Background / History
Rivalry with Alfred and Vanessa Hans
According to Alfred, Maroni resented him because his schemes and attempts to frame Alfred repeatedly failed. After Alfred left the gang, Maroni pursued the woman Alfred loved: Vanessa Hans, a celebrated Gotham Theater performer. Maroni later abandoned Vanessa while she was pregnant 49.
Years afterward, Maroni contacted their son, William, to recruit him for a family mission. He acknowledged abandoning William and his mother, but justified using his son by saying that both he and the family needed him. He promised to recognize William under the Maroni surname once the mission was complete 6.
Planting William in the Police Department
Maroni intended to exploit Batman’s disappearance to return to Gotham and install a political puppet. William’s assignment was to work inside the police department and gather evidence of Commissioner Norman Steele’s bribery and financial dealings with Carmine Falcone 8.
When Norman ordered William to steal documents from Falcone’s estate, Maroni instructed him to obtain the document for the family and tell Norman that the operation had failed. William questioned the danger, prompting Maroni to burn his palm as a warning against challenging orders 17 18.
At the same meeting, Maroni threatened William’s companion Stuart with a gold-plated Winchester. William stood between them and refused to move, earning Maroni’s unexpected admiration. Maroni allowed Stuart to remain with William, but warned that a subordinate’s loyalty mattered as much as his ability 19.
Failed Mission and Confrontation
The document theft was a loyalty test arranged by Norman and Falcone. William returned the unopened envelope to Norman rather than delivering it to Maroni, securing Norman’s trust 23 26.
Maroni confronted William at his apartment, accused him of betraying the family, and struck his forehead with his gun. William survived by openly resisting him while still asserting their blood relationship. Maroni eventually backed down, agreeing to require regular weekly reports without imposing further unexpected assignments 26 27.
Choosing a New Heir
William later reported that Falcone was dead and claimed credit for arranging the apparent killing through Stuart. In reality, Falcone had collapsed before Stuart acted. Maroni checked Falcone’s absence from a gathering, accepted the account, and welcomed William back into the family 51.
William’s apparent initiative led Maroni to reconsider his succession plans. He had spent more than ten years preparing Charloes, who knew the family’s distribution channels and business partners, but increasingly saw William as the more capable candidate 51.
Maroni subjected William to another loyalty test involving abduction, physical assault, and a gun pressed to his head. After William refused to confess to the supposed plot against Falcone, Maroni killed both interrogators to conceal the test and prevent unrest among his own men 53.
He then gave William full authority to negotiate with Rupert Thorne at Dixon Docks. William offered increased orders in exchange for better terms rather than relying solely on threats. Maroni admired the approach and became nearly certain that William should succeed him 53 54.
War Against the Falcone Family
Following William’s recommendation to attack immediately, Maroni launched coordinated assaults on Falcone outposts. His forces used heavily armed advance teams, cleaners who removed bodies and evidence, and hired protesters who obstructed responding police 54 55.
The campaign added three districts and more than doubled Maroni’s territory. He placed William in overall charge, with Roman Sionis exercising temporary authority while William retained his police position 55.
| Newly acquired holdings | Number |
|---|---|
| Large bars | 46 55 |
| Nightclubs | 12 55 |
| Brothels | 33 55 |
| Illegal smuggling companies | 12 55 |
| Casinos | 4 55 |
| Small drug laboratories | 3 55 |
Maroni retained existing business operators because the family lacked enough personnel to replace them. Former Falcone loyalists were offered survival if they burned off the Roman’s tattoo and desecrated Falcone’s photograph; those who refused were to be taken to Dixon Docks 55.
During the campaign, Charloes exposed William’s position as a police mole within earshot of two bodyguards. Maroni shot both guards and beat Charloes with his belt to punish the disclosure 55.
Mayoral Sponsorship and Charloes’s Defeat
William’s changes to the newly acquired bars sharply increased liquor consumption and profits. Maroni celebrated by filling an enormous bathtub in his private room with the additional earnings 68.
Despite this success, Maroni initially rejected William’s proposal to sponsor mayoral candidate Raka Jon, also called Laka. He considered a candidate from the slums, without influential connections, a waste of money 68 69.
After Charloes accused William of cooperating with Alfred, Maroni again threatened to shoot William. An investigation by Pang Lai confirmed William’s alibi, which William had established using an AI Clone. Maroni allowed William to punish Charloes and offered to sponsor Raka as compensation for the accusation 70 71.
Charloes was subsequently sent to manage a belt factory. Maroni’s organization contacted Laka, and Pang Lai used violence and threats to overcome the candidate’s refusal to accept gang funding 73 74.
Threat of a Falcone Counterattack
Oswald, whom Maroni had previously demoted and intended to eliminate, became an adviser to Alberto Falcone. After Laka’s televised suicide created an opening for widespread unrest, Oswald offered to help Alberto destroy the Maroni Family in exchange for cash and heavy weapons 19 90.
During the ensuing crisis, Pang Lai attempted to retrieve William from the damaged police station, arguing that the Glacier Club had superior defenses and firepower. Oswald later directed Alberto and the Revenge squad toward an attack on the club; the supplied account does not establish the outcome 93 95.
Appearance
- Build: Short, stocky, and solidly built, with his neck almost merging into his shoulders 18.
- Ears: Prominent cauliflower ears, described as the result of prolonged fighting or boxing-related damage 18.
- Tattoo: A rose on the inside of his wrist 18.
- Voice: Relaxed and raspy over the telephone, with the sound attributed to age 18.
- Habits: Smokes cigars and a hookah; drinks wine and champagne in his club office 18 19 51 55.
Personality
Maroni combines intimidation with calculated displays of care. After burning William’s hand, he personally cleans and bandages it; after violent confrontations, he can soften his tone without apologizing. Both his family and his subordinates are subject to his need for control 18 27.
His expectations of his children are contradictory. He demands obedience but despises the submissiveness that his abuse has fostered in Charloes. What he actually wants is a successor capable of surviving the same brutal streets he did, making William’s resistance more attractive than compliance 27 51.
Maroni values loyalty but treats competence as a potential threat. He recognizes Oswald’s talent while planning to dispose of him, and Roman Sionis maintains his favor by pretending to be less capable than he really is 19 59.
His pride also limits his judgment. Even after his affection for William reaches its maximum, he dismisses the proposal to fund Raka because he cannot respect the candidate’s background or prospects. Conversely, he can recognize practical business talent when William demonstrates it directly 54 69.
