the Kryptonian conquest. Kara’s ambush and poisoning contribute to his death; she later analyzes his corpse to improve her own genes 260 263. |
| Black Lantern Superman | Fights for Nekron’s Black Lantern Legion and is eventually worn away by Brad’s mechanical swarm 268. |
| Golden Superman | A possible future self who commands the fifth dimension and helps stabilize the Thought Armor 298. |
| God of Strength Superman | A possible future self with a translucent white body and black lines; joins Golden Superman in reinforcing the armor 298. |
Notable Quotes
“You can call me Superman, or use my real name, Clark Kent. I was once an outsider to this world, just like you.” 199
“Sins can’t be erased by forgetting them.” 260
“I’m an Earthling, and I’m also Clark. I’ve come to take revenge on you.” 261
Trivia
- Brad’s Superman Armor is not Clark’s costume. It reproduces his powers through a connection to his information density, and Oliver Queen uses it against Carl Luthor 219 233.
- Brad theorizes that deepening that connection could reverse its function and suppress Superman himself; this is presented as a technological possibility, not an accomplished defeat 219.
- Clark declines Brad’s Nine-Ring Mental Training Trial, preferring powerful virtual opponents as his means of improvement 252.
