Appearance
- Yellow fur, a round head, and shiny black eyes; initially introduced as a plump puppy small enough for Yang Ge to carry 5.
- Sleek, glossy coat and a large, fluffy tail in later appearances 21.
- Expressive ears and posture: flattens his ears when greeting familiar people and plants his paws apart when confronting intruders 20 29 45.
- Increasing weight: both Shopkeeper Liu and Yang Ge’s elderly rescuer remark that he has grown fatter 22 45.
Personality
Little Yellow is affectionate toward Yang Ge, following him closely, seeking head rubs, and licking his face. His quiet company helps ease Yang Ge’s anxiety before the Bian River mission, and Yang Ge later turns to him while questioning his decision to become an official 13 18 46.
He is fiercely possessive of his home and its contents. Visitors bringing things receive enthusiastic greetings, while those taking anything away risk being bitten unless Yang Ge intervenes. He remembers such visitors and barks at them again on their next visit; after Wang Dali takes two cornmeal buns intended for him, he protests at the gate for a quarter of an hour 20.
Food and outings readily excite him. He fetches his leash when Yang Ge announces a trip, but immediately loses enthusiasm at the sight of the muzzle. Despite his aggressive watchdog behavior, he becomes frightened when neighborhood children grab his tail and tries to pull Yang Ge away 21. His appetite also leads him to chase Yang Ge for the remaining Mid-Autumn mooncakes 28.

Little Yellow repeatedly notices visitors or danger before Yang Ge responds.
- Raises his head, pricks his ears, and watches the gate seconds before Fang Ke knocks 13.
- Detects something near their home immediately before the Gray-Clad Man attacks Yang Ge 29.
- Interrupts play to stare warily at the gate before another visit from Fang Ke 46.
Guarding and Defensive Behavior
He challenges intruders through barking, snarling, and attempts to bite.
- Barks furiously when Liu Mang pounds on the courtyard gate and reacts to Shen Fa entering over the wall 12.
- Charges back in front of Yang Ge after being pulled away from the Gray-Clad Man, baring his fangs at the attacker 29.
- Yang Ge restrains or secures him during dangerous encounters; no martial cultivation or supernatural ability is documented 13 29.
Equipment / Items
- Leash — Used on outings; Little Yellow retrieves it himself when invited outside. Yang Ge also uses it to pull him away from an attack and tie him to a hitching post 21 29.
- Muzzle — Worn outside so children will not be afraid of him, though he dislikes putting it on 21 29.
- Large food bowl — Used for shared meals with Yang Ge; he pushes it toward Yang Ge with a front paw after finishing his noodles and broth 26.
Relationships
- Yang Ge — Owner and primary companion. Yang Ge calls him his son and himself “Daddy,” shares meals with him, and confides his worries to him 18 21 26.
- Shopkeeper Liu — A beloved visitor who calls himself “Grandpa,” cuddles Little Yellow, and brings him an egg. Little Yellow’s enthusiastic greeting is distinctive enough for Yang Ge to recognize Liu’s arrival before opening the gate 22 28.
- Shen Fa — An unwelcome wall-climbing visitor. Little Yellow reacts defensively to his entry and later bristles while Shen Fa teases him 12 16.
- Wang Dali — Earns Little Yellow’s anger by taking two buns reserved for the dog 20.
- Fang Ke — Receives an eager welcome when carrying supplies, though Little Yellow remains alert to his arrivals 20 46.
- Yang Ge’s elderly rescuer — Greeted with excited circling and tail-wagging during a winter visit; the old man teasingly threatens to put the increasingly fat dog in a stew pot 45.
History
Yang Ge brings Little Yellow to his newly rented courtyard after the trouble at the Welcome Inn. The puppy initially retreats to his feet, frightened by the unfamiliar surroundings, and Yang Ge gently reassures him that this is now his home. That night, Shen Fa enters without waking Yang Ge and moves Little Yellow from the bedroom into the courtyard 5 6.
Little Yellow grows up in the small front courtyard. When Yang Ge opens the adjoining property, he races joyfully through the newly accessible space. During the Mid-Autumn Festival, the two share a mooncake before turning the remaining cakes into a playful chase 26 28.
On the following morning, Little Yellow accompanies Yang Ge to watch the Liu family’s betrothal procession. Returning home, he alerts Yang Ge just before an attack by a member of the Five Ghosts of Yan Yun and tries to stand between them. After the confrontation ends, Yang Ge takes him to the Guard recruits’ dining hall and gives him a roast leg of lamb. Back home, Little Yellow barks furiously at the ransacked courtyard before Yang Ge shuts him indoors to attempt his breakthrough 29 30.
During winter, he accompanies Yang Ge to the elderly rescuer’s home and shares a fish-and-mutton meal. His later appearance returns to their familiar domestic routine: greeting Yang Ge, playing together, and watching the gate for approaching visitors 45 46.
