Background / History
Taking in Yang Ge
Shopkeeper Liu brought the destitute Yang Ge back to the Welcome Inn during winter, giving him shelter and employment when he was at risk of freezing or starving on the streets. He also helped secure Yang Ge's household registration. Yang Ge believed this must have required considerable silver and personal favors, and regarded Liu as one of the people who had saved his life 1 3.
Liu quickly came to value Yang Ge's literacy, diligence, practical judgment, and lack of reckless ambition. He assured him that the Liu household would continue feeding him even without registration, and offered to smooth matters over with silver if the authorities detained him 1.
The martial manual crisis
When Jiang Kui gave Yang Ge the Wild Wind Leg manual, Liu initially urged him to burn it rather than invite danger. He reconsidered after Yang Ge explained that anyone seeking the manual might refuse to believe it had been destroyed. Having run the inn for thirty-five years, Liu reluctantly accepted a temporary closure during the Grace Martial Examination 2 3.
After an intruder attacked the inn, Liu rushed to the bloodied Yang Ge and offered to fetch a doctor. He then followed Yang Ge's lead in loudly claiming that the manual had been stolen, helping divert attention away from its actual holder. He reported the attack to the night patrol and refused Yang Ge's offer to reimburse the damage and payments made to the officers 4 5.
To give Yang Ge somewhere else to stay, Liu arranged a vacant courtyard house on Firewood Gate Street, with two months free in exchange for repairs. He later promised that the Liu family would not take the house back. When the authorities brought the captured attacker for identification, Liu admitted that concern for Yang Ge had kept him awake for two nights 5 9 11.
Succession and the martial arts school
Liu decided to call his son home to inherit the inn and proposed promoting Yang Ge from attendant to shopkeeper. The offer concerned management, not ownership. He also urged the homesick Yang Ge to stop looking backward and begin living for his future 10.
Although wary of martial-world involvement, Liu eventually accepted Liu Mang's plan to operate a martial arts school alongside the inn. He reasoned that worsening conditions made trouble difficult to avoid and that martial protection might help the household. He asked Yang Ge to guide his reckless son, but explicitly placed their friendship above securing his assistance 23.
Liu enthusiastically supported Yang Ge's condition that Liu Mang marry and have children. By Mid-Autumn Festival, his son was betrothed to Butcher Deng's second daughter. Liu invited Yang Ge to accompany the family when presenting the betrothal gifts, but Yang Ge declined to prevent his dangerous connections from implicating them 23 28 29.
Reopening and continued work
Liu welcomed neighboring shopkeepers when the Welcome Inn reopened. Despite repeatedly declaring his intention to retire, he continued arriving for work every day. Yang Ge received a manager's wages but largely retained his waiter duties because Liu could not relinquish the business 36 43.
Yang Ge's copper-pot mutton brought a period of brisk trade. Jiang Kui's return nevertheless alarmed Liu, who remembered the earlier closure and remained suspicious even after learning that the former bandit now held a government position 44 45.
Grain-price crisis
As grain prices rose, paying customers disappeared and the inn became a destination for beggars and neighbors seeking loans. Liu continued opening early to prepare millet porridge and could not bring himself to refuse requests for grain. The inn's recently purchased supplies and the grain Yang Ge contributed were soon exhausted 46 49.
When Wang Dezhu sought help, Liu took him home and lent him three dou from his household stores—enough for six people only until the year's end. His generosity left Yang Ge worried that further price increases could threaten the Liu family itself 49.
Appearance
- Build: Short and thin, contrasting sharply with his tall, sturdy son 22.
- Face: An aged, narrow face with visible wrinkles 1 28.
- Distinguishing feature: A beard that he tugs when worried 3.
- Festive clothing: Wears new celebratory clothes for his son's betrothal procession and reuses them for the inn's reopening 29 36.
Personality
Liu is generous in practical ways: he provides shelter, employment, registration assistance, affordable housing, and food rather than merely offering sympathy. His concern for Yang Ge becomes openly paternal; he compares the young man's prolonged distress to the suffering of his own children and treats him as family 1 5 10 28.
He favors modest security over fame or advancement. Decades of dealing with guests have convinced him that people whose ambitions exceed their means often meet ugly ends. His fear of the Embroidered Uniform Guard and distrust of officials reflect this caution, but he can revise his position when Yang Ge presents a convincing argument 3 9 23 45.
His affection coexists with a sharp temper and biting sarcasm. He frequently scolds or strikes Wang Dali for laziness and foolishness, and speaks harshly about his son's irresponsibility. During the grain crisis, compassion overrides even his usual trust in Yang Ge: he angrily insists on helping Wang Dezhu before learning that the inn has nothing left to lend 1 3 23 49.
