Background / History

Strategic Scientific Reserve

Howard recognized Brad’s computing research as potentially more than a century ahead of its time. He considered Brad an irreplaceable scientist whose advances could make many of his own unrealized ideas achievable 6.

Concerned that Dr. Zola would lead Brad astray, Howard persuaded Peggy Carter to separate them, resulting in Brad’s transfer to Canada. The decision unwittingly served their plans: Brad and Zola had deliberately provoked the separation so Brad could establish a Hydra research base away from New York. Howard had consistently rejected Zola’s overtures toward Hydra, making him a target for elimination 6.

Reconciliation with Brad

During Maria’s pregnancy, Howard invited Brad to a gathering at his mansion. Brad brought an advanced universal joint as a gift for the unborn child. Howard immediately recognized its mechanical and commercial value and initially tried to return it 16 17.

After the gathering, Howard apologized for the Canadian transfer and questioned whether Brad had embedded backdoors in technology distributed worldwide. Brad denied needing backdoors and described ambitions beyond the universe. Howard accepted his explanation, encouraged his work, and again warned him against Zola 18.

Zola subsequently plotted to assassinate Howard using the Winter Soldier. Brad intercepted the assassin’s aircraft and disabled his metal arm, preventing the attack. The Strategic Scientific Reserve exposed the plot and imprisoned Zola 19.

Saving Arno

Howard’s first son was born with a severe genetic disorder that prevented independent breathing. Howard designed life-support equipment, resigned as chief scientist, and searched for help from people with unusual abilities. His investigations extended to magic, witchcraft, and Eastern qi cultivation 20.

Charles and Erik brought him to the mutant school. Mr. M temporarily alleviated Arno’s condition but could not repair the underlying genetic disorder. Howard then accepted Brad’s offer of help and brought his son to Canada 20.

Howard and Brad worked together for six months to develop the Iron Lung System, which was successfully implanted in Arno’s chest with only mild rejection. When Brad declined Stark Industries shares as payment, Howard converted their value into funding for the Maria Foundation, with Brad and Arno as its actual joint owners 20.

The collaboration made Brad a close friend of the Stark family and gave him access to Howard’s research notes, including his Tesseract data 21.

Arno’s Godfather and the Timeline Branch

Howard wanted Brad to guide the son who would inherit his knowledge and wealth. He arranged for Obadiah to help furnish and staff Brad’s new estate, then visited with Maria and Arno for the godfather ceremony 40.

During his unconventional baptism, Brad granted Arno access to his creations second only to his own. The ceremony triggered a temporal anomaly that drew the Time Variance Authority’s attention 40 41.

TVA records identified Arno’s birth as an earlier temporal disturbance. Their expected sequence had Howard complete the Iron Lung System when Arno was ten years old, interfering with Tony’s normal birth. Instead, Brad’s involvement allowed Arno to receive it at ten months. The TVA planned to erase the resulting Universe 9527-2 branch; Howard is not shown learning of that investigation 41.

Appearance

Howard visibly ages during his work at the Strategic Scientific Reserve, with gray hairs appearing before Arno’s birth. His son’s illness then makes him seem years older almost overnight 16 20.

Personality

His scientific ambition is tempered by moral principles and philosophical convictions; Brad explicitly distinguishes him from a researcher concerned only with results. Howard’s suspicion of Zola is justified, although his confidence that he could contain Zola within the Strategic Scientific Reserve causes him to underestimate the threat 6 7.

Arno’s illness breaks through Howard’s usual pride. Once a staunch scientific materialist, he becomes willing to seek supernatural help and humble himself before strangers to save his son. His gratitude toward Brad develops into lasting trust, shared research, and a place for Brad within his family 20 21 40.

Howard’s train of thought is difficult for most researchers to follow. Even Brad, equipped with extensive advanced knowledge, sometimes needs time to understand his sudden insights 20.
